Gear Talk / Re: SIC Maui Fish 8'8" ...anybody?
« on: September 13, 2014, 02:24:11 PM »
Bad feet here too - not the most agile guy either. I've found my perfect volume on a SIMSUP to be 30% more than my bare-butt weight in kg. E.g. My 230 lbs = 104.5 kg x 1.3 = 136L.  If course the shape of the board is a big factor (it's the L41 SIMSUP ST).

SUP General / Re: when is it too crowded foryou

+1 to Zoo's post. It's too crowded if I'm not the only one...

If you don't mind me asking, why did you choose the carbon rails instead of vector net?  I'm trying to decide what kind of construction to order up and am weighing between the two.

That's how Kirk made it - he pre-made this batch so I grabbed one because it was the size I wanted and no wait time...

Africa - It's a quiver killer for me. I can't believe the range this board is fun in from knee slappers up to head high. I'm still amazed at the hold it has in the bigger stuff - I just don't get that out of control feeling like I did on my S4 (which could have very well been my lack of skill). I also can't get over the stability while standing there and the way this board surfs (high speed and turning ability). I need to work on getting on the tail now - it performed at a different level the few times I really got back there...

SUP Gear Reviews / Newly Acquired / On Order / Re: Simsup S3 mini-review
« on: September 07, 2014, 08:48:35 AM »
Balance_fit - don't neglect to consider the ST in your options; similar to the S3 but with the split tail it surfs much narrower without a loss in stability.

Also, from one guy with "bad feet" to another - stay with a Hydroturf-type pad. Your feet will thank you; I love the grip if an Xtrak but I'd pay for it for days after a long session because it's so thin.

Ditto on a Simmons shape - I'm a big L41 SIMSUP fan. Look for my review on the new SIMSUP ST - short, wide, stable, fast, and a blast to surf. It's definitely good for the conditions you're describing...  But you should try to find one to try first if you can - not everyone is a fan if the Simmons shapes.

SUP General / FCS or Futures
« on: September 06, 2014, 08:23:42 AM »
Too many Futures fins on hand to make a switch to FCS.  I too have broken a few Futures boxes in different boards. Latest board has Futures but with the fin boxes set in higher density foam; so far so good...

Love my L41 SIMSUP ST - search my posts for the review. You're welcome to meet up with me at the Shores if you want to try it out...

Bill - this design is surprisingly stable with the wider tail, fuller nose, no chines rails, and the single concave in the bottom in the center (think catamaran). Don't automatically think you need longer...

Gear Talk / Rail tape width question
« on: September 03, 2014, 05:55:16 AM »
I installed this stuff on my paddle months ago and it's held up great.  I also didn't go with the rail tape and not a scuff in sight. I'm pretty good with not hitting my rails that often but it does happen. I found a local shop that installs the 3M product on vehicles and they sold me a couple feet (didn't want to wait on Amazon nor pay shipping costs).

Installed it just like they do on cars - cleaned my paddle with alcohol and kept wetting the tape/blade/hands with water. There's a video on the 3M site.

Gear Talk / Re: SIMMONS shape in East Coast waves??
« on: September 01, 2014, 07:58:12 PM »
My 7'10" SIMSUP S4 was challenging in steeper powerful waves - much too hard for me to control (likely due to the operator and not the board).   My 8'4" SIMSUP ST is completely different - perfect for me and fun in the small stuff and big stuff (very much in control). I'm in a beach break 95% of the time.

Gear Talk / Re: Boards for 300lb folks?
« on: August 23, 2014, 09:17:14 PM »

I've started surfing the south county Turtle, a very serviceable big volume board that numerous 300 pounders have used to get into the sport, 10x34 but it needed a few adjustments to really keep up with advancements.  Today I was out again with Pete Hughes, who is up around the 300 mark.  We were out at Doheny in head high and over on sets and he rides an older model Angulo surfa at a hair over 10 foot.  I own a sup sports mahalo x wide and i'm pretty sure it could float a 300 pounder., and our one world would have no issues at all.  It's about the surfers stability and ability, what type of break they're riding, and what they want to do on the wave.

Wardog, you know I love you, 4 boards and numerous visits tell my story.  Seriously from a long time customer, your tone on these posts needs some finesse.  All here are SUP supporters, I  wouldn't want negativity to drive a potential sale away from you and the crew at sup sports.  Please reconsider some the the direct attacks, It is considered rather unpolished forum protocol.  I believe I've earned the right to say two things, you're a good guy and the tone of recent postings is not an accurate representation of your stoke.

We'll put SlatchJim.

WD - you've made valuable contributions to the forum but these latest posts are so aggressive that I'm not drawn to your brand; quite the opposite actually. I'm sure your designs are front runners in the industry but each of us has our own preferences which doesn't necessarily mean they're poor choices if they don't happen to be your brand. Just an opinion on my part...

Joe Blair all the way - search my other posts and check his website and/or give him a call. One if the best performance for dollar boards out there IMO.
