Gear Talk / New 8'4
« on: November 15, 2007, 09:40:39 AM »

I posted other shots in the gear section of the photo gallery page.

This board is a curvelinear 8'6 (8'4 1/2 straight line tip to tail).  It is 27.5 wide, 19 at 1 foot from the nose, 16 at 1 foot from the tail, 4.4 thick.

...some production boards that will allow a deep driving bottom turn?

It seems like everyone is holding back on making production models that are sized, thinned and rockered for ripping.  For sure there is a place for cruisers, longboards, full railed, soft wave models etc., but of the 50+ production boards out there, you would think that at least one would fully cut it loose.

Anyone....

Sessions / A fun stretch on Maui
« on: November 06, 2007, 06:58:50 AM »
Man, am I beat!!!

Friday had minors waves, but ZERO wind.  Clean and fun on our south shore (Small and beat up North).  Friday was really nice South shore conditions.  Pouring rain (man, I love to surf in the rain) Double session for us.  Head high sets.  Great shape.  Yesterday was bigger, more challenging, but the double ups were WAY FUN with some random open screamers.  Looked horrible from shore, but 20+ fun waves an noone out down the way.

More on tap and the North shore supposed to deliver later in the week.   (oh, and we picked up my....ooopps, no Chan's new 8'6 that Blane shaped from Aloha yesterday and I....no she is dying to try it).

Hi all,

The guys from Mad TV and RSN (Resort Sports Network) were kind enough to contact us recently about a segment they are going to be producing on our sport.  They are going to be filming on Maui, and conditions permitting, Sunday the 21st looks like the day.  Right now Pat Caldwell is calling for 6-8 foot faces and variable winds, so it sounds like this should be great filming conditions.

We would love to have a good turnout for interviews, action, and community footage.  We will choose a spot tomorrow afternoon and will update anyone who has interest in participating.  Please email admin@standupzone.com if you are interested.  This is all about the aloha; no pro status required.

Best,

Randy and Chantalle

Didn't get out of the house until 11:00, and didn't think there was any swell yet.  Wrong.   Hookipa was head high when we drove past, but already really windy.  Checked Paia Bay, and it was empty.  Empty because it looked windy junky, but the upwind area looked sheltered enough by the homes and trees to be doable, with occassional shoulder high.  Chan said let's go, and that was all it took.  We launched in front of the showers and it took 5 minutes to paddle the 200 yards upwind across the bay to the calmer water - barely moving against the 20 +/- mph wind.  We were laughing the whole way.  Gusts would completely stop us, lulls would let us slowly advance.  Lean into a gust, and when it let up struggle to adjust back without falling on our faces.

In the wind shadow, we could hold position, but it was only breaking just downwind of there, so we developed a method.  Hang in the calm and wait for a distant set to show, then slowly paddle out of the shadow, exposing ourselves to the wind. trying to time it so that the bluster would pick us up and carry us towards the swell line, and towards shore (it was blowing in that direction).  We could make little position adjustments by paddling, but for the most part the wind was setting us up for rides (or not).  On my best one I took a few baby stokes to nudge me into the wind, the wind set me up perfectly and only a single stroke entry-Sweet!  On the worst ones...nah, lets leave it a the best ones.

Killer time for us, but the few tourists on the beach must have been thinking, "what are these two rubes doing".

Some thoughts by shaper Joe Blair:

As you know, I agree with a bunch of his comments.  We differ a bit on sizing, but hey, that is what opinions are for!

Events / HASA
« on: October 10, 2007, 03:45:54 PM »
HASA is having an event this weekend on Oahu that is now including a stand up division.  Way To Go!

A friend recently asked the directors at HASA Maui about including a standup division, and was told, We aren't going to be doing that here.

I wonder how that decision came about.

SUP General / Gettin' In
« on: October 09, 2007, 05:33:53 AM »
A few years back, the stand up guys were all sitting (standing) furthest out, taking plenty strokes, and in general, powering in from the outside.  What about now?  Boards are different and more refined, skills have come up, waves are the same.  This is a very situational question, of  course, and will be effected by wave, board size etc, but that aside, where do you find yourself in the lineup (or if alone, compared to where you were when prone surfing)?  Why?  Are you there because it feels comfortable, because you need to be due to a board limitation, or because of a crowd dynamic?

A related question; do you think it takes more or less effort/distance/time to get in on a stand up over your prone longboard?  How about your shortboard?

Gear Talk / Standem
« on: October 08, 2007, 08:55:55 AM »
Randy Royse sent over a pic of Jeremy and Jill doubling up on this Laird board.  These two have been playing with the standem thing since early summer and can ride waves well on this board, and can even get Jill out on the nose now.  Sorry, no wave shots yet, but I am pushing Randy for it.   Very cool!

SUP General / Your perfect day-Poll
« on: September 29, 2007, 10:08:12 AM »
In a further attempt to have some fun, and to let shapers and the industry know what we are doing (or want to do) with our Stand Up boards in the surf, what size waves do you prefer?  This is your desired day, the one you wait for the forecasters to call, so have at it.  Additionally, this is not to say that you will not go out if its bigger, or won't have a ball if its smaller, just that this is your ideal (right now).

Notes:  The scale is Hawaiian, so 1-2 means roughly 2-4 foot faces.  Each user can vote once and results are anonymous.  You must be logged in to vote.

I am a dunce, and initially missed the (oh so fun) 4-5 foot option.  It is now added as the final choice.

Thanks for participating!
