Events / APBA -Salibury Race Report

This is half infomercial and half race report. Saturday kicked off the first of 6 BOB style races at Salisbury beach in Massachusetts actually 1 will be in at York beach in Maine. We had 5 elite women and around 11 elite men and both events were exiting with a small surfable bump to navigate on the way out and in and a rolling swell keeping you paying attention going around the marks.
The men's first place finisher Patrick from Martha's Vineyard was riding a Naish Glide and finally rolled over Andrew Keller early in the second lap to begin pulling way. Andrew was riding the Corban alpha 12'6 and gave a valiant effort to stay close on a dedicated downwind board in a BOP style race. In the small women's field the winner Marta Downing(me) was pushed start to Finish by an ascendent Danielle Deforest. I rode Patricks Glide(thanks Surfari Machester) and Danielle was well armend with a 404. The first place men finished in just under 33 minutes and the women in just over 40. We were all smoked after fighting wind, current and side swell. It was super fun.
The venue is AMAZING. This place was made for a SUP event. Salisbury beach is welcoming to north and south swells and in the five races I have done there we have alway had a surfable wave. Well some people could surf the pounding shore break from Irene last summer some people(like myself) were thankful just to survive it and stand on dry sand. The Surf Side Five restaurant has a large deck that looks out directly over the venue, like you can pass Rum Punch over for energy drink directly. The beach and the restaurant deck allows dogs!!! how cool. The event has 20k in price money. I walked home with $300 bucks. Teva is the presenting sponsor and is giving out shoes like chic-lets. Revo is on hand with Sunglasses and the local surf shops are coming with gift certificates.
After the races about 20 of us were out in the surf catching waves and waiting on a decision about a surf contest. No go- to many kids in the water so onto the awards ceremony and cold PBR pounders with lime(my personal touch)
Parking is free. I have done the Cape Bay Crossing, the Paddle to the Point in Oqonquit and The Newport SUP cup. To combine a beach day, an excellent course, a lobster roll and all the fun people watching of Salisbury Beach this venue and race deserves a try. Yes I am trying to get more competitors to participate and bring up the overall competition and depth of the fields. Its cheap. hello you don't not have peel off a ben franklin for this race or hit your friends and family up for the fortieththousanth time for money for charity. You pay 40 bucks and get to it.
