Clay, There’s a bit of a trade off with the Kai type foils being great out on the shoulder but jumpy in real waves. You could detune it but that would add even more drag. It’s easier to make a purpose built Surf Foil dedicated to riding steep faces, bottom turns and tube riding and that’s what the long foils do.
JRandy, yes it’s clear a lot of foil design work has already been done. Theres still a lot of design work to figure out how to comfortably ride a hollow tube with 1/2 the foil out of the wave like this.

Hi SCB, thanks for the thought. I knew people would remember what I’d posted. I got tired of posting the future for the new foil generation but figured you’d all get there eventually. The current popular Kai style foils , hi aspect, thick foiled foils are perfect for out on the shoulder but are very unstable the closer you get to the steep part of a wave.
The breakthrough is that now people see that a thin low aspect foil works and gives exceptional pitch stability making it the easiest foil to ride in normal surfing waves. You can ride a foil only 13 inches wide in the surf which makes it a lot safer. The longer foils are highly suitable for real surfing.
But you’ve heard all this from me last year so let me give you another prediction....
The new long rear foils seen on this thread will prove to be ultra stable and then the front foil will follow suit, eventually reducing in width but become longer. So then you’ll have a long single front foil that does away with the rear foil and fuselage altogether. It will prove to be very stable , safer and easier to make. And you get faster speed from a single foil that’s not adding drag at the rear foil and making you fight to hold it down with front foot pressure. ( as Beasho said )
I’ll drop back in next year and see how it’s going.

I like 3 things about this progression.
It shows that you can foil on a single foil. That you can use a reverse aspect foil. That is a long but not wide foil. You can use a thin Un-foiled foil.
Oddly all 3 things that weren’t accepted a year ago.
There must be someone who’s been foiling on single, long, unfoiled foils before now ?

That’s the thing about the highly foiled and cambered foil, they give excellent lift in low lift situations but as the power of the wave increases it’s not important to look for speed but for control. Better control at speed comes from Less area, a flatter foil, increase the chord for pitch stability by combining front and rear foil into one design. Laird has half the equation because he used the tow in boating foil that’s a foiled but flat aluminium design. You notice that despite his speed he carefully watched his AOA.

As Beasho said speed is the issue and increasingly smaller foils are capable of higher speeds, once you’ve got the speed ,control is the issue and for larger waves it could involve a setup with an overal length of several feet. Even a short mast foil set at nose and tail of the board. Everythings possible with an open mind.

Foils only hum because they don’t know the words.
(Someone had to say it)

Looks like the delay is surrounding the mount. Do you think that the black mount has provided a hot spot and that’s why you didn’t notice it but it’s delammed during the drive home ?

The current foil makers are smartly changing designs so there’s movement there, sadly buying a product is not like a service but should be. I went to a big sup foil evening here a few days ago and apart from the lack of drinks, food, direction or information, there was a clear pecking order of who was friends with whom. Not that I know anything about foils to discuss. The other 40 people in the room were ignored. If you’re selling a product you still have to provide a service, it’s called customer service. I’ve heard it here before, people were going to buy something but decided to go on holiday or spend their money elsewhere. Your competition in selling a foil isn’t the other foil guys but every retailer.. Price is a big deal but customer service in its many forms brings repeat business and new contacts. That’s the advantage local guys have.

Bill, yes the lure to attract Chinese knock offs is the profit margin, almost every week there’s another foil company popping up and due to competition the prices are coming down. As the profit drops only the best will want to continue but the Chinese will corner the low end / entry / casual market. If foils started cheap there wouldn’t be so much competition. The market could be flooded with $99 foils if they went to injection molding. Innovation is underplayed these days.

It had to happen, there were so many new foil companies popping up, like the surfboard and sup market it will be the start of prices falling in competition with retailers importing foils. If the foil market is like the sup market people will vote for cheap. The high end foils will have a market with the pros and competent riders but the other 90% will go to the Chinese. One solution would be to keep innovating so there’s no standard to copy. If design moves forward by the time the copies are made they are out of date. For such a new product that’s not impossible.

That’s excellent work supuk, just brilliant. And the weight gain will make it easier to ride.

Hard to see if it flew or not but there's plenty of planing area. The hardest thing will be getting both foils in the same part of the wave to synch lift.

Sharksupper, that's great news about your progress and how quickly you've dialled in the technique. Stoked for you !

Can I guess that you're trying to get more lift from less wave by increasing the camber of the foil ? The greater the variation of the foil curve the higher it's performance but only in a smaller window of AOA. It'll work fine at a certain speed and AOA but lose lift either side of these parameters.
