Technique / Anyone care to critique?
« on: March 11, 2010, 10:00:25 PM »
I apologize for the quality but i had a friends daughter try to take a few flat water videos of me paddling so I could see myself paddle.  I'd be curious what sorts of suggestions others had to offer.  I see a couple things i think i'm doing wrong for sure but i think i will not state them so i don't bias anyones suggestions.  I'm the first paddler you see and the video pans on me.  Feel free to comment on my buddy as well but you he is only in the video for shorter periods of time.  For what it is worth the board i'm on is not a flat water paddle board (9'0").

Thanks for any tips or suggestions.
Shane

I thought you might look with that topic.

Scenario
I've been occasionally paddling at a local nasty water lake that i don't want to fall into.
Air temp about 50 degrees
Water about 45 degrees i'd guess.

Usually i suit up in  3/2 wetsuit but after a few minutes i take my wetsuit top part off and just let my arms dangle due to overheating.

My question:  How dangerous is that if i fell in?  My thinking is that i'd jump back on my board and put my wetsuit arms back on and it should all be good.  Water at that temperature shouldn't be such a shock you can't climb back on your board or anything?  Seems like i should know the answer to this since i surf the cold oregon coast all the time but i always have a wetsuit on.

Thanks:

PS.  i've been thinking a good solution might be to cut the legs off of an old wetsuit so you have a wetsuit bottom and buy a used dry top for the top half for flat water paddling when your not really planning on getting wet.

Have only flat water paddled it but should have it in some waves by the weekes end.  9'0" x 29" x 4-1/8.

I'm super excited for my second SUP.  Coming off a 10'2" PSH that was custom shaped about 3 years ago now.

SUP General / Padding Your Board for Airline Travel
« on: November 24, 2009, 05:26:14 PM »
Do you guys add extra padding to a slightly oversized Day Bags for airline travel if you don't have a specific bag for airline travel?

What do you do w/ the paddle?  Same bag w/ extra padding?

Thanks for any ideas

Gear Talk / Enough Board? 9'0" x 29 x 4 1/8

Stepping down from a 10'2"  x 28 x 4 and 1/4 with 3 years on it
Looking at a 9'0" x 29 x 4 and 1/8
I Surf sometimes choppy Oregon Coast Waters and weigh 185 dry plus 5/4 wetsuit.

I want a smaller sup but not something so small it has to be glassy to enjoy it.

I thought i'd run it by the zoners before i give the final ok on the dimensions (stamps ninja is the board)

Gear Talk / Vacuum Bagging?

What would the benifits be?  stronger and lighter?
Why wouldn't more manufactures be doing this on custom boards?

Gear Talk / Stamps Ninja or King Paddle Sports Boards

Would love hear peoples feedback if they have ridden either of these.  I have a custom 10'2" PSH board that is about 3 years old now and was looking at these two companies for my next board.  For what it is worth, was thinking of a 9'0 to 9'6" range and weigh about 185

Wind Powered / Carrying Your SUP to the water in the WIND
« on: October 19, 2009, 05:07:35 PM »
How are you guys getting your board to the water in 10 knots or higher wind... say even 20 knots?  I have no hand hold for mine but i can't imagine it is too helpful?

Gear Talk / surf mats
« on: October 05, 2009, 08:05:18 PM »
Just peeled half my grooved mat off and ordered a new mat from hydroturf.  I thought i ordered another grooved one but it is instead it is smooth with brushed finish.  I'm debating returning it for the grooved mat.  Anyone have experience with the brushed finish? It seems that it would not be as good for grip and would add additional weight.

The link to all their SUP traction is below.  If only I had looked a little further down the page, I might have realized the one I actually wanted.

Wind Powered / fins for sailing a 10 foot sup
« on: October 04, 2009, 03:29:58 PM »
Just got a mast track installed in a PSH board and am wondering what the best fin arrangment might be for sailing it.  It is a tri fin set up.  Take the side fins out and sail it as a single or keep them in?  My center fin i think is an 8 inch hawaiian designs.  I do have a wave fin for windsurfing as well but it is a pretty small fin too made for an 8'4" naish wave board.

Whitewater and River SUP / starting a business???
« on: September 30, 2009, 05:37:22 PM »
Any thoughts on a business utilizing SUPing and rivers.
I live in Southern Oregon w/ lots of rivers and it seems the river side of SUPing is probably growing pretty fast right now.  I would like to look into starting a SUP guide business but it does seem that SUPing even class I and II rapids requires significantly more skill than, say renting a tahiti and going down the river.  Since most of my background is in ocean sports, I was thinking of trying to tag along next summer w/ a raft company already up and running and see what i can learn from that.  It may be a good indicator if people are even that interested in trying it out while in flat water sections, etc.

Anyhow, I obviously only have some very vague ideas and was wondering what insight others may have.

Wind Powered / starboard or naish owners - where is the mast inserts?
« on: September 27, 2009, 06:29:59 PM »
I'm getting ready to make a final decision as to where my mast box is going to be installed on my 10'2" SUP.  On my friends advice, I think I'm going to aim for the center of the box about 4" forward of center.  However, I was hoping to get some insght from Starboard or Naish owners on how far forward of center their mast inserts are located.  Thanks in advance if anyone has the time to measure this.
