Gear Talk / Re: Logic check: Gooru vest just in case.
« on: November 29, 2016, 03:35:07 PM »
I'm not sure what the hand wringing is all about at this point.

75 Newtons, 4 Gallons of Milk, 11 lbs of thrust. . . .

If you troll Amazon you will see the price of this vest change over time often based on color.  Last year I got one for $35 even though I didn't need a second one (and mine is almost 7 years old).  I gave it to a 'kid' for Christmas that I had been surfing with who was interested in big waves.

Here it is for $95 shipped (in the US).  The extra warmth allows for thinner, cheaper wetsuits so you will save the money over time and did I mention it doesn't wear out if worn under your wetsuit.

You will never have an appreciation for the amount of float until you try it but 11 lbs is enough beyond neutral to get you back to the surface in anything from 2 to 12 foot faces.

I remember when I cracked my ribs, through my Gooru, and was in so much pain I couldn't crawl back on my board.  I was bobbing and giggled at the thought 'Wow this sucks but at least I'm not going to drown.'  Eventually the wind and waves deposited me back on the beach.

Ohhhhh and I found my long lost brother. . . .

I don't windsurf often but when I do I too only drive electric.

If nothing else these guys are motivating us to lose weight and throw caution to the wind.

Speaking of AU flakes, or AL, We haven't heard from BigDong in a while  :'(

I am quite flattered by all the attention I have received but now we must get back to the nity gritty.  I have done loads of research and have come up with a plan.

The inside structure of the board will have Plascore Aluminum Honeycomb (or Nomex or Kevlar Honeycomb)  which is used in all modern aircraft today.  The adhesive used for the honeycomb shall be Redux 775 or Redux 308A/NA (commonly used Aerospace adhesive).  The edges, to form the shape will be filled with marine grade expansion foam (used in most modern fiberglass boats today) but I must still do research on the weight of this material.  And the two pieces of the outer aluminum shell shall be Tig welded or bonded together with a watertight adhesive, then powdercoated

Your thought and suggestions please!

For the poets who are hijacking my thread, may I suggest a forum to you.

Thanks, any help will be much appreciated

OK, OK, we won't criticize him for lack of safety protocol.

Back to the topic at hand.

What Kai does here at 1:10 demonstrates that he has the ability to get up, go and keep going indefinitely.

I am no downwinder but doesn't this suggest that he can hop from one wave source of energy and ride it until it fades then jump to the next available 'bump' and keep riding.  Unlike you longboarders he also requires MUCH, MUCH less energy to ride and cruise meaning less destruction of the power in the swell.

My only comparison is from windsurfing when we would sail downwind and partially ride swell, but they would fade.  More relevant is from big wave days when swells would set up a mile out to sea.  You could select your set wave (e.g. 1st, 2nd or 3rd . . ) and then ride on that wave front pushing higher and higher up wind until it broke on the reef and you would bottom turn.  Translate this experience to the outer set waves at Mavericks and the Magic starts all over again.

The mere fact that these fins were produced is testament to the fact that nobody knows what they are talking about when it comes to fins.

Fins make me nuts. . . . ohh yeah and why not add some gold flake while were at it.  "Watch how well these drive."

I am hopeful there is a Kai Lenny out there to show us something we never dreamed possible.  Not so sure about these sex fins.

Here is the video of Kai.

PS: Words are good, pictures better, Video Best.  I downloaded from Facebook and posted below.

I have found this to be the most effective converter.  I will likely do a post on how to pull things from Youtube or Facebook for all our benefit.

You didn't really say "no leash" did you???

The first rule of No Leash is: you do not talk about No Leash. The second rule of No Leash is . . . .

I noticed this too.  I don't want to sound like an old guy but WTF.  Kai is riding as if he was 100 feet from shore on a flat day.

We have all seen DJ's videos and what happens when you get separated from your equipment in the wind.  Kai better be ready to swim or  :o

I an also re-reading books on evolution by Richard Dawkins . . . .

The Selfish Gene (Evolutionary Biology) was one of my top 6 books ever.  Right up there with Guns Germs and Steel (Societal evolution), The Goal (How to Make Companies Money), A Random Walk on Wall Street (How to Save Money), Influence (Cialdini - How to Negotiate), and In Search of Shroedinger's Cat (On the dual slit experiment because Physics is cool).

I bought The Magic of Reality by Dawkins for my daughter(s) as an alternate to Church.  Just to keep things honest.

It's a kids book that suggests reality is cool enough.  We don't have to go any further to find fantastical stories and characters to idolize.

I also like to be able to dive deep to safety if I get caught with my board between me and a breaking wave. I wonder if a flotation vest might keep me in harm's way in that situation.

100% Wrong

I only hear these comments from surfers WHO HAVE NEVER USED A VEST.  This is akin to those who used to claim they didn't wear their seatbelts because they would rather 'Be flown free from the crashing vehicle.'

I have been using an O'Neill Gooru for 7 years and wear it in everything from 2 to 18 feet.  Above 18 feet I put on 2 vests.   This video shows my standard 'Kit' which includes:

Rashguard, High-School rib protector, O'Neill Gooru and Wetsuit.

This is a lot of float and typically puts the waterline 2" below my shoulder when vertical in the water.

When motivated I can still dive under a wave with one hand on the paddle.  1st Photo shows small conditions, 2nd shows upper limit of single vest.

PS:  Whatever your comfort level is with surf e.g. I'm comfortable to 6 ft, or 8 ft . . . a vest will immediately add 4 ft to your comfort level.

Random / Re: Self-defense for wife on eBike?
« on: November 23, 2016, 11:40:41 AM »
Have you ridden the trail on the eBike?

My older eBike will go 20 mph, my new one 35 mph.  At this speed the only thing that is going to catch you is a mountain lion.

I tend to sneak up on people and rely heavily on my bell to warn them.  Those with headphones are particularly annoying.

If is dark buy a light like this one.  If it is angled slightly up it will look like a train coming down the trail.  There is simply no way to see past the light and will therefore intimidate more than attract.  You will fly by before anyone realizes what is up as if you were traveling faster than the speed of sound.

There is an older woman who rides her bike with a light like this on the helmet.  It is really annoying because I can't look forward when she is coming towards me.  With that said it would work wonders to just stare at the bad guys because there is no way they could 1) See who you are or 2) Focus on any sort of forward aggression.
