Paddle adventure with dolphins
« on: January 31, 2011, 11:20:50 PM »
I went paddling yesterday launching from the Makapuu pier with my friend Nicole in a OC1 on a surprisingly calm day.  We came across a pod of spinner dolphins and I got it on video with my gopro cam with headstrap.  Some of the dolphins were cruising right by the nose of the board, pretty cool.

We paddled on to Sandy Beach but the light kona headwinds got stronger and we decided to head back to where we started instead of paddling to Hawaii Kai as planned.  We came across more spinner dolphins or maybe the same group coming back.

Dolphins always seem to have a good time, some are always leaping out of the water like there is a wild party going on.  They are intelligent, social and fun loving, live in harmony with nature, glide through the water effortlessly and don't use fossil fuels.  We have a lot to learn from them.

We saw some whales breaching and slapping their tails but they were too far away to get on video.  We continued around Rabbit Island, I had never been around that side and the whole thing was a cool adventure.

This is why I got into distance paddling and sometimes if you just do downwinders, training and racing you miss out on some of this cool stuff.

I'm not sure why the embedding did not work.
I guess I can just put the links, that seems to work.

Try again:

It worked fine for me.

I love being out there with the critters.  But, we also have gators.  And the occasional sleeping manatee that freak out for some reason when you paddle over top of them.

I do alot of fishing on mine and it's great to sight fish when the fish cruise right by you.

I need a gopro!  Honey......
If you are not living on the edge; you are taking up too much room!

Know this is an old thread but I got a question to either the OP or anyone else. In the last video "backside...", the white board ( one w/o go pro), what is that? Is it a outrigger? SUP outrigger? And yeah, this is a legit question, sorry if I'm just that ignorant, but I'm really curious as to what kind of board/vessel it is.

Thnx for getting back so quick. Ima have to look into the OC1, it looks like it's thin and fun. Sorry for the question, I've just never seen anything that had an outrigger look like that before. Anywho, nice vids and thnx again.
