Noob Needing Board Advise
« on: May 14, 2011, 03:03:45 AM »
Aloha all. I'm new to this sport and I'm trying to find the perfect board for me. I have been testing a few boards reading this as well as other forums and talking with some local shops here on Oahu getting advise on what to look for. I'm about 5'10" and 244lbs. I'm gonna do about 90% flat water, 10% small waves in the beginning, hopefully increase in the wave area as I get better at it. I've been comfortable on the C4 Soft Top Pohaku 11' and 12' and the Amundson TR 12'6". My main issue is since I live in apartment, I'm limited to a board about 10'4"ish. So basically because of my weight and storage limitations, I'm looking for a short, wide, and high volume board. PSH has the 10'2" Hull Paddler that is 33" wide and was told it's a good fit for me, I noticed they also have a 10'4" AA X-wide 32.25" wide that looks like it would fit me good too. C4 ATB 10'6" 29.5" wide might work, but it seems a little narrow, but I'm not afraid to work at it either. Any suggestions on these listed or any others available that might suit me. Mahalo in advance. BTW, I love this sport!

Joe Blair 10-1 would be a good fit - super stable and surfs great for it's size. You're best buying used first though - 99% chance that within a year you'll want a new board.

Joe Blair is a good option. Another would be the starboard wide point 10'5". Just over your size limit but it'll float you well and will be great in surf if you ever head that direction. If you can only have one board, it's a good all-around one.

Much mahalo for the input. I just sent an email to Joe to see if he has any dealers here in Honolulu. Looks like he makes some great boards for us heavier dudes. I'll definitely keep an eye out for the Starboard wide point too. I've been watching Craigslist for SUPs and most for my size on there're 11' plus. There's also a few businesses on there too, which of course aren't used boards. I'll keep looking and testing. Mahalo.

I am slightly lighter and have the Angulo Supa 10-4. 31 1/2" wide and 170 liters of volume. Very stable pleanty of float and surf's great. Well worth seeing if Ed Angulo on Maui has someone in Oahu with a board for you to try. But I think it's important to try any board before buying. Be aware that going short sounds trick but a small change in length can make a big difference in stability and how easy it is to paddle any distance. Important when the break you are try to get to is a mile away in choppy water.

Well, decided to pick up the PSH Hull Paddler 10'2" x 33" today, should be ready in about half an hour! Hopefully get a chance to use it a little today, if not definitely tomorrow!
