Do you guys think there is a minimum board size to make better chance of success easier? 11' or 12' easier than a 10'?

Pierre,

Are you height column feet & inches, or feet & dismal points (tenths) ?

Most of what is published on board size in reference to new boards is about weight and skill. To easily factor in height, could we have a "rule of thumb" that could some up your chart?
Maybe something like.
Every 1" over 5'9 add 3 or-4 lbs to your weight; And; every 1" under 5'9" subtract 3 or 4 lbs?

I have 2 of the 11' Ocean Nalu's.
They are just as fast as my 11' Hulakai surf type SUP and they track about the same. I have them mainly for guest to try out/touring. Comfortable with lending them to family & friends & don't have to worry about damaging them like a standard SUP.
Little lighter at 38-40 lbs than the 12.5's and I think they are more durable than the Bic's.

The con is, folks over 200lbs feel more comfortable/stable on the 11' x 32" surf SUP than the 11' Nalu's.

My hope with the a seat option hybrid, was that my wife would be more likely to get involved with paddling.  No luck so far  :-\

Well of course I was doing it quickly and not paying attention, the saw caught the wood and somehow sucked my hand into the blade.

Ouch, mine got sucked into the blade from about 12" away. It was so fast i did not even see my hand go near the blade. After 10-15 second of  looking for the piece that flew across the room i looked at my hand, only to see some fingers were facing the wrong directions.

My friend, sometimes even if you are cautious you can have that happen.

.

My dad just lost 2 1/2 fingers to the joiner 4 weeks ago.  It was so bad they gave him a helicopter ride to the hand surgeon, so that they sent you the next day speaks well for small amount of damage you did, or so we can hope.

Celeste, this might sound weird, but at some point when the scares are heeled, ask your dad if you can touch his injured hand. If he say Ok, hold his hand with both your hands for a moment.

I can't tell you why, but it may help him in a emotional way. I can say i did morn for my fingers hand, and someone else holding it  helped me In a way I did not even know i needed help with.  Loosing fingers can be hard in different ways. Good new you do get use to it pretty quickly.

.

Heal up fast and please be careful, and that is to everyone, myself included because I know I get lax and stupid in the shop all the time

+1

Gear Talk / Re: Anybody paddle a Creed Sup board?
« on: September 22, 2012, 11:01:40 PM »
Thanks Jake, thats what i needed to know. 19.8 lbs is pretty close to there claim. I think the S-Kai 10 should float my190lbs.

Apparently the board they smack with the pipe is a  "patented DekEFX substrate" . I think that it's a type of 3Dfiberglass job. They only use that on the 12'2" and the 12'6, it's too rigid for surf SUPs.

Thanks Jake,  I could not find any specs on the 9'6" surf. Do you no the specs (liters) of the 9'6"?   The 10 footer Surf says it's 140 liters, and the 9 is said to be 114 liters. So if the 9'6" is 127ish  is floating you to me that seems very  good.  Learning  to surf on a board that small seem like it would be a challenge without some surfing experience.

Do you no what your board actually (on a scale) weights?

I'm looking for some input from folks who have paddled a "Creed SUP" Paddleboard.

I saw an add on the zone about this company. Looking at the site they seem to have some good things going for them. Two of their boards caught my eye. The 12'2" and the 140 liter 10' surf SUP. Any feedback about them would be appreciated.

I'm so jealous, i can't help you with prices...  But i can tell you if the surf is small in Rincon, consider Wilderness, if  is not big for Wilderness, Surfers beach would be on my list. Hopefully you'll catch Rincon pumping, love that place.

SUP General / Re: PFD's. Really?
« on: September 17, 2012, 10:49:58 AM »
There has to be a a few active duty or reserve Coast Guard SUPers here on the forum. It might be good to get there input or ask them to look into it. Coast Guards are a small group, even enlisted men can have the ear of some of the brass.

There use to be a district headquarter in long beach, Ca back when i was in the CG. That might be a good starting point those concerned SUPer's living in that area.

I think you're right about that, Celeste, on both the rationale for why the Coast Guard made the rule and also the way we as a community can change it. I'm not a huge opponent of the PFD rule, especially because a lot of problems with the newbies could have been avoided if they had PFDs, but the rule itself needs a little more sense.

We can change it if we work on it. What would be good alternative rules?

What newbe problems could be avoided by having PFD?

It would seem that a leash would be better than a PFD in every case i can think of.

« on: September 14, 2012, 04:11:03 PM »
I'm just a newby on SUPs so i don't really race, but I use a 25" Ace (like) board for the challenge reason also. 6' 4" & 190lbs it does keep me on my toes and i really enjoy the tippyness. I've only had it a week & had it out 5 times but i think it was a good call. It may be to early to say for sure.  I thought about possible going to a smaller fins as time progresses to keep it challenging. I'm hoping it helps a little paddling while surfing.

WTF? You paid for an ACE...then didn't get an ACE and you are okay with that?
Good question, Okay with it? I have to ask myself "If i'm not okay with it am i going to do?" Shipping was $240, send it back?

I'm just not sure where i could go with that fight. If i knew the concave really made a difference in performance...  But I'm not sure a flat vs slight concave bottom section is really going to make much difference in a over all negative way.

The only downside to this cockpit is my feet are below the water line by about 3/8". But i'm not sure that at 190lbs that my feet would be dry in a Ace ether.

It really is a nice board, it was a race board for a sponsored racer, got it at a good price, so if they take care of the lost fin issue I'll be okay with it.

so, Fishman--any ride reports on the ACE yet?  Oversized guys everywhere are pulling for ya!
Hey BB,

Finally paid for and received my 14x 25 Ace board. :) But my Ace turned out to not be a Ace after all. It Is 14' X25" and looks like a Ace, but the bottom is flat (no concave section) and the cockpit is a little different. That can happen when you buy a used board via photos from a SUP shop  3000 miles away. (you would think a SUP Shop would know what a Ace is)

Anyway i took it out this morning for the first time. Cool morning about 60 degrees with a good 8- 10 knot wind. It was like the first day on a SUP all over again. Paddled the first 30 minutes up wind, my upper body was only working half speed, but no relaxing for my calves or nerves.  Knees bent & trying to stay loose i felt like i really had to focus on what i was doing. I was going faster than ever but not really putting much effort into the paddling part. The board flipped and flopped from side to side maybe a dozen times. Boat wakes were very concerning and caused some major butt puckering :(. I did not expect to exerciser that muscle today. I wanted challenging, and i got it.

1 hour paddling and Not much of a physical workout. Staying dry was the goal. It was fun, it was fast, and it was challenging. Now if get comfortable enough, I could get back to paddling hard then it should be a good fun board.

Is it going to improve my balance? I can't see see how it wouldn't help it. Time will tell.

Thanks B & Fit.

Huh, You know, the board doesn't say Ace anywhere.
I don't think mine is a Ace after all. The signature says "Elite Racing Design". I'm puzzled, I bought it as a 2011 Ace. It looks like a standard production board AST, it even says made in Thailand. :-\
