Environment / Re: Californians - Vote YES on Prop 67
« on: November 05, 2016, 02:00:37 PM »
Glad to mostly see support for Prop 67 on the 'Zone.  This is an example of well-thought out environmental legislation that took its queues from over 100 local ordinances in CA.

California actually passed this statewide ban TWO YEARS AGO, but the plastic bag industry spent millions to collect enough signatures to force a referendum vote.  This is literally CA vs. Big Plastic.  Every beach & ocean loving Californian ought to get behind this...

If the green agenda is aiming at litter-trash, shouldn't they be looking at the other stuff?
Outlaw all of it and no more litter.

Bags are a starting point for what you're saying here.  "Outlaw all of it" is easier said than done, my friend.  We are up against powerful & well-funded industries which profit immensely from our addiction to disposable items, the true costs of which are externalized to the environment.  The shift needs to start somewhere.

Yeah, not that hard to change out a deck pad.  Shouldn't be much if any charge to install one--just mark and measure.  In any case--what makes you say it's worn out?  Looks pretty clean in the picture.  Is it not providing sufficient traction?  That, or if it's physically falling off, would be the only reason I'd change it out.

Not sure why you need to know the exact liters--more important to figure out if it works for you.

One other question--are you sure the lengths are right?  is your pic distorted in some way?  Looks like a lot more than 4" difference in length between the 9'2 and the 8'10.

I'll give it my best shot & see what happens. My knees were bleeding from paddling out on my knees.  There's not much traction at all. It's an old board so the traction is SUPER thin if any in some areas.  That's why I thought it would be hard for me to remove.  Looks caked/melted into the board it's been used so long if that makes any sense.

Guess I'm looking for liters to know what I'm riding.  Let's say in 6 months -1 year I'm ready to downsize.  I don't know what to downsize to cause I don't know the exact volume.

Maybe the towels they were standing on & the lean had something to do with it.  I'll measure everything tonight, post pics for opinions for accuracy & try to get an exact measurement.

Quick addition to the deckpad project - if you're gonna stick a new deckpad on, you don't need to clean off all the sticky residue left by the old one.  Just throw the new one on top & you're golden.

Secondly - SS & Super Simmons are 2 different models... and the funny thing is.... your board kinda doesn't look like either  :o

I forgot there was an SS model. I was saying SS for Super Simmons.  The guy I bought it from did a Super Simmons template w/ a few adjustments.  You can tell by the rails it's a Super Simmons.

So you don't think I need the goo gone eh.

Thanks for the input, much appreciated.

Ah-hah, that makes sense... the wide world of customs.

I replaced a deckpad once; peeled the old one off & threw a new one right over it.  Used goo gone in a couple spots where the new pad didn't cover the old one's marks, but that was it.

The guy behind Foundation Training, Eric Goodman, is on the Paddlewoo podcast twice.  Definitely recommend listening to the latest one -

http://paddlewoo.com/eric-goodman-interview-diving-deeper-into-foundation-training/

And all of these podcasts.  Dude is seriously geeked-out on paddle surfing... and I mean that as a compliment.

I cycle between low back pain & shoulder pain from paddle surfing.  I am trying to do one "founder" a day for a month, to see if it helps.

Those Fusions are a few years old but definitely a step up from your Bru. My friend used to have one & it's a pretty fun board!  He's 185 and I weigh 170, it was fun for us at that beginner/intermediate stage for sure.  You'll adjust to the narrower width fairly quick.

I was at the swap meet too & man there were some deals to be had!  I was trying to sell a board, and ended up getting one instead.  Whoops.

« on: October 10, 2016, 11:07:06 PM »

Apologies for the late answer.

I weigh 80 kg and 8'5 floats me fine. It is a quite stable board for its size and volume. It takes some time to get used to domed deck but it really helps to the stability of the board as Bert explains in his video. I love his designs and the build quality is superb. My second Sunova will be a Style for sure.

Thanks for the responses, all.  I feel confident that I'd be solid on the 8'5... definitely a board that may be in my future.

@nalu-sup interesting comparison btw. I'm so used to longboard SUPs that when I demo'd the 8'10, it felt like a revelation to me.  Easy late drops, easy to turn, and easier on to catch & stay planing a mushy wave than the Sunova Style I'd tried right before it.  There is definitely magic in that shape.

After a few purchases that resulted in over-foaming, my buddies and I have started using these ranges (ratios of 1.3-ish to 1.55-ish)--smaller for a bit more challenge/performance and bigger for more challenging conditions (of course adjusting width/length/shape as well to suit conditions, skill and preferences):

145 lbs: 85-101 L
155 lbs: 91-109 L
165 lbs: 97-116 L
175 lbs: 103-123 L
185 lbs: 109-130 L
195 lbs: 115-137 L
205 lbs: 121-144 L
215 lbs: 127-151 L
225 lbs: 133-158 L
235 lbs: 139-165 L
245 lbs: 144-172 L

Curious what some of you think about these ranges for that low to upper intermediate skill range?  Think we're out to lunch?  Do they fit what you find yourself riding?

I'm 170 lbs & I think you hit the nail on the head.  After 4.5 yrs of paddle surfing w/ no prior surf experience, I've recently arrived at 100L as my "comfortable but still challenging" zone.  115-120 and I feel confident in most conditions.  130 is stable as a barge.  Gimme another year & I'll probably go down 10-15 liters... maybe.

Looking back, I don't think it would have been smart to start off anywhere below the 140-160L range (at my weight)... it's better to be stable & catching waves while you're just learning, IMO, and the increased performance of a smaller board means squat when you're just learning how to catch waves and turn.

Great for experienced paddle surfer or kids/teens as an all-round.  8'0 x 28 x 4 101L

Gear Talk / Re: Board Bag (warning - stupid question)
« on: October 09, 2016, 11:35:02 PM »
It also depends on the board you're using, your storage situation, etc..

Are you getting a hi-end super lightweight $3000 carbon race board?  BAG IT.

Storing it outside or in a tight place where it's easy to bump things? BAG IT.

Do you need to walk down a curvy staircase followed by a narrow corridor before throwing on your car? BAG IT.

And also, are you concerned about resale value and keeping the board looking nice?  BAG IT.

That's my take.  Like others who've posted, I'm kinda 50/50 about bagging & it typically depends on all the factors above.  But no one will argue that it's a great way to protect your investment.  Especially for race/touring boards, they're just so long & easy to bag into sh*t -  it's really smart to store & transport them in a bag.

Some bags are heavy-duty, I'd point you towards a lighter one if you plan to use your board often & keep it bagged.  It's nice to NOT add 10 lbs. to your board when carrying.

Xtuf (s) shaft with a Ho'ola 84 blade.

Used to have a Maliko 95 blade, like the Ho'ola better for my shoulders and for quicker strokes.

I really wish I surfed enough to make a surf-style board worth it. I tried, and I ended up feeling like an idiot for having this ornament sitting around. When it's almost two hours to the waves, it's wishful thinking, except on  vacation. With an (almost) indestructible all-around, I can double the duty of the board as rock-hopper and occasional wave runner.

Isn't Pau Hana doing a 12'6" Touring Board in their Ricochet construction?  Kinda seems like you're the target market for one!
