On the boat we call it "checking the prop".

On the SUP we call it "checking the fins".

Very cool!!!

If you want a real treat...slip under the surface next time. I have been doing a ton of scuba diving lately, and this past weekend took the opportunity to go into their world on both scuba and breath holding.

As amazing as they are above water, they are even better under.

January has been an amazing month for seeing those whales.

photo-bombed by a rainbow..

I move to lock this thread down at this point in time. Is there really anything else that can be added?

Anyone care to second the motion?

SUP General / Re: Is this the Shark that bit the swimmer?
« on: July 08, 2014, 03:03:27 PM »
So we see that shark, and a few others on a very regular basis out there. I was one of the guys in the video at the 2:15 point in that video, and on that day I probably paddled or surfed over that shark 10 times. It didn't seem to care at all, and when it did show any response to any of us, it was to get out of our way and swim away from us. If the fish looks big, keep in mind that some of the SUPs in that video are sub-7'.

The bite that happened the other day is very unfortunate for all involved (swimmer and the shark, and for all the kids who are afraid to swim there now). It was a provoked bite and apparently done in response to being flogged on the end of some assholes fishing line for 40+ minutes.

The city has apparently extended the fishing ban though at least August/September at this point, and the residents of the city are fighting for a permanent ban.

Buy Blue Lizard (from Australia) and get out on the water.

US FDA requires only 80 minutes in standing water to get the "waterproof" designation.

The Aussie FDA (whatever they are called) requires 240 minutes in a whirlpool to get the "waterproof" designation.

Bottom line is that any US FDA based stamp of waterproofiness promises that your sun protection washes off after a relatively few dunks in the water.

We are seeing them on a near daily basis in Manhattan Beach. It's almost to the point that the sightings are not even mentioned any more.

Am I happy they are out there? No.
Would I rather the sharks go elsewhere? Sure.
Would I miss a day of SUS because of them? No way.

Gear Talk / Re: Floating hats

If you are using a trucker style hat, just add some thin lining of foam in there. Under the bill works, as would a few small pieces inside the cap  itself. Doesn't take much to get those hats to float, at least long enough for you to grab it.

(Stolen from the seabreeze forum...)

Let's face it, often the hot ones come with baggage.

I assume that's her mother-in-law.

You know Jerry Garcia was missing a good amount of his middle finger...seems to have not hindered him in any way.

Hope you have a speedy recovery.

In case anyone is looking for a Hero 3 Black Surf Edition, Amazon is selling them for $240 until midnight west coast time (US).

Linter, not sure if you are looking for a hat to provide shade on your face, or strictly to provide cover for your scalp, but if the latter, try a neoprene beanie hat.

There are several on the market, and they seem to stay on pretty well (much better than a cap would). Not saying it won't fall off, but it does stay on better than any cap. Most of these offer a grommet for a lanyard too.

Search "wetsuit beanie" on Google, and you will find many options. Hyperflex makes a good one.

SUP General / Re: Do I really need to wear a wetsuit?
« on: November 18, 2013, 03:59:08 PM »
Would you not wear a helmet on a motorcycle just because there were no other vehicles on the road with you?

Hitting the ground can kill you as easily as hitting a car.

Same rules should apply in or around cold water.

You could easily fall and hit your head on your board, pass out just long enough to fall into the water. The wetsuit could give you the needed buoyancy and warmth to make the difference between living or not.

Gear Talk / Re: anyone recording 60fps video?
« on: November 10, 2013, 04:07:58 PM »
Correct me if I'm wrong, but I keep hearing that Final Cut is being ditched by Apple. No idea of the details, just something I've heard on the web, so it must be true.

Hardly the case at all. Some people who are fanatical about FCP 7, will say FCPX is no good. Surfing didn't die when the boards got shorter or additional fins were added. Evolution at work.

FCPX is alive and well.

Thanks.  If 'conform' isn't in iMovie, is FCP X the best choice?  Only choice?  I have a big mac with Lion.

You can slow things down in iMovie...there is a slow motion function. I am not the right guy to ask how to do this, but I know for sure it can be done.

I also do not think FCPX is the only way to do this, but it is the way I do it.

Google is your friend. I am sure if you search a bit, you will find out exactly what is capable within iMovie.
