Random / Radiation found at San O ? not looking good !!
« on: November 13, 2015, 03:01:42 PM »

Documents released as part of secret negotiations over the future of the San Onofre Nuclear Generating Stations near San Diego reveal that the now-shuttered plant was lax with security, exposing workers to dangerous levels of radioactivity from leaks and improperly disposing of nuclear waste.

In January 2012, one of the two generators at San Onofre sprang a small leak, and the plant was shuttered. An investigation eventually revealed that the leak had been caused by vibrations in steam generators that occurred as a result of a flawed generator design. Plant operator Southern California Edison said it is pursuing a claim against generator manufacturer Mitsubishi Heavy Industries as well as Mitsubishi Nuclear Energy Systems.

In June 2013, plant operator Edison decided to permanently close the plant rather than incur the costs of safely restarting it. The future of the plant grounds and all of the toxic waste stored there remains up in the air.

"Probably worse than we think"

In September, an investigation by the NBC TV affiliate in San Diego, KNSD-TV Channel 7, revealed that radioactive equipment from the plant had been stored on both sides of Interstate 5, including along the beach. The investigation, which reviewed documents released to individuals negotiating with Edison over the future of the 25-acre site, also revealed that Edison had covered up evidence of radiation leaks from the plant.

The documents showed that radiation levels at the plant had regularly been so high that Nuclear Regulatory inspectors often refused to perform routine radiation surveys, fearing for their safety.

Nuclear power industry expert Joe Hopenfeld said that the notes reveal that the plant was "very, very sloppy, very very careless in handling radioactive material."

Furthermore, the notes fail to reveal exactly which locations had the highest levels of radiation. "You have hot spots, you don't know what they are," Hopenfield said. "This is an indication of the mentality and the culture at the time at [the plant]."

"We still don't know how high those radiation levels were," said Charles Langley, a whistleblower who once worked for the Utility Consumers' Action Network. "And if Edison gets its way, we will never know... The answer is probably worse than we think."

Waste to be stored a stone's throw from beach

Former San Onofre Safety Officer Vinrod Arora warned that before any plans move forward for the future of the property, it should undergo a thorough and independent inspection. "Be very careful of the goods they accept from Edison with the blessings of the NRC," Arora warned.

The current plan for the property consists of turning at least part of it into a supposedly temporary storage site for nuclear waste. The county has already approved a plan to bury concrete bunkers filled with radioactive waste within 125 feet of the beach. The permit only allows the waste to be stored there for 20 years, but it does not specify what must happen after that time.

Many nuclear power plants are now planning to store their waste on site indefinitely following the abandonment of plans for a single national waste storage site at Yucca Mountain in Nevada.

According to a staff report prepared for the county, the storage site "would eventually be exposed to coastal flooding and erosion hazards beyond its design capacity, or else would require protection by replacing or expanding the existing San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station shoreline armoring (sea wall)."

"Retention of the (fuel storage site) beyond 2051 would have the potential to adversely affect marine and visual resources and coastal access," the report said.

Opponents of the plan are expected to sue to challenge the permit.

Random / Re: Education
« on: November 09, 2015, 10:05:26 AM »
I agree with most everything here , especially Bill when he explains it's a world wide issue as far as parents being clueless. However the clueless  parents in other countries are educating their children at a far higher degree than we are here in America , why ? I believe it's the curriculum or lack of one. I have put 2 kids through public school and my oldest daughter is a 6th grade teacher here on Oahu, I have seen the steady decline of the curriculum in the last 20 years and I can come to no other conclusion other than a deliberate dumbing down of the education system. Our current curriculum teaches kids how to be good worker bees on the plantation and they strip kids critical thinking . They teach Kids WHAT to think .......  not HOW to think ?? Reading comprehension is non existent in public school system just memorizing so they can pass a yearly test , for federal funding of the next year     ?  I remember my grampa telling me his dad had an eight grade education ?? I thought wow must not have been to educated ?? think again .

