Foil SUP / Re: Mast loosening while up and gliding
« on: January 08, 2019, 10:09:05 AM »
I had the same problem.  I would go back and forth between the screws until I got them as tight as I could.  Flip the board and rock the foil back and forth with one foot on the board.  Usually would crack loose and I would go back and tighten more.  Some other things I tried was silicone lube on the tuttle head and teflon tape on the screws.  At times I would carry a screwdriver with me in the water.  Switched to a track mount, problem solved.  Also gain a few inches on the track mount which was nice.

Sounds like you have the foot position.  Maybe there is less energy in the waves there.  Have you tried riding on the hump of the wave?  I mean on the very top, where you are on the verge of falling off the back?  Even on a powerful wave, if you're in the flats in front of it, you wont get any lift or speed.  You also want the foil high in the water, just below breach.  Even on a tiny wave you can unweight by leaping off the board and get the foil up high.

In retrospect I found the m200 was just masking my shortcomings.  Riding the right size wing makes you chase the wave energy.  If you're going holy crap fast on a knee high wave, you're doing it right.  Can you have someone take a video of you riding?

My 2 cents.  I started foiling at 235 pounds.  Been foiling for 9 months 4-5 times a week and can do so proficiently.  I started on an m200 but knowing what I know now, would have started on a 1600 wing.  Today, I ride a 1600 and wouldn't go back to a 2000 even in small surf.  I don't find it fun to constantly fight the amount of lift from such a 2000 wing.  I'm guessing it's not the answer you want to hear but if I were you I'd try to make your wing work.  A 1600 wing has plenty of lift.  Not sure how far along you are but a couple of things that may help.  First thing to check is your foot position.  Your front foot should be about 27 inches in front of the front tuttle screw.  If you're still not getting enough move the front foot back an inch at a time.  It's surprising how much of a difference moving your foot back 1 inch makes.  Your back foot should be on the back screw.  I use a foot strap in the front and a kick pad in the back to help find the right place.  Check out Sam Pa'e on youtube explaining moving his weight back and forth on the board.  Once you're on the wave shift your weight to your back foot to lift off then trim level and point down the line.  Last, stay high on the wave ride on the peak if you can.  Most of the time when it feels like I'm not getting power, I'm in the flat in front of the wave.  Anyway, hope that helps.

A big part of the issue is that it's not really in SIC control. The way the manufacturer works is that they own the boards until they are sold and they pay SIC a sales commission. It's a good arrangement in that it doesn't require a huge up front investment by SIC, but it doesn't leave them in control.

They weren't in control when they received the boards and loaded them into the container at YTB and did not let anyone know the boards had been sent to oahu?  How do you figure?  Eagerly awaiting your explanation.

one friend of mine told me give respect get respect.  I've adopted this and it usually answers my questions in most situations once you understand there is a line up and who's in the peak.

Still sometimes I get the vibe that other surfers think I'm getting more than my share whether I am or not because I'm on a stand up and more visible.  Then I just move somewhere else.

That all being said I don't think being on a stand up there is any rule that you should concede.  If you've been waiting your turn an you're in the peak, well, it's your turn.  Go and don't kook.  If you make a mistake apologize quick.

An easy example if there are two surfers on one break they would be alternating every other wave.  If there are three every third wave.  If you miss, back of the line.  Unfortunately, It's rarely this simplistic.

Then again there are the "regulars" it's their home turf and you're the visitor.  Then there is a certain expectation to concede which I do.  I wish it were black and white but it's not.  which is why people get mad.

Only 2 months Late not Bad ????  WTF ??

I think two things that SIC could take from this.  Manage expectations.  Should have said late august arrival then the boards would actually be one month early.  At least late july.  I feel bad for the guys counting on these boards for their molokai crossing.

The other biggie is to communicate better and let the customers know what is going on.  Like board is on oahu and on it's way to maui for final inspection.  And board is has been shipped to oahu via YTB on this date here is your bill of laden.

I'm lucky that I've been doing too many other things to worry about the arrival of the board.  Anyway, just my 2 cents.

Karen said they're looking at a wed/thurs drop at ytb for all oahu bound boards.  Hopefully in time for a weekend run.

Has anybody recieved their board from this shipment???

Yes the guys here in Honolulu got theres the ending of last week. The Container left here and was headed to Maui atleast thats what we were told by Wet Feet aina haina.

I think wet feet got their boards for the molokai.  I ordered direct from SIC and haven't heard an arrival from karen.  I heard second hand that the boards would leave maui thursday, friday, or monday.  Hope my board is here next week.

Technique / Re: Paint ding - what do you do?
« on: May 01, 2010, 12:30:28 PM »
depends how big.  If it's small paint chip like half an inch or less, just touch up with automotive or modeling paint.  if it's large, epoxy, spray paint, wet sand, and polish.

If you're considering the c4 grip you can go to a craft store or walmart and get craft foam.  Cut it to size and glue it on with contact cement.

This doesn't help you with your truck but the best that I've seen is my buddy's beater volvo with 58" yakima bars set 5 feet apart.  Easy low loading and 4 boards no problem.

I've got the KSO's and have been using them for a couple of years.  Probably the best there is available.  My only gripe is that sand gets trapped in them and it's a pain to get it out thoroughly.  Other than that, they feel fairly natural, have good grip, and are comfortable.  They're getting pretty messed up now but I'm impressed by how long they've lasted.

The guy at bluegrass recommended getting them bigger but I should have gotten them just right, toes to the ends of the toe pockets.  Sometimes my little toe slips out.  Surftida, the first time getting them on is tricky but after a couple of times it becomes easier.
