SouthEast / Re: New Wreck you can paddle to in South Florida
« on: July 26, 2016, 12:07:26 PM »
Wow, this is great info. Thanks so much for sharing. I've got a few friends in that area so I can't wait for my next visit so we can paddle to this new wreck. You said you marked the map with community edits...Who can do that? Can I do it and if so, how do I do that? Thanks!

Great question! Yes, you can mark the map with community edits, too. Make sure to turn on Community Edits under Menu-Settings. Then just click on the map where you'd like to add an edit and click on the question mark that appears. Click Edit Map then select the category and type of information you'd like to add and save. I googled and found an instructions video here: http://navionics.force.com/kb/articles/en_US/Knowledge_Article/Community-Edits-Video?l=en_US&fs=RelatedArticle

Training, Diet, and Fitness / Re: Fitbit and SUP?
« on: July 13, 2016, 06:54:37 PM »
At the very least, you could do what I do and track your SUP trips with the Navionics app on your phone (in a waterproof floating case lol) and then enter it in as an exercise in your fitbit tracking. The Navionics app gives you distance, average speed, max speed, time elapsed and lots more so it's easy to use this to track your SUP exercising.

SouthEast / New Wreck you can paddle to in South Florida
« on: July 13, 2016, 06:33:04 PM »
There is a new wreck in South Florida that is close enough to shore to paddle to.  In fact, there are a bunch of wrecks all together in this spot but this is a brand new one, just sunk.  I added it to the Navionics chart using the Community Edits feature so you'll see it on your chart too if you update your chart in a few days to a week (however long it takes to get integrated into the charts).  Be sure you've enabled community edits in order to see the wreck.  Navionics also added wrecks to their charts a few months ago so I'm sure this one will be added to the main chart soon anyway but I figured I'd share it with ya'll now.

Technique / Re: Take Off Your Damn Shoes!
« on: July 06, 2016, 06:55:45 PM »
I have similar issues. There's always dangerous things to step on so I try to wear some sort of shoe when I'm in a safe mood. I've tried wearing my (knockoff) Teva's and also my booties. Nothing beats the feel of the naked foot on the board (and not wearing shoes increases my speed) but, then again, having the safety net of a shoe on your foot is priceless. Here I am in my booties. We paddled to an island and as you can see there are lots of rocks and things.

So very sad!  :( Education is definitely the key. And also preparation. If only she had had an appropriate PFD or even just the knowledge that the lake was very small. Little things can make the biggest difference. This situation makes me thankful for Navionics. My sister called me Sunday night. She is a beginner paddler and she went paddling in the marshes in the sounds of NC Sunday and got lost and a storm was rolling in. She started to panic but remembered that she had turned on her Navionics app that I recommended she put on her phone before she went exploring the marshes. I'm so glad she took my advice! Using the app she saw that she wasn't as far from the landing as she was afraid of and she followed her charted route back to the landing before the storms hit (she also used the app to determine when the storms would arrive).

Thanks so much! Appreciate the info.

Flat water or waves?

flat water, park across the street from the blockaide runner or anywhere along the street. Feed the meters. At the end of every cross street it is considered a public access, so she can walk freely to the channel with her board. Paddle laps around harbor island. She'll see many others doing the same.

In Wrightsville Beach

My twin sister is a beginner paddleboarder and she lives in NC. She is interested in the best places to go paddleboarding near Wilmington or Topsail Island. Any suggestions for her? Thanks!

Looking for lakes because they are easy- no current, usually more protected from the wind. I'm building my sis up to more advanced paddling. :)
Yes, I agree, I don't think there are any lakes in FL without alligators but they usually leave people alone.  I live on a lake and see them pretty regularly but we swim in our lake all the time. It's actually very popular for water sports.

SUP General / Favorite Florida lake?

My twin sister is coming to visit me in Florida in a couple of weeks. I took her on her first paddleboarding adventure when she visited me last year and she fell in love with it. Now she wants to visit some lakes in Florida. Fortunately, Navionics just added 44 more Florida lakes to its database so we have so many lakes to choose from we can't decide where to go. She is super excited about using her Navionics mobile app to track our route and distance since she has never used it while paddleboarding but we first have to decide which lakes to visit. What are your favorite lakes to paddleboard?

holy moly!  I thought I was crazy getting on my paddleboard in 32 degree weather (about as cold as it gets in Florida)!  It was my first day with my paddleboard and I just couldn't wait so on the coldest day of the year I went out there...
can't hold a candle to this pic though!!

SUP General / Tracking Your Paddles
« on: February 17, 2016, 07:45:23 PM »
Do you usually track your paddles?  If so, are you looking for speed, distance, or something else, or maybe all of it?
I like to track my paddles so that I know how far I go each month (I try to go a little farther every month) AND for speed (I try to go a little faster on some paddles but sometimes I just want to take it easy).
Here is an example of when I track my paddle in my Navionics app (a  screenshot):

It includes a graph of speed so I can see where in the paddle I sped up and slowed  down.  I can also access statistics of distance, time, average speed, max speed, etc.  Really great tool for training.