Here is a final exam to graduate from 8th grade in late 1800's you decide if we've been dumbing down the curriculum and lowering expectations of what children are capable of ??  How many young adults  about to become college graduates , could pass this test ???

The following document was transcribed from the original document in the collection of the Smoky Valley Genealogy Society, Salina, Kansas. This test is the original eighth-grade final exam for 1895 from Salina, Kansas. An interesting note is the fact that the county students taking this test were allowed to take the test in the 7th grade, and if they did not pass the test at that time, they were allowed to re-take it again in the 8th grade. Also of note, the school year was but 7 months, beginning October 1 and ending April 1. allowing 5 months for planting, farming and harvest.

ED-U-CA'-TION, n. [L. educatio.] The bringing up, as of a child, instruction; formation of manners. Education comprehends all that series of instruction and discipline which is intended to enlighten the understanding, correct the temper, and form the manners and habits of youth, and fit them for usefulness in their future stations. To give children a good education in manners, arts and science, is important; to give them a religious education is indispensable; and an immense responsibility rests on parents and guardians who neglect these duties.

Yah sorry Bill i got your number when I got back to oahu , i didn't have my computer on maui and never went online to zone while up on maui .  I missed my bullet for sure , but I had a blast and would like to have done the full run to Harbor , but next time.  Also really want to do a south side run sounds so much fun !!!

Yah P.B  victor is good fun nuts?? ,  but what a great guy , and I've been surfing my whole life and felt very comfortable out there. Just coming in through surf was a trip cause i have no clue where the reef runs and what to expect . so i was constantly looking a half a mile to a mile down line sizing up where the set waves were breaking and making sure I was a little outside was all good. It must be crazy when waves get 15 feet or so can't really come in through the reef and gotta go way outside to get into harbor ???

You guys are blessed for sure Maui is an awesome place , last time i was there was 18 years ago !!! sure has grown :(    I 'm coming back soon for sure :)

about to go do a run out ay Hawaii Kai wind guru calling for 25 to 30 from east :) going to be like that all the way to next week , sucks living in Hawaii yah ??

Well our first time doing Maliko was Saturday (yesterday ) and Victor opted to take us in at Oil tanks , it was pretty rough with some good size swells coming from N.west as well as from the east . We got a late start and it felt pretty sticky out there. definitely had many bumps to ride but was not stringing many bumps together , was just trying to figure out the water and bumps there. For me not knowing where to come in through the surf was the hardest part of the run ( never paddled or surfed the east side before :) and by the time we got down to angle in towards the tanks it was blowing hard at our left side as we were quartering in past Kanaha before Pier 1. I was also using a fixed fin 14 and I'm definitely a rudder man :) it was challenging but super fun. It was a workout on the legs for sure. was a good initiation run for me and my two buddies from Oahu , none of us had ever done Maliko before today. Gavin said as he took us to Maliko that it was blowing 38 to 40 earlier but might have been 35 , we got a late start maybe 1:15 or so .

Today was even bigger with open ocean swells coming from the north but it did not seem as windy as yesterday . I saw victors line and some of the time he was hugging the surf line , but i know how victor is so I stayed outside of him and played it safe , it was super fun and challenging out in condition on a board I have never paddled before :)  Today I stayed closer to victor and was able to get a better visual on where he was heading in , although he was far enough away from me that I had to choose my own line in through the inner reef before Kanaha park.  we cut it shorter today as we had to be at the airport  at 5:30 and we never launched till about 1:30 !!

Since I never paddled Maliko I have nothing else to go by but last 2 days and according to Victor it was challenging with the waves and east swell and strong winds. My legs are still sore as I type this at 10 at night :)  Good news though wind is supposed to be 25 mph from east tomorrow here on Oahu so we doing a run about 9:am Im gonna be fried after tomorrow :)

Big Mahalo to Gavin for shuttling us in his Truck and lending us a board and for Victor taking us 2 days in a row and loading up and lending us two boards. He even lent me his new 14 footer to ride today , so I was over cautious coming in through the waves :) never like ding his new board.  What an initiation weekend !!!

