Unlike the Naish board, the new Kalama requires the Axis mast plate to be all the way forward for equal foot pressure. I'm using a single extra-long front foot strap set all the way forward.

Strap all the way forward? try moving front strap back, you're on a SUP you should have room to play around a bit. bring your front foot closer to foil if you can't bring foil closer to front foot

think of how much weight you could have gotten rid of with a small tow board/foil setup though.

In other words, narrower is better, if you can control it (balance, etc)

Turtle Bay, Oahu

can wing next to hotel, or just down the road in either direction are some other options, just lighter winds than Maui

Pono do you have any problems with your batteries if your car sits for 6mo without use?

Please ask KW why the leading edge handle on the unit's is so wimpy. Even the new "beefed up" version is wimpy, soft, and flexy. Makes controlling the wing while riding waves or downwinding way way harder. Amazing wings otherwise, but what were/are they thinking with that luff handle?

In a ridiculous turn of events, Diane is replacing her Chevy Volt with a new Model Y, and I'm getting the hand-me-down. I'm going to sell the van (it's worth more) and switch to the Volt.

Sell the van for a case of beer???

I am super impressed by what everyone is doing with foils these days and I have enjoyed seeing the progress on all of those purpose built designs.  I am approaching this from a perspective of swimming, prone paddleboarding and bump chasing.  A set of arms and a wind generated Gorge swell is pretty well the lowest power scenario I know of for bump catching or foiling.  Yes, in my dreams, these are massive foilers and swell missiles, but in reality I will be stoked with much more mundane pleasures.  Anyone who has experienced a whipped up Gorge knows that just being out there is magical.  I have been missing that.  The process of getting geared up for a reentry has me fully juiced.  That alone is worth the price of admission.

This whole project sounds fun. Haha next summer Admin is going to be doing Swim Missile tours in the Gorge.  I'd sign up for a session.
Stoked for you. You'll prob need to go to Maui and do some Maliko testing with Pono this winter.

Yeah I've been enjoying the 999 with the silly short advanced fuse and 300 tail. Only problem I have is I've run out of room in my boxes. Guess I just love front foot pressure...

If there are any waves, make your jibe on the wave/swell so you can just foil along toe side riding the swell as you add more wing power.  That's how I learned toeside,  jibe onto small swell let the swell give me power while I figure out the arm/body position to make the wing feel more comfortable, then add more wing power, turn more upwind, and you're good to go.

I've also been using a weight belt like the jayefo (recently tried to order a jayefo belt and the order got cancelled, out of stock, I guess they only currently have size L) for over a year now.  The metal will rust on you, so luckily they are cheap, though I replaced mine with a metal loop that came with my dakine maniac hook strap.  I did have the velcro come undone on me in the surf, so I added another overlap of velcro just to keep the end of the velcro down.  (Imagine the way a leash connects to a board)

I also added 2 leash strings to the belt, one at each hip.  Wing connects to one, and board connects to other.  Though I will prob get a reel leash for the board soon.  When crashing in waves I had a lot of wing damage last winter because the board and wing were the same distance from me and would get tangled together.

I was in the gorge for a couple days a few weeks ago.  Wed the 10th was a really good day, lots of wind.  I was on my 2.8m up near the hatchery (I'd upwinded from the event center) when I noticed a loose wing.  It looked like another guy had just tried to catch it but he missed.  Here's my video of me chasing it.

The leash was a waist leash that uses a plastic buckle to attach around you waist.  One of the plastic prongs had broken off.  After slowly shlogging to the shore I handed the wing to a windsurf lady who was walking her dog and had stopped because she had noticed me struggling with 2 wings and was curious what was going on.  I explained that I hadn't seen the guy who'd lost the wing, and had no idea who it belongs to.  She said she'd walk up to the main parking area at the hatchery and try to find it's owner.  Anyways I've heard a few people on here say to not trust plastic buckles, and after chasing down this runaway wing, I would concur.  With the way this thing was going, I could only imagine how much farther downwind it would have flown before being stopped!

I just know certain protoypes are more powerful for the size than my dlabs and don’t have the stalling issue that I have. Based on other people better than me racing them and trying them all. But you can’t buy a prototype so I’m hoping some of these come out soon and to hear peoples feedback.

I’ve ridden several prototypes with Ken. Ones coming next season, and one just beginning long term durability testing, so probably a very long way out.  I know I’m in the right camp, and I’m not leaving. Duotone forever. The hack brands will get left in the dust eventually.

FYI, Ken is now focused solely on wing design. Kite design is moving to Sky Solbach. They are really getting serious on winging.

Could you please tell him to fix the leading edge handle??  I just got a 4.5m unit.  Really like the wing, but omg that leading edge handle is complete garbage.  It's like nobody actually rode any waves while testing.  I guess if you're just going straight on a wave it's ok, but if you're turning and trying to move the wing around while riding waves the handle doesn't help one bit, just twists and turns with no response from the wing.  The strut handles are so good, it completely blows my mind that they would put such a shitty handle on the leading edge. It's basically just a piece of loose webbing, almost like it was a complete after-thought.

Multnomah falls and surrounding falls and hikes
Go snow skiing up at Timberline, or just take the chair up and watch others ski in july
white water rafting (white river or deschutes)
myriad of hikes nearby
Mtn biking
eat more tacos
golf
There are plenty of things to do when there isn't any wind... just a question of how far do you want to drive
