Major Delamination
« on: April 25, 2011, 08:48:39 AM »
Glassed my first board shaped from 1.5 eps --- 2 x 6.5 layers glass rail wrapped -- used Resin Research Resin -- I am an experienced glass head boat builder ---soooooo
-- all  is fine till I put it on top of my car with a darker eva deck pad -- major delamination 12'' x 24'' on deck --so my plan was to drill a hole in the deck pour in some epoxy --rotate board so it moves around and weight down the deck and all is well ---
BUT ___ I Shine a Flashlight in the hole --looking at the foam core and it looked like it was honey combed -- almost like it melted -- the resin manufacturer told me the board got so hot on the top of my car the foam melted ???? Really ???
Any insight in this ---thanks ahead of time

Did you use Gore-tex vents?

Was the blank painted?

I had a famous shaper tell me no paint is safer and 2 vents is best.

That sux big time.  It also doesn't sound right.

In the future, can you strap your board upside down, fin up?

Yes, it can get hot enough to melt the foam.  Board bags and shade are a must, and yes, vent plugs.  I like to put mine offset over the stringer because the air flow is most likely best there.

Really appreciate the input
Yes, I will keep the board pad down & use a lighter color-- my stupid mstake--;]
I did not paint the blank -- but did use some spackle -- will use epoxy to seal the next one -
It had a gore vent in it from day one -- I think the cubic air exhale was too much for the vent -- it is a thick board I use for lessons --so 2 would have been the smart choice ---
I just filled the void with the dreaded home depot foam and will use it till the fin drops off !!!
I have used horozontal stringers with pretty good success -- saves messing with a wood one-- not big surf though !!!
Thanks to all for the input ---
