new shapes?
« on: January 29, 2012, 05:20:38 PM »
Are there any ? or are  we in a series of subparallel universes with  everything coming out at about the same time.  look at the space pickle  post. Look at wardogs post on his 6 channel. now check out his that i  found in  a local newspaper   in north county San Diego  the coast..  so are there any new shapes or just rehashes of old ideas. all this stuff is really cool

Aloha OUTSIDEWAVE,
Small world...the guy who wrote the article, Chris Ahrens, lived down the street from us for a short spell in Humboldt late 70's/early 80's...I showed him some of the ins/outs of the North Coast...looks like he has done OK as a surf journalist...reminds me...he has a couple of my slides that I'd like to get back...gonna Facebook him...;-)

Those channels look kewl...runs them off the tail...we also did asymmetricals in our wavesailing boards...on the West Coast they were set up for wave riding rights...called them "can openers"...

The thing is with design as time goes on, I like to go back and revisit valid retro design concepts of the past and consider whether modern fin design and options...lightweight materials...etc...can make them current and revalidated...
I have had extensive surfing and windsurfing board experiences that I draw on...plus, having George Greenough around always had me thinking...;-)

Thanks for sharing...
Mahalos...{:~)

Outside, Funny you should start this thread just as I came across a couple of photos of a SUP surfing board I haven't seen before. Looks like it's working for this guy. It's like a swallow nose, with a round tail?
It's not overhead to me!
8'8" L-41 ST and a whole pile of boards I rarely use.

I'm pretty sure Action Water Sports in Marina Del Rey has one of these on the floor, or maybe a surfboard version of the same design.  Next time I'm by there I'll take a look and some photos.

Ha! I was wondering when I'd see a Gemini SUP.

From what I can surmise, the pickle fork design use on watercraft originated from hydroplane boat racing...back to at least 1949...

My inflatable tunnel hull cat incorporates this design to broaden the hull...

We've also seen this design used in wakeboarding, windsurfing, kiteboarding, snowboarding, obviously surfing...and, now...;-)

Exiled nailed it.  Here's the prone of the same.  I wouldn't want to be a body boarder and get my head wedged in the nose slot!

Actually, the Gemini would work REALLY well as an SUP shape... I have two prone Geminis... a step up for a specific reef break (that has snapped and been repaired twice) ... and an all around.

Paddle out on one of these bad boys (shaped as an SUP) at Creek... with a chest mounted Go Pro... and maybe some vibram five fingers... and you will truly understand how brutal humans can be to one another... (other than the whole genocide thing... that's just a different level).

I used to catch infinite grief when I rode mine... I still break it out once in awhile (bright green) just to have fun...

Ok Tim, you are the 'quiver master'. I could see getting the semi-kook look with one of those boards for sure.

Talldude,

Classic... either that, or I just keep some wierd sh*t... (like my 6'0 assymetrical quad)... it is just one of those boards that I can't bear to part with... I have been doing much quiver reducing... and those things make the cut every time... I will probably bag them up and hide them on the roof next time the wife starts agitating about too many boards.  When our roof was redone last year, I had the roofer install three industrial eyelets for just this purpose...

"What is that noise on the roof honey?"

"Ummm... the neighbor's cat for sure..."