Sorry you couldn't make it  Bill was looking forward paddling with you , there will be a next time soon :)

I think next time Im gonna rent a goofy foot bullet from Scott up at SIC :)

Environment / NASA says Antarctica is actually gaining ice ( 2 days ago)
« on: November 04, 2015, 11:21:08 PM »
The Journal of Glaciology is published six times per year. It accepts submissions from any discipline related to the study of snow and ice. All articles are peer reviewed. The Journal is included in the ISI Science Citation Index.

so arctic ice  level is actually rising which this study says is reducing sea level rise by .23 mm a year . Considering they say average yearly sea level increase for the last 3 years has been right around .43 to .47 that means it is rising by roughly  HALF as much as they predicted .  Hmmm

http://www.ingentaconnect.com/content/igsoc/jog/pre-prints/content-ings_jog_15j071

Abstract:
Mass changes of the Antarctic ice sheet impact sea-level rise as climate changes, but recent rates have been uncertain. Ice, Cloud and land Elevation Satellite (ICESat) data (2003–08) show mass gains from snow accumulation exceeded discharge losses by 82 ± 25 Gt a–1, reducing global sea-level rise by 0.23 mm a–1. European Remote-sensing Satellite (ERS) data (1992–2001) give a similar gain of 112 ± 61 Gt a–1. Gains of 136 Gt a–1 in East Antarctica (EA) and 72 Gt a–1 in four drainage systems (WA2) in West Antarctic (WA) exceed losses of 97 Gt a–1 from three coastal drainage systems (WA1) and 29 Gt a–1 from the Antarctic Peninsula (AP). EA dynamic thickening of 147 Gt a–1 is a continuing response to increased accumulation (>50%) since the early Holocene. Recent accumulation loss of 11 Gt a–1 in EA indicates thickening is not from contemporaneous snowfall increases. Similarly, the WA2 gain is mainly (60 Gt a–1) dynamic thickening. In WA1 and the AP, increased losses of 66 ± 16 Gt a–1 from increased dynamic thinning from accelerating glaciers are 50% offset by greater WA snowfall. The decadal increase in dynamic thinning in WA1 and the AP is approximately one-third of the long-term dynamic thickening in EA and WA2, which should buffer additional dynamic thinning for decades.

Again Creek  , you da MAN !!!

I am so inspired by real life stories that not only transform ones self but leading by example transforms your family and friends lives as well. This is all about leading a healthy , and enjoyable life as long as possible. What would your life be if you continued on habitually the way you were before discovering the tools and minset to change your lifestyle ??  AMAZING brother , I commend you ... you are leaving an inheritance for your children's children my friend. It is easy to have some hiccups along the way but WE have gained the tools and knowledge to get back up out of the water and continue paddling along so to speak.

I agree this forum has transformed my life and way of thinking in many areas and I have gained so much from others here. It is not about paddling but its about the complete package , the life style that paddling and surfing promotes . I don't see why not , God willing, that i will be paddling , surfing and diving into my 80's . It is a choice to live intentionally and not habitually !!  what a ride it has been.  God bless you creek and your family you are an inspiration and a leader to your kids and family. Keep it up and live intentionally :)

Merry Christmas !!

« on: December 20, 2014, 02:36:24 AM »
Based on my family history, the idea that genetics is key sure makes sense.  My dad's side seemed to be almost unaffected by horrible health habits.

One wrinkle though--the idea that some people live a long time despite horrible diets is only true to the extent we understand diet.  Some of the common dietary habits of people who are a generation or two older than us have been labeled horrible, but may not be at all.  The grandpa who eats bacon, eggs, butter and coffee every morning, and red meat regularly for dinner, may have a much healthier diet than his children who avoid eggs, fat and meat.

