Hi guys

Intermediate surfer here and I'm after a new board to compliment my longer cruising surf sup. Surfing beach breaks, waist to head+ high.

The surrator has caught my eye- there were loads of threads when it was released 2 years ago but it's gone quiet since.

Was it over rated? A novelty? Or really good?

And how would it compare to a starboard pro? This is the other board im considering :)

Any advice would be much appreciated thanks.

If he likes surfing- take him out in the waves  on a sup. Choose a day when his normal surf board would be less fun- when he's catching 8/10 of the waves he goes for and getting huge fun and long relaxing rides from small swell he will like it.

I'm running a 10'5" laird. Wide nose and tapered tail. So I suppose she will want to ride over where she can.

Thanks so much guys- looking forward to giving this a go tomorrow evening :)

Sup the creek- thanks so much for the photos really informative. I enjoyed your foot placement video (I have been a lurker on here for a while) so if you happen to make a video on getting out back please pop a link on here :)

From what everyone says it sounds like at least 50% of getting out is to assess the situation and pick the right location and moment to do it. I shall try and look out for rips although I never find them that easy to spot tbh. Maybe I'm in too small a swell to spot it most of the time?

I like your idea of using methods which are kind to the body. If it works well for the older SUPer it will be kind to the younger persons joints too.

One thing I'm not quite sure on is do you only employ the two methods you demonstrated in the pictures? Either surf stance over the top in small whitewater or diving underneath whilst pushing the board above?

I think part of my issue is a don't have a tail handle and my leash is too long- its a 10'5 board and my leash is 10'. I want to be able to ride the nose but I should probably run a 9' leash really. That and a tail handle and I can get back on the board more quickly.

Thanks a lot for the advice gentlemen- I need to get out in the mush and practice I think!

Any progress with these stone axe? I need something on the tail and your product looks great.  If not I will go down the noodle handle route.

I'm pretty new to this- but anyone who lifts weights and has performed the "kettlebell swing" may agree with me it feels similar to this movement. Slight bend in the knees, sitting back a little to load up the hamstrings, and a thrust forwards with the hips whilst contracting the glutes/butt muscles.

Wow guys thank you so much I can't believe the number of responses and good advice in such a short period of time- this must be a really active forum.

Thank you to everyone- I'm going to do everything people say

paddle much harder into the wave
take up  surf stance and experiment with going over or under the wave
absorb much more shock with my legs
use the rip
assess the sets coming in and go out during a quiet period
make sure I'm pulling on the paddle as the wave hits me
brace nice and low as I come out of the wave

Phew- what a great forum!

Ok thanks for the advice- although just to be clear it's the whitewater from broken waves I struggle with- not the peaks of unbroken stuff.

But you're dead right come to think of it- half the time it's after I have punched through the wave I fall off- so it's at least partly a balance issue.

Which technique should I practice- that's my next question? :D

Hi guys,

I have been SUPing for about 6 months now and supp surfing for 4 months. I just love it.

I'm fortunate to live in the south west of England where the surf is reasonable, but unfortunately the conditions make getting out back quite tricky.

1) frequent waves- typical time period is 8-10s in "good" surf
2) very frequent onshore winds
3) beach breaks so no deep channels or quiet zones where one can paddle out
4) undefined sets mean there are not many quiet periods to power out to

Add to that im only a (fairly good) beginner and I really struggle to get out in the surf. Typical conditions are waist-head high and the White water just batters me. After getting knocked off the board by some white water, by the time I have pulled the board back (10' leash and the boards usually upside down) the next wave gets me.

From what I have read on here the following techniques work

1) try to duck dive the board with a big push down near the nose of the board.

But I find the wave just hits my body and knocks me off anyway. Going side stance and it's tough!

2) stand on the back and try and ride the board over the wave

I just get knocked for 6 in reasonably big white water, as does the board

3) kick the board up over the whitewater as you fall backwards and hopefully go under the wave

I haven't tried this yet- it seems like it could work? Although the onshore wind may make it dangerous. Plus i still have to swim back to the board, by which time the next wave has hit me.

Anyway- now you have read all my noob excuses :D can someone recommend the most appropriate method I should work on above, or a new one perhaps?!

Any advice would be great thanks :)
