If you have a Google account you can create all kinds of fun content in Google maps.

Go to Google maps....click "my places", click "create a map". The map window will now have some icons at the top that let you draw lines, shapes, points. Hint...to finish a line click the last point twice, and you can edit the lines after placement...hover over it and a handle will appear at each change of direction and at the midpoint between them...drag and release to edit. When you finish placing something a dialog box will pop up to give it a name and description. You can edit the dialog later by double clicking the item. You can edit the color, weight, and opacity of the lines and such, include links to photos, videos, websites, etc.. A pretty cool tool. You can even ask others to collaborate on a map by having it send them an email.

I've created a bunch of maps for the CCBC events and my training runs. And there are few folks that have collaborate on the world downwind map I started.

Examples:
World Downwind map http://g.co/maps/2zn6z
I'm still hoping to someday do Provincetown to Plymouth in a Nor'easter (somewhat funny vid link in that one from the early days.)

CCBC 2012 http://g.co/maps/2zaur

Challenge on the Charles http://g.co/maps/ang7m

You can also save it as a kml file for viewing in Google Earth where you can do even more cool stuff. Google earth can do all of the above and more. Google has so many very cool tools. I use Google Sketchup and Earth professionally all the time...of course they now know every detail of my life... ;D

Thanks Bob, I will give that a try. Techie stuff must run in your family 8)

I finally used an Iphone app to record my flatwater paddle Saturday. Kinda fun to see the route after you are done. I had a lot of headwind and VERY low incoming tide on the outbound leg. It forced me to take some pretty strange detours that made the red squiggly line do some cool zig zags. It was 6 miles as the crow flies... much longer my way... ;D
