SUP General / A PERFECT PADDLING WEEKEND....MANATEE/CLEAR WATER (video)!!!
« on: February 14, 2013, 07:54:57 AM »
About 5 years ago a small group of Surf SUPers here in Northeast Florida started an email list to coordinated surfing together. As time went by, more and more people asked to be added to the list and we now have over 100 names, SUPers of all stripes... Surf SUPers, flatwater paddlers, sup fishermen...(amazing how the sport has grown!!)  Last weekend there was no surf so a group of about 16 of us went on a FLATWATER SUP ADVENTURE to CRYSTAL RIVER and RAINBOW SPRINGS on the Gulf coast of Central Florida....It was just an AMAZING EXPERIENCE...captured on video by Ed and Gigi Dacanay..(two extremely talented members of our group)..THE VIDEO SAYS IT ALL......ENJOY!!!!

SUP General / Cool Sup Stuff from Santa!!!
« on: December 29, 2012, 06:49:25 AM »
Now that Christmas has come just wondering if anyone got some cool "SUP STUFF" from Santa??? I got a couple of neat things....

a waterproof case for my I-phone that should be great for flatwater paddling excursions (although I don't think I'll try it out in the ocean when surfing) and

a Board Fisher Safari collapsible fishing box that attaches to the deck of a SUP and can hold your paddle, pole, gear, fish, etc....Can't wait to try that with some backwater fishing...

I'm sure some of you out there were "good" last year and received a visit from Santa!!! So what did you get?..new board..paddle...Cool Sup gear... sup clothing...new wetsuit...surf trip...etc?????...and what do you have to say about it???

« on: October 05, 2012, 02:50:21 PM »
Just got back from a week long trip visiting my daughter who lives in Encinitus. Always a fun trip...mixing good family times and good SoCal Suping!!  Picked up a nice little surf/sup from Tom English of Aloha Paddle (he has great rental equipment!)  Got a couple of really fun days surfing at Dogpatch (a little crowded with all the folks in for the BOP)....Took my daughter, her husband and the wifey and had a great morning of flatwater paddling at LaJolla cove....and got to go up to Doheny and catch some of the BATTLE OF THE PADDLE!! Also took in a Jason Mraz concert one night...All in all a GREAT TRIP!!!...I highly recommend SoCal for a destination if you want to go a place with lots of things to do, plus opportunities for getting in some quality SUPin!!!  Now back home in Fla..and it looks like we'll have a fun little swell this weekend......AAhhh!!..... Life is GOOD!!! TDE

Amelia Paddle 9-15-2012

Here is a fun video by Ed Dacanay of a SUP paddle we did this past Saturday. The location is Northeast Florida. The launch site is the Kayak Amelia outpost and the paddle is on the backside of Little Talbot Island. This was a down-wind, down current paddle...(definitely need to plan and time it right!!)..Depending on the track you take its 3-4 1/2 miles and is great for all skill levels...As the video shows..A BEAUTIFUL PLACE...a WONDERFUL PADDLE... and A GREAT TIME WAS HAD BY ALL......TDE

SUP General / Alligators....
« on: September 15, 2012, 03:12:42 PM »
We have a wonderful place up here in Northeast Florida with a beautiful area to flatwater paddle (Guana River State Park). It also happens to be a very popular place for ALLIGATORS.... Any of you other southeastern Paddlers have experience paddling with alligators??...What are real risks of paddling in their territory???  Anyone aware of a gator attacking a SUPer??  TDE

SUP General / Good Ending to Bad Situation!!!
« on: July 10, 2012, 12:28:44 PM »
In May I had two SUP's stolen out of my garage (Bad Situation!!)....I did a post about the theft here and also sent out a message to our local SUP email group about the stolen boards. A number of the local SUP shops are on our email group and this past Saturday one of them got a call from a nearby pawn shop seeking info on the value of a board that a customer was attempting to pawn. Once he heard the description of the board the SUP Shop owner realized it was one of my stolen boards. He told the pawn shop owner that the board was "hot" and to call the police. By the time he got the message to me the police were already at the pawn shop. (THE GOOD NEWS).....We verified the board was mine. Further investigation by the police revealed that the rest of my stuff was still at the home of the guy who tried to pawn the board....CRIMINAL CHARGES ARE NOW PENDING!!!   WWWWWhhhooooeee!!!!!!!
Just goes to prove there is still some JUSTICE IN THIS WORLD!!

PS. Thanks to Rob Autrey at Ocean Extreme Sports for making the calls!!

