I got a great deal on a 14x22 Ninja. Problem is...I've been on a 14x28 raft (RS AirGlide) and the difference is quite shocking. I learned the hard way that March water temps are not ideal for learning to paddle a narrow board!

The only remorse right now is going from a 28 to a 22 is quite a jump!

Starting tomorrow (March 9), four days of 70 degrees in the forecast for Wash DC and the Mid-Atlantic. I can't wait to get the new Ninja out on the water!

2020 NSP ninja for the win. For $1200 I just couldn't pass it up. Sure, the new technology for the SB Sprint might make it a faster board but its much heavier and $1400 more (w/o shipping costs). I have no buyers remorse 1 day later but still need to challenge myself on a much narrower board.

Gear Talk / Volume Question for 85kg paddler« on: March 04, 2021, 02:28:13 AM »
The 2020 NSP Ninja (14'0x22) has an advertised volume of 250.6 Liters. I see that all the online volume calculators tell me that I should be fine but I'm wondering from experienced paddlers...will this volume (~ 250L) to weight (85kg/187lbs.) work out for me? My weight fluctuates 5kg (80-85) depending on the season, so I'm currently at my max weight.

To complicate matters consider the following purchase options:
New 2021 Sprint 14x21.5 ($2600); New 2020 Javelin 14x22 ($2300), Used 2020 Ninja ($1200). Which would you purchase? 25
Gear Talk / Re: 2020 NSP Ninja vs Naish Javelin vs Starboard Sprint (wood construction)« on: March 03, 2021, 06:28:17 AM »The 2020 model boards are starting to get discounted and I'm curious if anyone has a review to offer for the following two boards (14 x 24): Also want to consider the new 2021 Sprint in wood construction 14 x 23.5. So what is the consensus Javelin or Ninja or Sprint? 26
SUP General / Re: Anyone in Mid-Atlantic Still Paddling?« on: March 01, 2021, 09:16:22 AM »I did get out on the 21st. I wore a wetsuit for the first time on a SUP. The sun never came out but it was dead calm with thick fog - one of my favorite types of paddling conditions. Over the past 40 days, the water fowl on my reservoir has changed quite a bit. migratory birds that were not there over the summer have inhabited the reservoir since around Nov 1. Its really cool to see. During my fog paddle, I saw 4 to 6 huge swans - never before have I noticed them on the reservoir. It was an amazing site to see, and on a personal level really connected with me. According to this map, indeed, many swans do winter over in the mid-Atlantic, perhaps my small reservoir was just an intermediate stop? I saw the swans again this morning (first time on the water in nearly 2-months). This time it was a much larger group of about 20 swans. 27
Technique / Can Crossbow Turns Replace Buoy Turns Completely?« on: January 03, 2021, 06:53:03 AM »
I've just completed by first 6-months of SUP. I'm hooked! Nevertheless, still a lot to learn. I never mastered the buoy turn (never really got the courage to try and now the water is too cold) but I did get fairly proficient at crossbow turns to the point where I can change direction rapidly with usually one or two strokes. My question is...for racing, will this single turning capability be enough? Are there times when a racer must have an effective buoy turn in their quiver?

Tomorrow, Dec 21, is forecasted to be 47 F with light winds. I'm thinking about heading out. Most of the 4-5 inches that fell in Northern VA has melted so I'm excited to get some sun and good strokes.

Yes indeed. Case in point...me! I was looking for something to do while nursing a hamstring injury. The local reservoir opened in May 2020 after being closed for years. The pandemic allowed me to practice every day. So since early June, I've paddled every day with only a few exceptions. I'm hooked!
