Foil SUP / Re: SUP foil spot in Santa Cruz?
« on: November 19, 2019, 12:57:54 PM »
Thanks for the info!

fYI, I have been kite Foiling for quite a while and been SUP surfing for many years as well as kite surfing and windsurfing the coast for 30+ years. I also bought a wing and plan to practice in the bay until I get competent.

I am well aware of the kook factor and have watched tons of videos. Hence the reason why I ask for beginner advice.

For sure will check out north and south of town, san o, San Diego, Bolinas and HMB,  hope to see you around!

Pulled the trigger on an Axis foil SUP.

Any recommendations for beginner spots to learn in the Santa Cruz area?

Would love to meet up also!

Well I got a SUP foil set-up! Paddled around in no swell at Capitola successfully  need some waves!  Anyone know a good beginner SUP foil spot? No kelp!

Would also love to hook-up with other foil surfers in the Santa Cruz area.

I for sure have not been placing both feet on the inside rail or even heavily biasing my back one.

Thanks for tip!

There are only a few lefts here in Nor-cal (that are not beach break) and these only break with a specific swell.

Speed, I am guessing that is the first component I am lacking for a kick out. I have been trying to perform a pivot turn from a standstill. I think it is time to start.

Thanks

Technique / Time to get out and back to line-up

I work, and thus when on the water I milk every bit of each wave to the bitter end. All of the cool people catch a wave and then do a quick turn when the 1st section finishes, remain standing and head back out to the line-up. Any general rules for when to bail?

Also, since I am goofy and live in California I surf back side 92% of the time and find it much harder to turn back out on backside than frontside.

Thanks Pono, I too use wax on my smoother deck pads especially in warm water. I just got back from El Salvador, I forgot to wax my pads, and at the end of my trip my front foot slipped, I did the man splits. Took 2 weeks to heal.

I am happy to be an early adapter and give it a try.

I should mention that I will be using it barefoot all the time.

I read that the RSPro Hex Traction had mixed reviews, but has anyone tried the RSPro Cork Deck Pad?

I, unfortunately, occasionally will ding my fins. I have been just sanding them till smooth which does change the shape a bit and keep as spares. I have not ever gone back and switched them to see if there is an appreciable difference. Does anyone notice a big enough difference?

update: when i wrote this i was just starting to really work on my j stroke. i have been switching between a few paddles now and realize that  the flutter was me, not the paddle, doh! when properly stroking the rip stick works great. i need a longer paddle and just ordered a black project surge. i will use both and be able to have head to head comparisons soon.

I am over 200lbs and have this board. it is not a log to stand on by any means. if you are looking for a board to be lazy on between waves and just cruise this is not the board.  when i bust it out it takes me a few minutes to get used to it especially if there is any side chop. as for agility wow! my smallest board is 29 wide, the 27" makes it turn on a dime and it is fast! it works in small waves, but i prefer shoulder and up for my size, make sure to step on the tail and it just goes where you point it.

bottom line, if you are my size it is not a relaxing cruiser, but rather a high performance board. i use it only 5-10% of the time, my b-line is my daily go to board and if i had the cash i would look at the 10' x 32" or 33".

Gear Talk / Surf Paddle Flutter
« on: January 01, 2019, 02:22:41 PM »
I have been an avid Werner fan starting with the motto and then the Rip Stick when I git serious about SUP Surfing. I have am always working on my stroke. I lent my Rip Stick to my daughter and used my Nitro for the first time in awhile. I realized that when I angle the Rip Stick toward the board it has flutter and is hard to hold in a straight line compared to the Nitro which is more narrow and stiff on edges.

So I am looking around for a Surf Paddle that is short and wide fior quick strokes yet stiffer edges so I can steer board by angling the paddle.

Am looking at the black project surge and Quick Blade.

Anyone else have the same flutter issue? Any paddle recommendations? I am 210lbs and use the 89.

Thanks