SUP General / SUP Info sheet...
« on: July 02, 2012, 01:27:58 PM »
Here in North Florida we have had a steadily growing Surf Sup Community for the last 4-5 years. We have also been fortunate and had a good relationship with the traditional surf community. This year SUP has really EXPLODED!! This is creating increased problems and tensions in the water as we are seeing more and more SUPer's trying to surf....many of whom have NO PRIOR EXPERIENCE with traditional surfing or other ocean water sports. They have no knowledge of surfing etiquette and often no awareness of water safety.

A lot of the problem stems from the fact that as more and more retailers recognize SUP is profitable, they are pushing the sport and selling boards and gear to anyone coming into the store....To my knowledge very few if any of these retailers provide significant information with regard to water safety and none provide information regarding surf etiquette....the result is chaos, danger and growing animosity towards our sport in the water!!!

Question, Has anyone out there (particularly you SUP retailers, dealers or manufacturers) developed a SUP INFO SHEET that could be given to  customers when they purchase Standup Paddle Boards??  This could at least be used to inform the buying public of recommended Do's and Don'ts for out sport.  If so could you post what you are using here??

My thought is that if a standard information sheet could be created and provided to all new purchasers of SUP's we might help eliminate some of the problems we are experiencing... I know that I for one would be happy to provide free copies of the Info Sheet to all retailers who would be willing to hand them out......

Thoughts???

Travel, Trips, Destinations / CABO....
« on: June 11, 2012, 09:59:26 AM »
Just got back from a week trip to CABO...AWESOME place for SUP!!! Stayed in San Jose Del Cabo and had a solid south swell running all week. East Cape offers incredible breaks for SUP, uncrowded and a good vibe. Tourism seems down so had a great deal on 1 bedroom condo on the golf course ($550 for the week)....food was great...weather still not too hot....people very friendly...and its just a beautiful place to go....

And best of all....check out SUP MEXICO across from Old Man's....very good selection of rental boards and equipment so no hassle taking equipment down there...I got a 9'6 PSH WAA (which I have in my quiver at home)...plus they had a number of nice looking Hobies.

All in all probably the most user friendly SUP trip I know of!!!...With access to some world class surf!!!  TDE

Gear Talk / Small, durable, waterproof Camera at a good price???
« on: April 27, 2012, 02:39:04 PM »
I'm sure this has been discussed before but I would love to hear recommendations for a relatively inexpensive waterproof camera that can be used on flatwater paddles or in small surf...Doesn't need to be to fancy, just something simple that takes good pictures and can occasionally get wet.... :-\ TDE

Gear Talk / Good IDEA!!!
« on: January 25, 2012, 05:59:14 PM »
I love good ideas! I have two PSH boards I bought in Hawaii a couple of years back. Both are great boards, in good shape and I intend to keep them. The negative has been that neither of the boards came with a carry handle, which at times has been a real pain. Along comes LIFTSUPs. I just had one put in each of the boards and all I can say is great idea, great product and great improvement for each board. Now, they are super easy to carry  and jeez, I may even be able to get my wife to help carry the the one she uses....(I wish!!)....If you have an older board without a handle or a newer board with one of the shallow handle that is difficult to use, these things are definitely worth checking out...here's to a good idea....and a very clever name...TDE

SUP General / Surf Expo 2012
« on: January 15, 2012, 03:43:13 PM »
Went over to Orlando yesterday to check out the Surf Expo. I'm interested in what others who attended thought.

The most striking thing for me WAS HOW MUCH THE SUP MARKET HAS GROWN!!  There was an amazing number of board manufacturers (many of whom I have not heard of), an amazing number of different styles of boards (entry level, cruising, racing, high performance surf SUPs, inflatables, fishing SUP's, whitewater SUPS, etc,) ),....lot's of different paddles to chose from..., lots of accessories....it just went on and on. No doubt that there is a HUGE MARKET focus is on SUP.

Personally, I'm really most interested in the surfing aspect of the sport. As far as that was concerned I didn't see anything that was so new that it "wowed" me.  But I must say, unlike years past, there are a lot of really nice boards on the market to chose from.

What did impress me was the huge number of Race Boards (and to a lesser extent high performance "Cruisers")that were there. Some absolutely beautiful equipment!!!!  I just wonder if that segment of the market is large enough to accommodate all the new boards and designs that are coming out?

Still, it was a really GREAT SHOW....Everytime I go I feel like a KID IN THE CANDY STORE!!!

As noted, I'd love to hear comments from other Zoners who attended
