Smallest Collapsible Paddle?
« on: January 22, 2012, 08:00:36 PM »
I'm thinking of doing some touring/sailing with my Bic Jungle Wind SUP around the coast here. So I was thinking that I could bring a paddle that fits into a backpack with me and de-rig the sail to a SUP in case the wind died or something happened that I would have a quicker way to get back to the beach and/or up/down the coast.

Can anyone recommend a paddle that would collapse into a backpack? Or what the smallest possible paddle is? I guess I could derig and use one of the mast half's as the paddle shaft and just bring the blade. Any thoughts?

thanks

NSI makes an add a paddle that you might be able to some how attach to your mast, but it looks kind of goofy and uses the handle of a regular paddle to work. The Boardworks 3 piece is  the best bang for the buck.

Werner has a few paddles that break down to 3 pieces.  Very easy to tuck under a deck bungy or stuff in a deck bag.  Good idea to have a backup or upwind solution.  Here's a pic of the Werner paddle next to my one piece Nitro and a break down kayak paddle.

Corran Addison at Imagine is always inventing cool stuff, check out his Rapier break down paddle, http://www.imaginesurf.com/?post_type=imaginesurf_product&p=839

The new Naish 3 pce adjustable is one of the smallest that I've seen.

Here is a 4 peice paddle that has it all...it is made by Accent Paddles and like some of the other brands they have generations in paddle design and construction as well.  This one is the Accent Ride Stand Up Paddle and this configuation is a adjustable 4 piece.  This one adjusts from 78 to 84  From what I can tell it is...
-smallest collapsable
-adjustable for up to 6 inches.
-foam core blade
-heavy duty dynel edge...I have smashed this paddle on rocks in whitewater and it can take it.)
-carbon shaft with a textured surface for better grip.
-ergonomic palm grip.
-$279 retail that is almost 100 less than some of the other prices I have seen.

The longest shaft piece can removed and the paddle is then a 3 piece adjustable outrigger canoe...how cool is that.

I have used this paddle in the regular adjustable form and it is a great paddle...it has alot of positive blade bouncy, a well built shaft, and the 6 inches of adjustability is works well be me because I do alot of different styles of stand up...from whitewater(good to be much shorter at 78in for me) to cruising (84 in for my 6 foot frame)

Great travel paddle.
