Which board ???
« on: December 31, 2011, 05:41:38 PM »
OK i'm new to stand up and just about to purchase my first board, very excited!! 90% use flat water on Lake Wanaka New Zealand and other surrounding lakes, however would like to have the occasional surf trip riding small waves.

A friend of mine is a distibutor for Coreban and can sell me a board at cost so heavily discounted  ;D this rules out any other brand, so i'm not looking for suggestions of other brand names just whether or not to get the Coreban cuiser 11,6 pure or the Coreban EZ 10 pure, both feel like quality products and are fantastic to paddle, both boards glide nicely maybe the cruiser faster than the EZ howether the EZ feels that little bit more agile when practicing basic pivot turns etc.

Your advice would be welcomed as even with a large discount the boards are still quite exspensive...

I paddled today (the first day of 2012 and wwe had clear blue skys and glassy water) and my friend had the new Coreban10' Ez.. It's alot like my 10' Mana that I paddle often and even on flat water with no waves in sight.. I say go for the Ez over the 11'6" Cruiser.. If you want to paddle the Ez for longer distances on flat water just fit a slightly larger center fin and you will get less yawing.. Another good Coreban option is the 12'6" Alpha Race... IMO that would also be a great choice for you... btw how heavy are you?

If you're going to to any surfing with it, I say the EZ.

Cheers for your replys  :) reckon it's going to be the EZ now just torn between the core and the pure, the pure does look sexy with the added bonus of being that little lighter but also that little bit more exspensive :(

David I had a look at the 12,6 Alpha race reckon it's that little bit to specific to flat water and ocean swells rather than flat/surf, top advice on the larger fin on the EZ cheers, btw i'm 78 - 80kg

I would take a good look at the alpha 12'6

If you are going to be on flat water 90% of the time this would be a great option.

I have surfed the alpha 12 in small mushy surf and had fun. It's not going to be as comfortable in the surf as the ez or cruiser but it is a much better flat water board. I think if you used a surf fin in the alpha it could be a fun mini wave surfer.

I agree.. The 12'6" surfs well.. Here's my friend fireman Dave on his.. amd another friend Mike taking Dave's board for a spin... It will not surf as well as the Ez but you need to look at what you will be doing the most.. The 12'6" is a much better flat water board.. and can even be taken on a down-winder.

I'm on board with Aves and DJ, the 12'6 race in Pure or Carbon construction is imo the way to go. Flats or open water swell , I don't think you'll be disappointed either way.

If you plan to do any down-winders during your flat water paddling the 12'6" does surprisingly well.. You can see it at the start of this vid.. The Ez would not work as a DW board.. But the Ez would surf better.

My initial thoughts were to ignore the Alpha 12'6 as my limited knowledge had it down as a specialist race board, how wrong I appear to be. Only problem is not having the opportunity to demo one however after reading numerous reviews and your replies looks like I may just take the plunge at get the Alpha 12’6 pure.

The Coreban Alpha 12'6 is a nice board but don't forget they make a 14Ft. I know a bunch of folks who got 12'6 (at your size) and in less than a year bought 14ft

Just trying to save you some $$$ in the long run

Have fun
