Rob,

What kind of paddling are you looking to do? Flat water? Surf? Are you actively engaged in any other board sports?

Looking at your dimensions and I've got to say that I think the board you are looking at is too big. I'm 6'1", 220# primarily interested in surf and would consider the board you are looking at. Disclaimer: I'm just about as much a newb as you are but the advice is work just what you paid for it 8)

Something to think about is how far down do you sink the board when you are in flat water(how much volume do you need). Another thing to think about is how nimble will the board be, can you turn it around reasonably quickly(how small a board would you need). With these two opposing questions I'd be inclined to demo a few smaller boards.

I'm sure that's a cool board for flat water, and would probably hold you for your intro to surf, but it really isnt going to take you far in either racing or true surfing. But those boards seem to be a good deal. I think most guys will tell you that if want to race it at all, you'll want a more streamlined outline.

A 10'6" for flat water is fairly short - for a newb - in small surf - it is about right.

The longer the board the straighter it will track - on flat water.

You must decide what type of paddling you want the board to work best for.
