Lots of places to SUP surf around Cabo, I do it every day.   A car rental is a must.  As long as you are respectful, you will be fine. That means, safety first, control of your board, no taking off on the inside when someone else is on the wave and letting a lot of waves go by.   Still lots of empty waves going east past San Jose.  Plenty of waves around Cerritos on the Pacific.   The beach break just south of the point works really well and doesn't have a lot of people. Lots, you don't need to surf with the pack.   Stay away from Zippers and Shipwrecks.

You will have a blast!

I would fill the voids with foam or GG.  I personally cut new foam in glue iut in with GG. sand the new foam to shape,  then just re-glass the bottom with 2-6oz cloth n wrap the rails.  I would forget about trying to make it pretty, and just make it so it surfs again.  I wouldnt spakle it.  Just let the epxoy fill in the small voids so you get a good bond.

It looks to me like they underglassed the board, n they thought Verctornet would make it strong enough.

Your board will be a bit heavier, but its marginal.

Time n frustration, not worth the effort.  But getting it surfing again is.

I had a board I added too much nose rocker on and addded bondo to smooth out the curve.  Added weight n looked ugly and the boatrd surfed well.

I had to redo a board simialr to yours and everyone here suggested I fix it, and getting it surfing again.  I added a little extra tail rocker, glassed it ( ugly), but wow, did that board surf great.

Didnt mean to offend, because all on this board are on the same page. Its all about fun and enjoying the ocean.

I have been off working/fishing so no replies.

Pinchie is many things in Mexico. Anywhere from endearing to malice.

Gringo is anyone from the north, including me.

I always say Pinche Gringo to my buds when I speak about myself.  Este Pinche Gringo esta Cansado, or esta Pinche Gringo esta viejo. Its not as bad as it sounds, but true translation would make it sound horrible.  Gringo is not white.  Its Gringo, whatever color.  I dont look at Gringo to be derogative.

Most guys that come down are so cool its crazy.  Great guys to surf and hang with, but the few haters that come down, I just give them my thoughts.  The same as most of you.

I am very respectful in n out of the water, but when you get haters bringing and spreading thier hate down here, I just cant believe it.

Anyway, I have gone too far again, and stuck my foot in my mouth.

I had a super seesion at 9 palms yesterday.  It was kind of crowded all day, but it slacked off around 5 pm and everyone got off the water. I surfed it till dark, all by myself.  Head high, glassy and peeling down the line.

Spanish for surfers in the lineup

Callate pinche Gringo Mogroso, Y deje mi en paz.

or

Yete la chingada, y regarsar de du pinche piaz.

or sometimes, its just

Deje me en paz, es una preciosa dia, pero eres siego con tu odio y no puedes ver la.

There is a million of em.  Just splurt pout what I feel at the time.

Amazes me how much hate there is in the lineup...

Starting to see more down here as the Cali Crowd is flooding the lineups.  They paved the road to the east cape and 9 palms, so its getting worse all the time. My east cape is getting to be a thing of the past.  People on every point that used to be empty.

When someone is nasty I just smile and ignore.  If they contnue, I just speak spanish to them and that usually does it.

Older gals n attitudes, I get that at Scorpion Bay.  I just learned not to give a shit if they like you or not.  Just because they moved there they seem to think they have an entitlement beause the bought some land n became instant locals...

I just let them know in spanish, that they are foreigners and they are guests here, and they need to start acting like it.  Most of the time, they just look at me an wonder what the heck did he just say?  The ones that speak Spanish usually get it.

I cant even image the crap that goes on in the lineup in Cali.

The Shape Shack / Re: rippled hot coat on rails
« on: December 09, 2016, 03:03:05 AM »
I dont habve picures.  I just finished a 7.8 prone board and was tired of the ecess sanding of the rails.  Its a killer for me..

I bet its slumping from being too thick.  I use Apex epxoy and wonder if its a thicker epoxy.  Maybe need to warm it a bit before applying?  I dont think its contaminatin.  I have had plenty fo that beofre and know exactly whay it looks like.

I do a chaeter coat, then when that starts to gel up, I spread out my epoxy with a wide brush.  Go lenghtwise, then sideways, then lenghtwise and then the rails and walk away.

I bet I have too much epoxy on the board or its too thick.

I have this problem on every board I have made.

The hotcoat looks good on the bottom and top, but the rails are heavily rippled.  I do the cheater coat before the hotcoat.  I use just barley enough epoxy to cover the bottom n top, but the rails are a bitch to sand.

I thought I might be getting too thick a hotcoat, but I dont think thats the case..it looks like valleys n rivers of hotcoat on the rails.   I use gloves when sanding the board and getting it ready for the hotcoat.

Anyone else has this problem?

The Shape Shack / Re: stringer for 10' board
« on: November 04, 2016, 04:53:21 AM »
Okay, I have some 17" wide 1/32 Bamboo that I can sandwich on, and years ago, I did a 1/16th ply sandwich on prone board.

Maybe I will go that route...

I dont have PVC or Core Cork here in Mexico.

Yea, I have beaten the subject to death.

I will put in the stringer and go from there.

I was wondering if the Home Depot pink foam glassed on each side, wouyld have made a good stringer.

I put the SUP on hold and I am building my 7.6 prone board.  I made it 25" wide and 3" thick.  Its just an expierement.. Then I will build my SUP next week.

Thanks.

The Shape Shack / stringer for 10' board
« on: October 31, 2016, 05:43:36 AM »
so its time again to build another board.  I feel the need to be creative again but hate the sanding part of a build.. I don't mind the glassing..

