Foil SUP / Re: Fly the Wing - Take off the Stabilizer

I think this is an interesting idea for the rear stabilizer. Less drag and more power?

There's been a discussion on the kite form about "riding stabless" for a while: http://www.kiteforum.com/viewtopic.php?f=196&t=2393935&start=10 I've been wanting to try it with the kite and the SUP foil just to see what it would be like but still haven't got around to it.

Nice find,
Are the IWA, Maliko 200, Maliko 280 interchangeable?
i'm confused as to whats interchangeable with Go foils.

They’re interchangeable but only if you buy the set that includes all the wings. The wings are molded to the fuselage at the factory and the screw hole spacing isn’t 100% identical. You also can’t buy wings later, unless you find a used one. Then you’ll have to modify the used wing to fit your fuselage by either sanding the wing or adding more materials to fill the gaps. You may also need to adjust the hole on the wing to fit your fuse. Not a hard process, Alex has a video on youtube on how to do it.

Foil SUP / Re: Starboard Hypernut Inflatable Foil Board
« on: August 13, 2018, 01:21:12 PM »
Both are the standard Deluxe construction from Starboard, they are blue with red tails. I am not 100% sure about 2018, but I don't think any arrived to the USA and I don't think the model is continued for 2019.

Guess that explains why they're nowhere to be found. Wonder why they discontinued it... Thanks for the info!  :D

Foil SUP / Starboard Hypernut Inflatable Foil Board
« on: August 13, 2018, 11:36:09 AM »
Anyone seen the INFLATABLE Hypernut board in person yet? Looks intersting, though I wish it had a windsurf attachment point. Wouldn't mind one to easily throw in the car for the days where I don't want to drag the rigid one. The attachment points in their video look a little strange and there aren't any closeups.

https://youtu.be/Lh_2qeGovyI?t=106

Only pic other than the video I can find.  :-\

Some other inflatable's I know of below. Any I'm missing? I'm sure they're not that great but I'm not exactly doing any SUP-foling either. Seems like I'm just paddling around with a foil attached to the bottom of my board. Might as well do it conveniently.  ;D

F-One has an inflatable sup/wind/foil convertible but it's listed as regular Tuttle, not deep:
http://www.f-onesup.com/Products/MATIRA/Produit/MATIRA-7-11-light-weight

Mantafoils has an inflatable sup/wind/foil convertible:
https://www.mantafoils.com/e-shop/170-Inflatable-SUP-Windfoil-board-p99470283

Found another pic of the Hypernut attachment but it's red. Wonder if this ever made into production?

Foil SUP / Re: Go foil kai, Iwa, M200 kits with 29" mast now available

Is there a limit as to how small (and junky) the waves can be?

Hahaha I think there is. I tried with the Maliko 200 for a total of 2 miles according to the GPS and couldn't get going. The wave in the rear that's breaking is because of a shallow 2' deep sandbar. Though I really suck at this, there just wasn't enough push to get me up.

Foil SUP / Re: Kite into SUP Foil

The foil pretty much guarantees a session, no matter the sport. I'd much rather ride in big waves and kite/wind surf in lots of wind but those days are rare here. I'm usually the only one out now. The old school windsurf guys that dont rig bigger than a 5.5m sail are in perpetual waiting. Even the guys with 18/19m kites barely show up though mostly due to injuries.  :D I can't remember the last time I rigged my 17/18m kites though I rigged the 14m for the first time in over a year a few months back just to remind myself why I don't rig big. It's all about the big foils and that glide nowaday!  ;D

Foil SUP / Re: Kite into SUP Foil
« on: August 08, 2018, 06:34:01 AM »
I started with a kite foil and moved to SUP/wind foil. Though I've still yet to have a successfull SUP-foil ride. I've been kite foling for about four years now and I was wind-foiling on my 3rd tack. Learning to kite foil definitely helped as I knew how to foil and could ride easily once up on the wind-foil.

The problem with SUP-foil for me is that the waves I'm trying to ride have ZERO push. They're barely knee high and it's almost like going from flat paddling to foiling which is impossible for me. Just like I tried to do a running beach start with a foil. LOL The jump up is IMPOSSIBLE unless you're in insane shape.  ;D

I started with a kite LF fun foil, upgraded to the kite Slingshot/Moses carbon foil, picked up a Chinese Takuma clone and fell in love with the big foils for kiting before I even tried it with a SUP/wind. The feeling of big wings while kiting is awesome! Now I'm usually on the GoFoil Iwa/Kai for kiting and try the Maliko200 to fail-SUP-foil.

Once you learn to foil with a kite/SUP/windsurfer the transition to the others will be much easier. At least it was for me from kite to wind foiling. Big wings should make learning a lot easier as well but if the wind picks up it's similary as being overpowered on a big kite, you need to know how to control them.

As far as what you should get to be able to kite and SUP foil is hard to say. I don't know if you'd like the speed of smaller wings or the surf feeling of the big foils. I was once sold on the speed and now all I want is the surf feeling. Slingshot masts/bases/wings are interchangeable, perhaps you should look into that. If money's no object, Moses now has some bigger carbon masts/wings. I've blown way too much money into this to find what I like and I'm still not 100% satisfied.

