Glove Recommendations for Cold Weather
« on: January 12, 2011, 04:29:47 PM »
Doing Cold Stroke. Need gloves. Recs? Anything you can pick up at a sport or diving store recommended. Anyone use wide receiver gloves?

Input please.

Try looking at winter sailing gloves.

Grippy palms and fingers. Your choice of full fingers or "nose pickers" (no finger tips)

Look for names like Gill, Harken, Slam, Zhik.

I live in New England, paddle all winter long, 3-4 days a week. I use 5mm gloves (have rip curls and excels). My fingertips always start out with burning pain for about 5-8 minutes of the beginning paddle, after that I rarely have any issues as my body heats up from the work of paddleing.

Temps are almost always cold secondary to windy conditions and low winds chills up here, my feet are a bigger problem than my hands.

Paddled this past saturday 28 degree air, 20-25 mph winds, 37 degree water.....cold as balls. My buddy paddled the short 3.75 mile course we did with NO GLOVES, he just generates far more heat output than I do.

Neil Pryde windsurfing mittens - open palm gives regular grip on handle and keeps forearms from fatiguing, and mitten keeps fingers warm.

NRS makes a few excellent gloves that are pre-curved for paddle-specific sports.

They also have mit, which is a warm choice, too

I don't know how thick you need the gloves to be.

When it's really cold and windy here in Peniche, I SUP with my Xcel Infinity 5 fingers:1,5mm gloves.

They're perfect.
Really lightweighted and thin, they prevent my hands from freezing with the windchill while they still allow me to keep the sensibility in my hands. They're very grippy are liquid sealed.

They're 10 out of 10. At least for my needs!!!

not really a glove recommendation, but hopefully useful.

I found that my hand slips on the paddle shaft wearing gloves (which I do most days in the winter).  I use board wax on the shaft in the "grip zone."  Works great, comes off easily, and is the only thing I use wax for any more.

I carry some neoprene gloves in the shop, but what I really miss are my xcel lobster mitts.  I had them for surfing, and figured they wouldn't work for paddling, but i was WRONG>  They are plenty flexible and keep your fingers much warmer than gloves (which always give fingertip freeze).  I took em off one day this fall when it was just too warm for them, left them on a rock thinking no way will they tide get that high before I'm done...but the waves were epic and clean, the sun was shining, and the lobster mitts were never to be seen again!
