Sessions / Re: Spray your friends part 2
« on: October 06, 2009, 07:29:54 PM »
i see my post ( and a couple others by others , responses that i really would loved to have read ) got deleted.  i must wonder why.... is it because i told someone here to play nice in our sand box? because the reality is that if someone were to pull that crap around here, he WOULD get set straight one way or the other.  this is a safety issue primarily --as in : even if you have total 100% control of your board and you dont do any physical damage, your " victim" DOES NOT FEEL SAFE.  and thats not why any of us are out in the water. this isnt about being aggro--to me and mine, "aggro" is the term you would apply to the sprayer, not the sprayee.  the sprayee is reacting defensively to the sprayers rude, asinine and juvenile behavior.  BTW  im not an asskicker, just like everybody else here, but im no victim either.
i find it odd and a bit disturbing that its perfectly alright to post pics of someone doing stupid things in the water and to for some folks to have a laugh about it, but its not OK to post regarding what some obviously considered rude & dangerous behavior and what the consequences would be if they encountered it ...why not remove the entire post? what, its OK to potentially put folks in danger in the water, but its not Ok for folks to correct the situation or express how that would get done?  there are two sides to this issue--you either think its the best thing since sliced bread or you just wont tolerate it at all.  in this case, one half of the coin is going unseen, and thats not right. admin: delete away as you wish...

cloclo...that was obviously in the flow of the ride that surfer was on...if anything the SUP guy should not have been paddling back out through the break...i hate when ANYBODY does that and  whats worse is when he burns the line of the person on the wave.

Gear Talk / costco SUP boards...
« on: September 27, 2009, 08:51:45 PM »
talked to to a friend that chatted with the rep in our costco. they were running board, fins, bag & generic wood paddle for around 9 hundred something for  9-10 footers and 11 hundred for 11-12 footers if i remember right. boards looked ok...sort of PSH AA-like except with a less aggressive rocker and a big bulbous nose. shaper from the B.I. , epoxy pop-outs .  in my limited opinion they were not for performance surfing...more for beginners and the curious....user friendly i suppose.
the rep told my friend that they had sold ( as of 2 days ago) 35 boards !!! im thinking...OMG we are so gonna be seeing these people out in the lineups.... the rep told him : " most of the people that bought them are beginners...you wont see them out in the lineup".......um..how much you wanna bet? cheap boards + beginners+ lineups = friction x danger =  >:(
next time i go in to costco, ive got to remember to ask the rep what they are doing as far a educating their buyers about reading conditions , staying within their limitations and how to surf politely.  i have a sneeky suspicion that there wasnt alot of educating going on while the money was changing hands...
   thoughts?

stoneaxe...yeah, i felt the irony of the situation as far as the whole SUP v. Shortboard thing goes. one of them , the guy in the rear seat was maybe early 50s.  the guy in front looked to be late 30s? its been a day now, and ive mulled it over some more...its just a bummer since they were really enjoying themselves and nobody out there has a problem with sharing or waveskis--it was the whole " hahaha look out people or your gonna get plowed hahaha" attitude they had that set everyone ( me more than most i guess) off.  at one point they were paddling back out and although they were just a tad too far away for us to clearly hear, what sounded like " these guy on there stand-ups hahaha blablabla stand-ups hehehe" was discernible.  lets just say the tone gave the impression that they were intentionally doing what they were doing and , well, that motivated me.

SUP General / gotta vent a little...

had fun today at our favorite eastside break. glass, with the occasional overhead set. all the usual suspects out and having ourselves a nice morning on the water.  out paddles two heros on a 2 man surf ski.  they park outside of the lineup and proceed to take off on the very first set wave and hoot and howl their way straight down the wave right through the line-up causing everyone to literally scatter and paddle like crazy to try and avoid contact.  i happend to be in the most direct line as they laughed their way down the wave. i paddled furiously and managed to avoid getting impaled as they cackled their way by.  " what the hell was that all about??!!" was the general opinion of everyone that got scattered.  this happend a couple more times.  i had enough.  i posted myself outside where they were and waited until something a little meatier came rolling through. i paddled hard and pulled in, pumped down the line a bit and there they were trying to shoulder hop as i knew they would be. i held my line, and didnt bother pretending that i was actually trying to surf the wave--i pretty much made a b-line towards them... ""Hey hey! " they yelled.  "heyheyhey yourselves!!!" was my reply and to their credit they backed off the wave. a guy that had been out with us that knew them started small talking me : " hey you're really shredding today" and waved over to them" hey so-and-so ! hows it going?", and then told me how they all used to charge big waves etc... like he was trying to give them a pass or something... a senior member of the lineup gave me kudos for putting them in their place, so im pretty comfortable with what i did.  i came no closer to them than they came to me--except that i was in control of myself and they were not when they came zooming through and almost hit me. they hung out further inside and to the side after that and  quietly caught a wave in shortly after.  the point here is that we were having a good time &  they were having a good time.  all they had to do was be a little more ..um, respectful of the line-up and there wouldnt have been an issue.  thoughts?

i sometime prone paddle back out to the lineup . the whole prone paddling back out to the line up thing can be looked at another way-- a very talented and fairly well known local SUP guy suggested it as a means of taking more time to get back out to the line-up , thus allowing others greater opportunity to get waves, rather than paddling one speed back out and snatching another. it could also be cross-training--maybe the guy also prone surfs of paddle boards and wants to keep his prone paddling muscles tuned.  either way, hogging and being greedy aint cool, no matter what you surf or how you propel yourself while doing so.
and i have to say, i whole heartedly agree with 1tuberider ...we need to integrate and blend, BUT we need to do so in a courteous manner and with a sharing heart.  aloha.

Gear Talk / Camera housings...

ok, hope this is the right place for this...im a very enthusiastic amateur shooter and have been furiously browsing the web for camera housings for either of my two DSLRs.  id love to mix my love of photography and my passion for SUP and shoot my buds and i having fun.  im aware of the whole GO-PRO set-up and i think they are great, especially for the price, but what im wanting to do is potentially produce high quality prints and to do that im sure my 5D or even my xt would be more suited.
anybody have a line on any companies or individuals that produce housings ( either custom or stock) for DSLRs ? ive found a few online but would like to see what others may be using before deciding. is there a 'used '  housing market place that i can checkout?
also, since im new to in the water surf shooting--whats the preferred lens type...mid range telephoto....or more of a wide angle....?
mahalo for any and all advice and input. aloha!

Travel, Trips, Destinations / Re: Waikiki board rentals
« on: July 26, 2009, 11:56:17 AM »
not sure of the name of the rental business, but its the one with the boards lined up in racks along the ( when your facing the ocean) left side of Dukes...its along the side walkway to the bar--i saw a couple of lairds and even a couple PSH boards chained up there. last year i rented a board from one of the tents on the beach--but i had to put up with what they had, which wasnt too fun and the paddle was too short even for me.  theres also a guy that is set up just to the right of the LG tower by the HPD sub-station/ snack bar that i was told has PSH and C4 boards.  so the short answer is , yes, some of the rental places have decent, even good, stuff....hope that helps.
