wipeout video
« on: January 26, 2012, 07:41:37 PM »
Drove into Kahului with no visions of riding waves... just another flat water training run from the harbor and camera mount experimenting.  Pulled off the road as the sun rose from the Haiku ridge of Haleakala and snapped this.  Is the smog this bad in SoCal?  I've read that the stuff is worse because of the heavy metals.  Everyone here seems a tad sick right now.

Pono was resting his shoulder so I soloed out of the harbor and turned on the camera so you can see what the outside of the harbor looks like with that floating condo (cruise ship) in dock.  All my previous plans went out the window.  There were head high waves and even tho the place is fairly well known here in 2012, no one was out.  At that size it's mushy but perfect for my 14 to cruise on.  So I put in a few take offs on the vid and the one wipeout wave with a little size in order to keep it short.

Normally I wouldn't attempt a bigger wave with a 14 but I thought it would back off.  It jacked up down the line and I needed to swing it around quickly... which I failed to do, took gas  becoming one with the wave.  That was the end of the video  but I thought the shots were pretty hilarious.

I inserted one shot from the shaft mount which worked holding the blade out while riding a wave but when I was paddling, it looked like a pole stuck in the ground with me yanking my body around it.  Didn't expect that.  very weird.  Tried to keep it short, about 1.5 min., no music, native sound.

Surf Cowboy...It is the Panny.  I was afraid to lose my new Canon with this shaft mount idea.  THought it might just fling off into oblivion.  Turns out the shaft idea wasn't good anyway except to hold out over and to the side of your head.  But I'll use the shaft mount with the Canon (with wtrhousing)  as a steady came to shoot some outer reef stuff.  Surf is supposed to get fair size in the next couple.

nice video.  You can actually see the size of the waves.  The wide angle of the gopro camera always makes the waves look much smaller than they are.

Yes that's my gripe about extreme wide angle.  I was wide open at 28mm which is where focal length usually begins to be referred to as wide.  But on my Canon I go to 24mm and that's also not too bad with distortion.  But wide is like a shotgun you have when you can't aim (which I needed to do with the head mount and board mounts.... ala GoPro just not as radical wide)

With a shoulder mount I've built, I can aim thru a viewfinder and shoot thru the LCD and go for 35 or even 50mm.  After that shake starts to rear its head.  But 35mm will look very real.

Problem is I need a jet ski for that.  So if anyone wants to drive me around??? (for free. I'm not making any $ on this)  I'm ready.

great photos and video

I was drooling watching those waves approach, good camera angle

must have been a fun day...

I see the cruise ship in background and you mention this is a harbor, does this wave break regularly?
