Gear Talk / Sunova Style v Style XL
« on: February 17, 2016, 12:11:18 PM »
Hi, looking at the 10'6 Style as a classic longboard/noserider style SUP.   Has anyone ridden the 10'6 and the XL version - thoughts, comparison?  Thanks.

Gear Talk / JL Stiletto 14
« on: September 20, 2015, 12:03:28 PM »
Hi, I'm struggling to find reviews of this board, anyone ridden one?  My intended use would be fast flatwater cruising, I'm 200lbs.  Interested in its stability esp in chop.  Also, I had an old board with a similar nose, it was always getting pushed off the wind.  How does the Stiletto handle that?  Thanks.

Gear Talk / 14 footer for flatwater and occasional downwinding
« on: August 09, 2015, 01:59:36 PM »
Hi, looking to pickup a used 14 for flatwater lake paddling (no racing) and maybe a bit of downwinding.

Thinking around 28 or 29 wide, for decent stability.   I'm in the UK, so has to be one of the brands available here, eg Starboard, Fanatic, JL if I'm lucky.   I'm 200lbs, what board would you guys recommend.  Thanks.

SUP General / Paddle length calculation
« on: May 02, 2015, 09:59:51 AM »
Hi,
Need some advice before shortening my  carbon surf paddle....

On holiday I use an adjustable paddle and found it suited me best at 6” over my height.    The paddle had a blade that was 17” long,  and the shaft measured 61”.

So, looking to shorten my surf paddle to the same size, but it’s blade is only 13” long.   I’m figuring that the shaft length is the important measurement as, with the top of the blade in the water, that will give me the same hand/arm positions as the paddle I used on holiday?

But, if I go ahead, I’ll end up with a paddle that is 74” long  (61” shaft + 13” blade)  That comes out at only 2” overhead.

Any thoughts on this, is ignoring the blade length the best approach?

Thanks in advance.

Flatwater and Touring / Flatwater paddle, English Lake District
« on: November 02, 2014, 08:47:35 AM »
I was lucky and caught Derwentwater Lake on a wind-free day recently.  The lake is about 3 miles long so just a nice distance to paddle solo.

As I'd just got a GoPro I decided to try it out on the lake before taking it out in waves.  Works really well and very handy on a chest mount, paddle didn't spoil the video as much as I feared.  Only thing is the ultra wide view made the stunning mountains look more like small hills!   Lesson learned, use the GoPro for action and my waterproof Fuji for Flatwater.

Gear Talk / surf sups and single fins.
« on: May 25, 2014, 03:53:38 AM »
In prone surfing, many longboarders prefer a big single fin especially for noseriding.  Does the same apply to sup boards, most I see in the 9 to 10 foot range seem to be 2+1 setups.  Anyone spent any time riding a mid-size board eg 9'6 x 32 as a single fin?  Would be interested to know how it worked.

Gear Talk / NSP 9'8 Coco

Hi,
looking for reviews of the new NSP 9'8 x 32 board.  The CocoMat vern is apparently 9.5kg  Anyone surfed one yet? Thanks.

Gear Talk / Ching Race fins
« on: May 06, 2013, 03:17:53 AM »
I’m after a fin for my 12’6 race board and am looking at the Danny Ching models as they are available where I live (UK).   I’m looking to add a little extra primary stability to the board, which is used for lake touring, coastal runs and a little downwinding.  No racing.

The supplied fin is a dolphin surf-style fin, not that much area for a board which has 280l volume and a square tail.

Has anyone used these fins and can you tell me the difference between the Ching Race Fin and the Spitfire model.  Which might be more suitable.   Thanks.

Downwind and Racing / New Downwinder
« on: March 14, 2013, 12:13:40 PM »
Hi, looking to do my first downwind run.    :)

No-one local to ask so I need a bit of advice.  Main question is wind direction - how far off of blowing "straight from  behind" can you get away with?  And if there's a side-on section, what's the best technique for that?   Thanks.

Gear Talk / Handle - which way round
« on: January 13, 2013, 08:43:20 AM »
Hi,
I'm cutting down my new Carbon paddle, found good instructions on the Forum, but some (old) debate about which way round the handle goes.

The handle I have has one side with a deep curve, the other side is much flatter. Similar to the one in the photo.  Does the deep curve go on the palm-side, or is the deep curve for the fingers to sit in?  Tried both ways and can convince myself either feels good!  Thanks

Gear Talk / Race board rail tape
« on: December 28, 2012, 12:45:55 PM »
Hi, my surf sup has rail-tape fitted and as a result the rails are in great condition.  I'd like to put the same tape on my Race board, but the tape is only 2" wide.  My question is to any Race-board owners who've fitted tape, - did you tape just the widest point or the full height of the rail?
Where you see chipped rails it's often the underside that is damaged, but the widepoint is at the top of the rail.  What works?  Thanks.

Technique / Offshore winds
« on: October 09, 2012, 12:16:30 PM »
Hi, I've noticed a big difference when paddling for waves on an offshore day.  Even light'ish winds seem to massively hurt board-speed.  Any advice on how to get round this.  Thanks.

Gear Talk / Coastal run board
« on: August 06, 2012, 12:10:23 PM »
Hi, Ive got a good 11' crossover board, 180l.  It's fine for my weight (205 lb), and does most of what I want it to.

My question is;  how much faster would a 12 or 12'6 flatwater board really be on coastal runs.  And why has this sort of board got way more buoyancy?  What would be a good move up to a board in this size range, not intending racing, just longer cruises.

Gear Talk / Starboard Drive or similar
« on: July 04, 2012, 12:18:13 PM »
Hi,
I’m ready to move down from the board I learned on, looking for a board to use for coastal runs and surf up to 6’ max.   I’m after something between 10’ and 10’6, with 150-160l volume.  First thought is a Starboard Drive but how good are they, and what do folks think is the best construction to go for.  Also, what other boards would fit the bill please?
