No doubt, Surfline has its challenges. Not only do they have to chase technology, a ton of locals sabotage their cameras on a regular basis. Given the owner passed away last Christmas, they are probably struggling to find their way. Sean was the very involved in the entire process and truly had a love for the ocean. He ran Surfline for 20 years, sold it, and bought it back after the new owners couldn't manage the process. The stand-alone model has very skinny margins, and the infrastructure is tricky at best. For those of us old enough to remember 976-surf, we are probably a bit more forgiving !

I was out a few weeks ago at my local so cal spot. Small and spotty, but the sun was going down and I just wanted to catch a few before sunset. I'm all alone for about 15 minutes until a couple of girls paddle out. It's a friendly break where everyone knows each other and they all play fair. I grab a waist high right-hander and this young lady hops the shoulder, takes it off the lip twice and then kicks out. I continue along my way and kick out before the shore break. I paddle back out and she hops me again... only this time she looks right at me and laughs as she tears into a little chest high roller. I smile and paddle back out. I let a few go and grabbed a nice left about shoulder high. She paddles across the peak and drops in on me... smiling the entire time. I finally paddle over to her to let her know she needed to respect her elders. Before I say word one, she blurts out " Hey old man, when your done sweeping up out here, why don't you go vacuum my house !" All I could do was laugh... If a 5X world champion can have a sense of humor about SUS, why can't everyone ?

I use the Garmin 310XT on the board, bike, run, and hike. Water resistant (almost proof), accurate and easy to use. It has a HR monitor, the download is wireless, and can be used anywhere. As DW said, Garmin connect is a nice tool.
It takes a few minutes to grab a signal, and then you're off... I have mine set on auto-stop /auto resume, so if I'm on a run or on the bike and hit a light, it automatically stops and starts with movement. When you're done, you hit stop and just set it within 10 feet of your computer, it automatically downloads your workout. Very clean interface. I use mine daily and I generally get about 3 years out of them.

Yep... Back on Tues. There are currently 18 kites out at Sunset. First good clearing wind of the fall.
The SD guys need to make the roadtrip. Launch at Cabrillo, stay on the breakwater, then turn left to Long Beach/Naples Harbor. Much easier than making the reach to Surfside/ Seal. Plenty of parking at 2nd and PCH. Great cool down and plenty of places to eat/drink once you get into the harbor.

SL is a friggin' stud. As you can see from the pics, he brought a knife to a gun fight... and won. Two hours of victory at sea, all after a solid surf session in the AM. More boats than bumps, more dumps than runs, but warm water, sunshine, and blue water trumped all.