So in a way, genetics is a mask.  If genetics weren't there as a factor, we'd be forced to re-examine current assumptions about diet, because we couldn't immediately assume anyone who's old but not eating based on the current standard assumptions about diet must be alive due to genetics.

YOUR ON THE MONEY Mike !!!!

for those of you who think's a calorie is a calorie , go eat 2 to 3 thousand calories a day at Jack in the box for one month !!  i don't care how much exercise you get after one month those calories will be weighing you down and your energy level will be down not to mention your health ... yikes.

then go eat for a month Big ass salads and grass fed beef and free range organic chickens and wild salmon and okinawan sweet potato , free range eggs and natural bacon  , protein shakes with coconut oil ...... you get the picture .

I think someone actually did a documentary on his rapid decline in health eating at mcdoodo's for  breakfast lunch and dinner for a month.

Its absurd and completely illogical to say a calorie is a calorie, given the amount of evidence and studies done it defy's logic and basic common sense.

Training, Diet, and Fitness / Re: How are you getting Primal?
« on: December 20, 2014, 02:09:35 AM »
Yo creek !!  just go hard core buddy ,  keep under fifty carbs per day and in a few weeks you'll be back below that fifteen you want to lose. This lifestyle is so cool :) if your surfing a lot and paddling little bit of sweet potato every once in a while will keep your energy level up.

My wife and I had a little boy 4 months ago and I have not gotten in the water or trained for at least 4 months but I am still 185 and holding for the last 3 years . I go down to 178  and up to 188 but basically at 185 and 32 waist. I am 53 years old and LOVING being a dad again , Paleo has allowed me to be up to the task of raising a little guy !!  I have forgotten how much work it is but it is but SO COOL !!

I recently started eating 1 tablespoon of organic honey and one teaspoon of organic cinnamon in my protein shake in the AM , after 2 weeks my weight has not changed and my energy level is JACKED ... who woulda thunk ??  This is by far the best lifestyle I have come across and it becomes second nature quite quickly.

I applaude those who have made the leap like Creek. And all the others , wide load you are my hero for making the decision to change. My new motto is "live with intention and not habitually" that is the paleo lifestyle. In a year you'll be 250 and shredding those waves in two years you'll be feeling like a youngster again . Just enjoy the ride and don't beat yourself up to bad when you hiccup :). learn as much as you can about this way of life and start making a book of all the paleo recipes you like and what works for you this will be a huge foundation for you.

Just go back to basics like creek said and get back on the program. stay between 50 and a hundred grams of good carbs a day , stay away from too much fruit and make sure 60 percent of dietary intake is good fats .. coconut oil, avocados, some nuts ( not too much when trying to lose weight) and lots of grass fed beef and wild salmon :) don't forget the BIG ASS salads to fill you up and give you good carbs. Long paddles on flat water or the ocean and long walks on land. Body weight exercises and you'll be surprised how fast the weight goes down and energy goes UP.

PM me wide load if you need any advice or help. You can do this !! it's a piece of cake ... no pun intended.

Aloha boys

well the SUP crew showed up in force with respect and well thought out responses by email and in person . It was squashed as it was obvious the SUP community was not going to take this sitting down. Well done fellow SUPers, it appears the DLNR will not be implementing any regulations due to the response by the SUP community at the meeting Wed night.Apparently not many surfers showed up to this meeting. Here is part of  the Man who started this whole thing, response. you can read it all here:

Congratulations
to the opponents of the
Safe Surf Pilot Project !!!

You were gracious in your victory.

Thank you to all who supported the Safe Surf Pilot Project. At this point, we seem to be in the minority.  We were also vastly outnumbered at the DLNR meeting.  Elections aren't won by voters.  They are won by voters who actually vote. The opponents of the Safe Surf Pilot Project were well organized and willing to come to the DLNR meeting to speak up and make their voices heard in a courteous and respectful manner. They won this one fair and square.
