The largest SUP warehouse "in the world" just opened in SJC, Ca.

The new SUP ATX just opened it's doors right down the street from Hobie's headquarters in San Juan Capistrano, Ca. I wandered in there yesterday and "Man they got a lot of big ass cruiser boards"! There must be 60 boards in a row, that are 11' to 12' x 32"+ x 5" all arounders' even have a few wider than 36". A whole line of fishing SUP's, and Lahui Kai race boards. Maybe 30 to 40 Lahui Kai's in stock. There was one SUP surfing 10' x 29" x 4" fish in stock. All the boards have crazy volume and width. I think my 72 year old mother-in-law could paddle one while using her walker. I guess we'll be seeing a lot of SUP ATX boards in the harbor soon.

"Boards for the masses" does have an ominous overtone.
We all love this sport and want to share the stoke... but mainstreaming has a malignant side.

Lots of inexpensive, entry level, super stable boards will be accompanied by aggressive marketing to a wider demographic... fine for a waterway... tough on a lineup

All of a sudden my cold, solo winter sessions in New England are giving me a warm secure feeling

And by the way... cheap entry level boards create a flood of new business for established brands as they upgrade to their 2nd board.

My gut tells me ATX has lost a lot of the initial steam they had.  Sure price point boards have a market, but will it be enough to support renting a big ass HQ/warehouse?  Time will tell.

Being a real estate and private equity guy myself I just don't see that as a viable business at that scale in that rent zone.  But that being said, I wish them the best and hope they prove me wrong as entrepreneurs, like these guys, are the people that make this Country great, or at least used to before we all got "regulated"

Let me lay it down for ya. It's hard for me to drag my butt out of bed and into cold water and I love this stuff. A "casual" participant will never be a problem other than on the nicest sunniest day.

The NE boys have it right. When it's not perfect, they won't be out. We all take it for granted but our water is cold. The harbor might fill up, but the lineup is mostly safe if you ask me.

what piss off the most was couple month back, some sup company had a demo day at where i surf.  Of course they were all paddling/get stuck around  the break zone and the added bonus of no leash.  I did try to avoid them but i end up surfing close to them and one of the lady loss her board in the white water as i was passing her.  Her fin cut right into my rail and her instructor took off his leash and hand his board to her and he went after the loose board.  of course she have no idea what the leash are for and never put it on. Im just piss they dont require them to wear a leash.

I absolutely love how empty I can find the surf here. Especially my local spot which only breaks on blue moons and the end of the Mayan calendar.  When it does though it's crazy magic. I'm always alone there. I'd actually like some company sometimes just so someone else can say holy shit!

I would not worry. These guys are right  unless they start  selling upscale boards at discount prices  which I doubt  it won't make much of a difference.  and  in the harbour or open ocean  you won't even notice.

Does anyone make boards here anymore?  I doubt any of the big companies make large numbers of entry level boards in the US.  A few custom shapes of course, but enough to fill a warehouse?
