Foil SUP / Re: Switch to Prone (Pros/Cons)
« on: May 03, 2021, 01:09:46 PM »
100% pumping back out will be easier on a prone.  From riding several different SUP boards and a few prone boards - I will say with absolute certainty that pumping on a smaller board is much much easier.  I can almost always get 2 for 1s on prone anytime I want to.  On my SUP I can only get it once or twice a session - and I've worked really hard to optimize this setup for pumping (perfect placement of the foil, lightest construction possible, etc).  There is just no margin for error once you make a mistake pumping a SUP - AND it is a lot more work.  I'm completely gassed on my SUP when I make the transfer turn onto the second wave.

I think the really lightweight guys can make the SUP go well because they can ride a really small (short and light) SUP.  Derek looks like he's riding a 70-80L SUP that can't be even 5' long.  Pretty huge difference compared to my 5'8" 115L.  I can really tell the difference in pumping when I drop down to my 107L board at only a half pound lighter and same length.

Hdip - awesome thank you, much appreciated. I reckon I'll be OK once I've made it to my feet evan if my feet are not quite in the right place. I've spent 200 hours + on foil and can switch from natural to goofy on foil (after a gybe in winging) and been out in some fairly big seas. Its the lack of fire power in my arms for paddling, crap pop up technique and picking the right waves which I will find tricky. Learning is cool though..

OH!
you'll be fine then.  I wouldn't worry about which foil or which board.  For you its going to be all about finding the right wave and being in the right spot.  After that everything will be easy since you have so much time on foil.

A nice big board will work great as long as it isn't big surf that you have to paddle out through.

1) I'd personally start with your small foil, you want minimal lift as you're learning to catch waves, otherwise it'll buck you off the back as you try to stand up.  Put it back in the boxes as well while learning
2) depends on the wave.  I don't think it is less critical, I think you need to be standing before you gather too much speed and certainly before the foil has fully engaged
3) I keep both feet centerline.  getting them right fore-aft is also super important, no time to adjust
4) sounds right for sure
5) No, I don't think so.  My experience is that the reason to ride a smaller board is so it disappears when you're in the air and the tradeoff is that it will be harder to catch a wave.   A poorly shaped big board can be worse than a well shaped small board.  But all things being equal you've got to be  better positioned and paddle harder on a smaller board.

I highly recommend the wizard hat shim kit.  Pretty simple kit and works well.

On my aluminum mast kit, the fuselage was machined to connect to the mast with excessive angle of attack on the foil.  So I took a machinist's file to the mast and put a few degrees of angle on the mast itself.  I think that's an older fuselage part and the newer ones have the angle sorted out.

I'm having really good luck with the XM .313" Hand-Tied leashes.  Reasonably enough priced, ships fast, 100% made in the US including the cord.

straps!

coulda done without the bro-brah rich white guy instagram influencer

My only response to this is - never underestimate the power of people willing to risk massive bodily harm to push forward a concept!    Google EHang if you want to see the same thing, but backed by a billion USD combined with the power of a Chinese government happy to motor on despite a few people dead from crashes.

I'm curious to hear what people have found in practice.  When going upwind, the force resisting the wing is primarily going to be coming from the fact that the foil is tilted in the water and so the direction of lift is partially upwards and partially to windward.  The mast might have a little lifting effect - probably far more than could be obtained from the tips of the tail.

I took 220 grit sanding block to the wing-tips and rounded them off.  They're probably 2/3rds the size they started at and no discernible change to how it rides.

I'm 90kg without wetsuit, for SUP and prone in weak waves the 1210 is money.  If its bigger the 980 is nice.  If I only was going to ride one wing, it would be the 1210 - works great in everything.

17,000 wings??!?!

That is a lot of wings - way more than I thought the market could bear and that’s just one brand.

They are all M6 torx flatheads.  You should be able to find the torx size based on that info, sorry, I don’t know offhand.

I did come here to post that I am just about done with my gofoil set.  I have been keeping the 190 and 220 NL around for really small days, but I’m finding with the 1210 I don’t really need them.  I went out this morning in really small conditions and did just fine - in fact I had a blast.  The 1210 is just so fast and has crazy good lift for how surfy it is.  For sure I can get out of the water earlier and pump into waves earlier with the bigger NL wings, but they aren’t near as fun to ride.

We may see my GF up in gear swap soon.  Raising money for a Cerberus mast system because the Takuma aluminum mast is a real dog weight wise.

what a nice privilege the pros have to not worry about gear if/when they fall.  Sure they are super talented and aren't falling much, but to know that if they did they can just ditch the gear.  It does cross my mind whether I'm about to have a $1000 session if I ruin something or worse should I get myself hurt.  In generally, I'd rather not have that risk hanging over my head on my sessions - I can have plenty of fun without the risk.

343
where is this?  don't recognize the map

344
I may end up travelling there semi-frequently over the next few years for some manufacturing happening in town there.  If there is anyone here who knows the coastline and wave spots there - I would love to pick your brain.  Happy to do it privately if you want to send me a PM, or we can discuss here.

looks like 3D printed material
The NSI one is routed out of billet and is probably stronger.  But weight tradeoff here is negligible so if its beefed up enough, it looks like it will work just as well.
