It sure doesnt look that different from the original SB New from so many years ago.  I tried Argosi's 23" 12-6, and my only thought wasthat i was standing in some sort of foot bath... The water was up to my ankles.. Though Having you feet below the waterline sure helped balancing it.

One observation from an engineering design pov..  Why the f&$k does SB continue to NOT radius the top rail corners..  Dumb.  Sharp corners are not user friendly as everyone has pointed out, and are structurally weaker.   My 2 sense worth.

what does the foot sole do?
Maybe he means "footbed".

Downwind and Racing / Re: Which fin on your DW board?
« on: August 28, 2016, 05:22:34 PM »
The LA/JR Aercor is my downwind fin of choice on my old Naish Glide V2. Compliments it perfectly, fixing the annoying hammock rock when it gets caught by a quartering wave that normally causes the Glide to broach.. .

That being said, I'm with DJ in that dolphin style fins are probably the best downwind fins for most boards.

Yes, the Maliko vs. Glide Mk2 (v2 lol).  I tend to agree A10, rocker is a friend when it comes to turnkey downwinding.  Every time I try a new board (potential replacement for my Glide) I am underwhelmed. Sure, they're all pretty and new, (not all of them, some are fugly) but it just goes to show that Harold Iggy was so far ahead of the game..  8)

It's for the large chunk (large, get it?) of us who don't give a rat's ass about racing. We're into fun.  The FX shapes owe a lot to the V2 and V3 custom bullets as well as the flat water X series.  The idea of a rudder that can be swapped out for a fixed fin is just what the doctor ordered.. if you're really stuck on the idea of a race, easy Peasy.  But really, it's a board for touring in all waters.  Who wants to spend all their energy balancing on a skinny anorexic race board?  Some, sure, but for every 1 person obsessed with competing there's probably ten who really just don't care. That's the market.

Thanks DJ.  Finally a new Naish that interests me.  Now I have to decide between at least three boards (and brands ) for a new all round do everything 14... Which is waaay better than having none to choose from.   8)

I just want to say, as an inland-only, lake-only guy, I feel zero connection to surfing and I'm surprised it matters to anyone. I'm the guy who otherwise kayaks - usually in my plastic "toy" kayak, but sometimes in my old Pacific Designs Sea-Otter (40 year old fiberglass :D ) . It's 100% lakes and streams. Waves are made by boats going by.

..so is there ever windy days on the lake you paddle?  Betcha there is.  Try paddling with the wind one day.  The stronger the wind the better. 15 knots sustained is a good start.  It only gets better.  Arrange for someone to pick you up at the other end.  Then get back to us.. You'll need to talk about it...

Gear Talk / Re: Starboard Pocket Touring Board?
« on: July 21, 2016, 07:20:33 PM »
Did try a SB Pocket Touring on a demo day and found it had a lot of drag at the tail for some reason.  Did try to stand as far forward as possible as well.  Not sure why it was like that.  On the longer lengths of the Elite Touring the glide was cleaner and better - but still a bit draggy.  It seems that the change to a square tail added a lot more stability at the expense of efficient glide - plus the nose is wider as well.  Better for stable touring - but not as efficient as before.

Lack of tail rocker, maybe?

Stokitude..

Haha.. That says it all. What a great day that looked DJ, and your vid showing the car ride there is where the stokitude all begins. Knowing that conditions are going to be epic on the  journey to the launch point is something hard to explain to those who have not done this, or not windsurfed, surfed or driven to a ski resort in the early morning to get first tracks after 24" / 30cms of fresh snow. There is something about the joint anticipation of epicness, of effortless long glorious glides and artful links to another and another and another and being together that is so special. This is where life comes alive.

Yuuuup.  Truth.  8)

Great reporting on the Yukon River Quest on SUP Racer.  This is the first time Stand Up Paddlers are allowed to compete in this epic 444 mile race down the Yukon River in Canada.  The paddlers have been racing for 3 days with  two mandatory stops: the first at roughly half way is 7 hours, the second mandatory stop is 3 hours.  You can follow the paddlers on a live GPS map, Bart de Zwart is in the lead but second and third are not too far behind battling for second place.  After doing the California 100 mile race down the Sacramento River a few weeks ago I caught the super long distance adventure racing bug and this one is on my bucket list, for sure:

Robert, Your Sup-maran (Cata-SUP?) would be a great equalizer with that crazy Bart..
