Foil SUP / Re: What do people want in a foil?
« on: June 19, 2020, 10:25:58 AM »
The guys are loving the 1010 for wingfoiling in light winds and also downwind in the breeze.

Here's a friend of mine yesterday: https://www.facebook.com/watch/?v=340137070303116

Anyway, the future is to have a quiver, just like in other sports. You have a few wings (2, 3, 4 or even more) and trade them depending on what you will do that day (SUP, prone, downwind, wing, pump), etc. That's why modular foils sets work great!

P.S. I'm loving the Axis 1000 on the waves! Can really go for steep drops without popping out with no control and I rarely breach (only when I do mistakes). Awesome speed and pumping. I'm not carving on it (still on a learning phase), but I can change direction easily. My quiver right now is the 920, 1020 and 1010, but in the near future it will be the 1000, the 1010 and the 1150.

The situation is very alarming and don't trust your Clown in Chief. Listen to the main scientists and trust the news coming from more mainstream media (and avoid FOX News, Breibarts, etc).

In Portugal, all schools are closed since last week, as well as most shops and people are working from home. Beaches are closed (because on the first day colleges closed the weather was great and thousands went to Carcavelos beach in Lisbon) and surfing, SUP and all nautical activities are forbidden. And physical borders are closed, except for products transport and people living in Portugal (or people that live in Spain and want to get back).

I'm currently on quarantine at home since the 11th with my family and fortunatly I live in a house with a garden and pool (most European live in flats). My bother in law is in induced coma due to a pneumonia provoked by the Convide-19. He is 50 and was not in a risk group, so things are very real and dangerous. My nephew also has the virus (he is 6) but he only had a milf fever and is OK. Me and my family are being monitered by a health delegated, that contact us everyday to know if we are ok and to know our temperature.

The ideia behind everyone staying at home is that the cases are most spread out in time and not all concentrated at the same time putting unberable pressure on the health system. Even with not many cases (compared to other countries) here and only one death at the moment, the system in under immense. Risky tasks or sports should be avoived to prevent accidents and more people going to the hospital.

We are fortunate to have a free health care system in Portugal, and even the private hospitals are cooperating in this situation, but if the situation escalates there's a possibility that the government forces the private hospitals to provide free or cheap health care to the infected. This situation in similar to other European countries.

We must do all that we can to keep the number of infected low adn to do everything we can to keep the risk groups safe. When the Covid-19 initially reached Italy, most people didn't went into social restriction mode and the virus spread rapidly, reaching the elderly very fast. Italian doctors, since they can't save or treat everyone infected, are now following an emergency protocol where people above 80 years are not being treated as well as many others, in order to save others, so this gives you a real perspective of the current situation.

Stay safe, everyone!!!

Bueno, Norte...  Very smooth.  Was that a breach at 1:02?  Also, did not look like much wind...

Jim

Yeah. I think the breach was because he looked at the camera  ;D I think you can see it in the video.

It was quite light, and since it was in the river and there's cities on both sides, it was sometims gusty and other times with virtually no wind. He was making the most out of it even with a 4 meters wing.

My friend Tiago Campos on a wingfoil session this week at Douro River, in Porto, Portugal.

He was using the Ozone WASP 4 meters, Axis Foils 1000 front wing and SIC Mako Foil 6'5 (he's loving the board!).

Alex was unconscious from the wipeout and they found him facing down on the water, and was reanimated on the sand. He was rushed to the hospital and he is now consious and recovering.

It only shows how crazy is Nazaré, they were hit by two massive waves coming from the side, and not from the ocean.

During the WSL event I was making the most of the swell 200 km North foiling some small perfect waves that were breaking inside the Douro River, in Porto.

Did a half a day training course a few years ago with guys that train most surfers in Nazaré (Wave Crushers - Training System) and it was simply amazing how much I improved my breath-holding techniques. Most of the exercices were dynamic and to push you even further, and it's amazing how much anyone can hold their breathe changing only a couple of things and how much of it it's simply mental.
Recommend anyone that goes in the water to do something like, even if you don't surf anything above overhead waves.

I'm really interested in their new Marlin foil/sup board but i can't find any information on their 2020 line other than a catalog with many tempting boards but no release date on ordering or any info really.  I really like my 13'2" redpaddleco board. The battens stiffen it noticeably compared to the our Costco cheapies (Bodyglove Performers, just sold), and with an actual straight fin you can paddle on one side more than 4 times.  ;)

You can fin more info about the Marlin on this link with several photos of the board. I already have one in stock, but full foil range should be available in February: https://supnorte.com/produto/sic-maui-marlin-foil-convertable-78/

Foil SUP / Re: Short standup boards - what’s out there?
« on: December 30, 2019, 08:30:09 AM »
There's a lot of options now. SIC is launching it's new foil board range now. Mark Raaphorst has been making foilboards in Maui for a long time now and some of his designs are going into production now. Amazaing construction: full PVC Sandwich with Carbon and Kevlar with high density reinforcements around all inserts and boxes.
Sizes:
6'0 x 28.5" - 104 liters
6'5 x 27" - 114 liters
7'8 x 29.5" - 127 liters (this one is an all wave sports board, with surf fins boxes and mast insert)

I brought the new 660 wing from a meeting with the Axis guys at Paddleexpo in Germany for big-wave rider Rafael Tapia to use in Nazaré. It's for big wave tow foiling and also for high-performance prone foiling, since you can do really tight carves with it.
Here's some videos from Nazaré sessions:

And since it's already out there I'm posting some top-secret photos from some of the new products  ;D

The new 2020 SIC Marlin Convertable Foil 7'8 looks amazing and can do all those water sports.

I saw the board at Paddleexpo in Germany (and I'm getting one for demo in Portugal soon) and it's looks amazing and super tough: Full PVC Sandwich with Co-Woven Kevlar/Carbon, double slotted Futures fin box tracks for plate mount system, quad fin setup, high density foam reinforcement around all boxes, track and inserts, mast location indicator, foot straps inserts, dual leash plug, deck pad with kick tail.

Specs: 7'8 x 29.5" (127 liters).

Freewing is a grat description of the sport but probably surfwing would be more appealing (and sounds better).

Thanks for sharing. I'm the admin of that FB page (and others). Arnaud (the guy on the video) is a real Portuguese kai Lenny. I remember when I started SUPing he was already ripping hard on small SUP boards, and he is also a great windsurfer and kiter. Since a few years he started foiling and has been paving the way here in Portugal.
He did a wingfoil with some windsurf and kite parts and was flying well. Now he has that new F-One wing.

Good luck to everybody and especially to my friend Miguel Roigé from Barcelona (the guy on the far right).

Keep safe and enjoy!
