The Shape Shack / Re: Falcon Foil

That is a beautiful piece of work. I got out of foiling a couple of years ago when I realized I didn’t have the cash to continue so I have no idea about the tech, but it looks stunning and I admire the skill it took to design and create it. I hope it goes well for you on the swim missile.

Just chiming in again to be clear that I quite like the way the New Deals surf. I only sold mine because I moved and could no longer store a 10’ board. Unfortunately, that also coincided with supply chain issues during Covid and I was unable to get a 9’x28” to replace it. I look forward to hearing your thoughts on the 26” wide if you get a chance to try it.

I haven’t paddled a 9’x26” New Deal, but I had a 10’x27” for a few years and if I had to guess I would say the 9’x26” is only going to move the stability category from the “it’s  hell,” of your previous 95ltr. experience up to “slightly less hellish😁.”  New Deals are great boards, but they have very pulled in tails and a more pulled in nose than most longboard shapes so you don’t get as much of a bump up in stability as you would from something like a Sunova revolution. I would also see if you can demo it in the surf. I am close to your size(6’2”, 190) and I can paddle a 95ltr regular surf shape for an hour in flat water, even in wind, without falling, but I take a lot more of a beating in a crossed up beach break, or some place with a lot of side shore sweep so I don’t know how much a pool is going to tell you. Having said that, I hope it works out for you, they are cool boards.

Dusk Patrol,
Let us know how the 9x26 goes for you prone. I have been thinking about doing that for a couple of years, but naturally never followed through. Seems like it would be nice to have a 9footer that you could knee paddle.

SUP General / Re: SUP Surf Volume and Width - how much is too much

It is unfortunate that most brands don’t give you surface area. I find it to be a very useful metric when comparing boards, especially if they very different shapes. Firewire used to have an app that listed it for all their models in all sizes and it really helped when trying to figure out what board size would work for you. Gong is the only sup company that I know of that publishes this information currently.

Not to complicate your decision making, but I saw last week that NSP is making a new longboard model; the High Roller. I believe it comes in 9’x28”x125ltrs. Not a quad, but might be worth checking out since you liked the Super X.

I hope it goes well for you. I actually like quads on most sups and my prone boards. However, the only guy I have talked to who has surfed that board(a 9’0”) told me he had a real problem finding find that would work. I think the only ones he liked were the really big HI quads. That is second hand info and your experience may be very different. I will be curious what you think of it as it is a board I have thought about getting.

I have not seen one in the flesh, but I have been told that the new Kalama sups come with a center longboard box as well as the quad boxes. If I were getting that shape I would want the option  to run it as a 2+1 or with a big single.

Almost all of the cheap windsurfers you see for sale are usually quite old, this means that they are very narrow, foiled out tail, volume way forward, longish and heavy.I would get your DW specific board as soon as you can and spend your time practicing with that.

Indian beach is in Ecola St. Park just north of Canon Beach.

Tip for Manzanita is, sadly, come back in the summer when smaller swell and northwesterlies make it a better bet for winging.

Your best shot if the wind blows is probably the fort Stevens recommendation.

General Discussion / Re: Does such a board exist?

I get why you would be nervous about a big step down and you should go with your instincts. I just wanted to voice the notion that short sups can not only offer more of a certain kind of performance in small messy waves but that they are also often easier to surf. In my experience in side on conditions the swell devolves into a series of short peaks where the cross chop intersects with the swell. In order to take advantage of the conditions you have to take off right at one of those peaks and then you have a split second or two of steep shoulder. The shorter your board is the easier it is to step back on the tail and get in a few whacks before the whole thing dribbles out. The problem, of course, is that the other part of supping, the standing around waiting for waves in choppy conditions is harder on a small board. I have had a lot of success with more mid length boards(8’5”ish) as well, but they are a little more technical to surf as you need to have better footwork to get back fast after the takeoff. Sometimes this is a difficult move when you are learning(you see posts about people having trouble getting back to the kicker). If you can’t step back to the tail it can be hard to turn the board sharply enough to fit turns into the small amount of space you have ion what I imagine to be your conditions. Mid lengths do have the advantage of much better fore and aft stability while waiting for waves. It would be pretty informative to get to try your friends hypernut. I am curious how the 7’10” would go for you as all my experience is with smaller sizes. Let me know if you get a chance to demo it.

I have had to surf a lot of crappy messed up surf while on the road and I think your best option is to  jump down to a short board. Boards in the 7’6” range work really well in that kind of surf and they can be accessible to newer riders if they are pretty wide. It helps a lot if you have prone shortboard surfing experience so that you know how to position for takeoffs and have a feel for getting back on the tailblock and compressing in your turns. But if you don’t you just have to have some commitment and be willing to pay dues for a week or two.
The only board on your list I have experience with is the hypernut. I think a 7’10” could work for you, but don’t go any bigger. Those boards need to be surfed as small as you can manage. They are very stable in chop and surf really well if get your foot back on the tailblock. It will be much slower paddling out the back and you will need to relearn how to takeoff. No more paddling in canoe style like on your current board. You have to position yourself where the wave is standing up more and learn to take a couple quick strokes and drive the board down the face with your front foot. They actually get into waves pretty easy, it is just a very different technique. I don’t think you necessarily need a “tomo” style board, just something wide for stability and short and light to snap around quickly in small waves. Avoid narrow noses and tails and try not to go over 8’ and get something as light as possible. Remember that in those kinds of waves you are moving slowly so flatter rocker and even the much maligned fuller rail can be your friend. Don’t be afraid to go as wide as 32” due to your conditions. I think you will have a lot more fun if you go shorter but wider. Those kinds of boards are not very popular at the moment,  but I have always found them to be easy to surf and very fun in crappy conditions.

Look, I get not being sure what a board is worth. Many people on this forum write in asking other members if they should buy a board on CL for a certain price. That is fine. Assuming  risk by buying ia board and then turning around and selling it is even okay. You are getting paid for having assumed the risk. But, advertising and arranging to sell someone a board you don’t own is fraud. You need to take that ad down until you actually own that board.

Just so you guys know. Dan_GiddyUp does not own that Infinity New Deal. I do. That photo and the copy were taken from a craigslist ad I posted in Denver a couple of days ago. I know from a kayaking friend in the Bay Area that there have been scams where people list kayaks, get a buyer and then steal them. I am not saying that Dan is going to steal my board, but at a minimum he does seem to be planning to sell it to one of you  before buying it from me. That may not be illegal, but it is really not cool. Again, he does not own this board and I would be careful about anything he posts for sale in the future.

Gear Talk / Re: Different board for different conditions?
« on: March 01, 2021, 10:27:38 AM »
I agree with Creek, your board looks great. Since you seem to like it in good conditions I would contact the shaper and ask him what tweaks he would recommend to improve performance in the conditions you are having trouble with. Just be really specific about paddling/balance problems vs. actual performance on the wave. I am guessing you will have to choose whether you want to prioritize smaller flat Florida waves or big windy conditions at home, but a slightly wider version of your board with a few mods might be the answer for at least some of the conditions you describe.