My two 10' boards are dust... I loved them both.. My first build, I built without a stringer... It was a great board but had a short life... I broke it on an overhead day.

I over built the next one with a 1/2 ply stringer.. Man, its super heavy now..  Just a pain to take anywhere.

My foam is 1 lb.  All I can get here in Mexico.  So gotta figure out what kind of stringer I am gonna put in it..

I was thinking of a pink 1" Home Depot foam, just might be enough to add some rigidity to the board... Or maybe glass the HD foam with 4oz on each side.  then glue the board together.

Or router the board from the middle out, both sides,  say 2"or 2 1/2  deep.  The put the 1" Home Depot foam in with glass on each side..

Or add a 1/4 inch stringer.

My glassing is always a bit heavy.. I glass 2- 6 oz on the bottom and 3- 6oz on the top..

I dont have any carbon here on me and really dont want to wait the 2 or 3 weeks to get it...

I am also building a 7.6 tomo prone board for the spots that have the surf crowd.. No stringer needed there..

My 8.6 Tomo build is without a stringer and had been surfed the last 3 years, in small to serious waves.  Same build without a stringer.  No problems with the board.

Any and all thoughts appreciated.

Stoneaxe, were cut from the same cloth.  I haven't had that haze in years, but its hiding just waiting to come out..  I took Aikido most of my life to control it.  I am getting older now and wonder how effective I would be in a actual battle... I have taken punches and like Darryn actual relish them..  I hate bullies and wont put up with them.

I live in Mexico, so if you throw a punch, the law doesn't care, except to pull up a chair n watch, and there is no suing here, sue happy lawyers can stay up in the US and continue to ruin things..

Man, thats a hard one. I have BTDT..  I hate it when goons get in your space and ruin a good vibe  Your not gonna really win either way, unless this guy loses interest in you... The guy isn't right in the head.

Taking pictures, etc, is bullshit high school physic 101. Standing in front of you? Big deal... It sounds like to me the guy is low IQ and scared himself and is using his voice and bulk to try to intimidate and frighten you.  Now, is he willing to fight you? Cross the line and damage you or your car, then it turns into a different game.

Confrontation, think about this before action. Are you advanced in fighting?  Taken any boxing or martial arts classes for over 5 to 10 years? Ever been in a fight with a big guy.  If not, dont go up against this guy... If you do go up against this guy, its important to not telegraph your actions and swing first and hard in a soft place. Not the jaw or face, way too much bone.  Remember,  everyone is a badass until they get hit really hard. BTW  Keep hitting until he is either out or crying.

If you go to the Police, he will just think your a scared p**sy and keep up the shit.

How about hiring a badass and have him give the guy a visit.  Or have the badass hang out with you at the parking lot and when the guy shows up have your Amigo(s) confront him.  Throw some shit his way.   Just something to make him think twice if he starts something with you.  Thing is, you gotta get a real badass.

You are F**cked if you do something or if you do nothing.  Leaving things in the hands of the police, is not the best option.  Maybe its the legal one, but if you go that route, just take pictures of him taking pictures of you, file reports every time he trys to intimidate you and create a proper paper trail, then one day you can get a restraining order and put him in jail.  Keep this in mind, if someone put me in jail or called the cops on me, I would want some real payback when I got out.

This is my favorite option... If you aren't willing to hit this head on, and want peace and fun, go surf somewhere else, until he moves on or forgets about you...Or just give him my  " hippie vibe" and keep surfing there, paddle up and ask him his name, and say, good day mate, and see how far that gets you.  Ot maybe have doughnuts and coffee waiting for both of you at the parking lot and try to bond or get some common ground.  WTF do I know.

I have had two occasions like yours.

Years ago, I knocked a bully out on the beach. He was famous for sucker punching guys out on the water. Just paddle up to you and wham, bloody mouth or nose.  He and his buddies would laugh.  He tried to do the same to me, and we took it to the beach.  I got in a lucky punch, he went down right away and stayed on the sand..  I got shit from his buddies, backed off and hardly ever surfed that spot again.  Funny thing is, I saw the guy after 20 years and he was at the same ole game, giving shit to other surfers, then he recognized me and  paddled away and kept his distance.  Man I loved that!

The other time the guy was a true psycho, I mean tats, drugs, muscle, no brains and nothing to lose. I knew there was no winning that war.  I sat on the beach, said hello when he passed by and surfed another spot for about a month.. Went back to the spot later on and lucky for me, I have never seen him again.

Long winded nothin,  glad I am not in your shoes... I have empty waves and really good guys for the most part.

I will never SUP without it again... After what I have been through, I think anyone who SUS should use them.

Beasho- Your a wildman... I almost drowned a few times surfing, but never with my Gooru on.

I am 54 with a beautiful wife, and two young girls in high school so my wild man days are just about over... Like most of you I am a adrenaline Junky, but gotta hang around for the long run if its in the cards.. My Gooru is one of my hedges.

GFN- Awesome Info.. I will PM you after fishing today.

SUP General / Gooru vest saved me today
« on: March 16, 2016, 08:34:43 PM »
I had a day off and went to surf 9 palms.. head high fun stuff with a few bigger sets... The low tide came and I was messing around inside on smaller waves... A set came in and cleaned me out.. The first wave, I was dangerously close to the rocks, the next 6 waves, threw me into and on top of the lava rocks, and rolled and slammed me silly. Wave after wave.

I got into the beach and saw I had a lot of Sea urchins in my feet and elbows, blood from scratches running everywhere..Except that is on my chest and back.  The Gooru took the impact of the jagged rocks great, I got some sore ribs and back, but it saved me some big time anguish.. The vest got a few tears, but not bad.  I will never surf without it...
