thanks- I pm'd you on kickstarter - and it was SupaSnydes who started this thread who is the little "260" pounder :D 260 isn't impossible by spring but the more I think about it the more I am glad you spoke up - this board needs to be fun, and to lead others into trying them out.

I said 260? lol dreamin'... 284 this morning.

"athletic" 284? lol......

I'll take your advice then.... Please modify my order for the wider board? The price was really close anyway....with luck I'll like it so much I will get another longer, narrower board later.

Fun is a priority, for sure - I have a short lake kayak that I really enjoy working out on, even tho' it's a good 2.5 mph slower at the same effort  than my fiberglass ocean kayak. Plowing around making a wake is good exercise :D

I went for the 12' 6" x6 x30 from the  blueplanetsurf kickstart campaign - couldn't beat the value with the -carbon paddle - it's not as wide/stable as their 10' 6"x 6" x 34" maybe but I figured since I'm 98% going to be in flat, calm lakes the longer board would work out for me.

I was close to trying the isle surfboard but they wouldn't offer shipping Alaska  >:(

I'll report on how I do come spring - maybe I'll be below 280 with my new years resolutions :D Looking forward to the paddleboard workouts and building my core!

Meanwhile, I hope y'all down south are enjoying my Alaska weather this winter :D

Thanks blueplanet :D if there's one thing that makes my blood boil it's "free in the contiguous 48 states" - heck, let me pay the difference even ( there usually ISN'T one) - we even have UPS Ground (sort of ends up being "space available" air-frieght) .

The fact that another "280" liked makes me happy -the trip down the grand canyon is now on my bucket list :D

JimK - looked up Starboard - they go up to frickin' HUGE boards. 40" wide! 16' long! ...don' see any online vendors - not a lot of local shops in Alaska ...:D My selections have to be online, and pretty much 850-ish is my upper limit.

What are proper fin attatchments? I'm thinking that being able to go "short" fin for rivers, long fin for flat-water cruising makes sense  - but what makes a good fin attatchment?

No love for Tower brand? 6" thick is good, 8" thick is better? :D Ok, I know it's not that easy. I can see why 6 is better than 4, but what would be bad about 8? too close to a "log"? Getting too high a Center of Gravity? I can see liking a 14' board - I have a 17' kayak that scoots, I can maintain 6.5mph in that thing - my stubby 10' plastic lake-boat plows along making a huge wake and I typically can't do 4 mph for long - however, it's a great workout :D

Funny - it must be that ISUP is so new - not a lot of online-info about them. Seems like there would be side by side, stitch by stitch comparisons - but I haven't found any.

I could easily stand to wait for Blueplanet to deliver May - May is when I'm out icebreaking my kayak.....I don't have a drysuit so I don't think I will be in a rush to stand up and fall off in ice-water.....

Any images of a "fullsize" model on one of the blue-planet boards? :D

Yeah, you are in the top of the top three choices, as I put in above....... :P

What psi are the your boards rated for?

Advice for the first-timer on a serious budget.

I'm 5'10", 285 - I've been a kayaker since I was 10 (46 now) and just recently saw the Tower 9" footer on Amazon and thought this would be great. Didn't pull the trigger while their deal was under $550 - maybe a good thing, it made me look around more.

I signed up for standupzone just so I could get some advice here. My main rec activity is offroading (hence the muddy online persona :D )

This will not likely ever be surfed ( I live in Alaska ), MIGHT be paddled on saltwater - mostly I hit local lakes and slow-moving rivers.

I'm very tempted by the blueplanet surf, but even the Tower 14' (8inches thick) appeals to me.
I tend to sink my smaller plastic kayak (9'6" or so) pretty deep.......

Budget is a very big concern. My season is about 3 months. Maybe much less if I fall in the water much.

So I'm looking at Islesurfboards.com, both their 10' and 12'6" seem to be among the highest psi-rated boards in their price range - they say it's a sale - is it a real sale? An $1100 board for $600?

Towerpaddleboards.com  - I think the best option for me here is their 14 footer as I said. I saw a pic with a large Samoan/Hawaiian-type guy on it who seemed to be floating well enough :D It has quite a few good reviews on Amazon, but none seem to be from a paddler - all newbies like me.

Blueplanetsurf.com f has their Kickstarter campaign - very tempting, especially if i give up the battery powered air pump and get the carbon paddle - I'm not only heavy but very strong - I am guessing the fiber paddle will be stronger than an aluminum one. Plus I like to support another non-continental-US state :D . Their price, even with kick starter, is a bit higher - it's just hard to justify to the wife the board that costs $100 or $150 more or even $50 more - tho' the 12" Isle board is 800 when you get the fiber paddle.....but it's more of a flatwater board, too.

The only pressure being the winter deals, the kickstarter campaign, all end in a few days. The ice won't be gone for MONTHS.....