I’ve drilled couple of holes in the Foilmount adapter plate  with the latest one almost center of the mast to get the foil working really good. Wish I could put the foil further back on the board but I think any holes further forward on the plate would not be good for the plate, mast and boxes.  Used this setup with the Kai, Iwa and Maliko 200 wings.

Oh wow! Yeah, that's definitely far. I was thinking if I went about midway that would be more than plenty. Thanks for the pix!

REALLY don't want to move the straps between changes. I wish the board was tuttle so I could make the foil changes with just two screws. If I start doing all that I might as well just bring the second board (which I do sometimes) but I have to walk back 100 yards to the car. :) That's not an option as I'm way too lazy.

I'll probably pick a board and cut into one. I have a few I don't use. I also have an older 10'10" Bic Jungle Wind SUP that I was thinking of adding this box to.

I've tried to SUP foilsurf a few times with the Takuma board/foil and that was a complete failure. We don't have "waves" where I'm at. Those start two hours east or west. We get wind generated chop and as a dreamer I thought "hey, I could probably do this here!" but ended up just constantly falling off. And if there's wind that creates somewhat of a wave it's just so much easier to kite with the big wings in the knee high slop. It feels soooo awesome!

I've windfoiled with the Maliko and that was pretty cool (1st time, foiling on my 3rd tack) but I'm just too lazy to rig up the windsurf gear these days. I usually get out after work and have a few hours of light, so rigging and cleaning after is not something I want to do. Still waiting to try the Maliko to SUP surf. I did try the Maliko with a paddle in flat water, thinking I could get moving and get on the foil.  ;D LOLx10 ... no

I have the Nalu, Kai, Iwa, Maliko200 and small/big rear and two masts. Bought the Kai set used. Bought the Nalu wing from GoFoil directly (they had one), had to fill it to fit the fuse (wing was way oversized) and drill a hole for the screw. Alex has directions for his other foils on YouTube.

Never tested the floating with the adapter... or without but Gunner on YouTube has. Though I'm guessing if the adapter's attached after the foil is ripped off the board there should be plenty of board still attached to help float as well.  ;D

I thought about moving the straps but I like to bring just the one favorite board; Slingshot Converter (right now) and the foil. Can cover from 6mph to 30+. I love that surfboard for kiting waves but if the wind drops I just slap a foil on the board and go back out or vise versa. The strap position is perfect for just the surfboard but really sucks for the GoFoil. Worked perfectly on the Takuma clone though. And I like two straps more than just the front one.

I was thinking I could try to play with the angle of the foil at the box or plate but not sure. After seeing all your box install pix, I picked up a RideEngine box and was thinking of dropping it into one of my kite-surfboards but that thing's THICK! Not sure any of my boards could handle it so far back and I'm pretty sure whatever board I go with will be destroyed.

Perhaps sharksupper, you really should give up foling! I picked up the GoFoil after you said it was titanium sounding tough. Then I picked up the RideEngine box because your installed look so pretty and "easy". ::) And I was like "how can I go wrong?!" LOL  ;D ;D ;D Just pullin your leg, thanks for all the posts!

42
I was thinking that could happen but luckily the GoFoil floats.  ;D

My issue is when using the GoFoil with a kiteboard I can't get the rear foot into the strap without having crazy lift, even on the Nalu and small rear wings. From a quick glance on the water my foot is just above the rear strap to ride comfortably.

I was wondering if I would need to move the foil as much backwards as I need to move my foot or if there's a different ratio. I'm guessing not?

43
The Naish and Groove adapters I have came with dual sets of holes, and I drilled an extra set on my custom adapter too.  I would just make sure the new hole is not too close to the original ones and not further in than other brands have gone with on the second hole placement relative to the mast location.  If you're worried about strength, leave the holes as is, otherwise countersink.  I got some cool cup washers so I could use the same flat Philips flat head screws on the Groove adapter, which doesn't have countersunk holes.

Sweet! Thanks for the pic! Not sure how far I need to move the foil yet, haven't measured it but the holes definitely wont be close to each other.

44
Any thoughts on the structural integrity of the mount plate if I were to drill extra spacing holes in the GoFoil plate adapter? I'd like to be able to move the foil further back than the spacing allows. I was thinking of something similar to the Slingshot plate mount. I don't think the holes would cause too much issues. Should I countersink it or just leave straight holes for more support?

Foil SUP / Re: Seriously thinking about quitting this sport!
« on: July 18, 2018, 09:17:47 AM »
Wow, you guys are clearly putting more active stress on your stuff than I am. I'm 235# and terribly hard on equipment. My M200 looked like it had been tossed into a chipper--I've hit it on rocks dozens of times. I finally had to do a repair to the trailing edge when I missed with the soft part of a hammer and hit it with the handle. Crap. Sixty years of pounding things and I do that? So now it's been sanded and painted. Other than that my GoFoil has been holding up very well.

But it's clear to me that the engineering of foils needs to be rethought unless a $1400 product is considered disposable.

Do you have the new version without the Starboard logo on the mast or the old one that has it? The one I have with the Starboard logo seems to have a bit of a different finish to it. Though it could have been just the lighting. Just wondering if anything may have changed.
