Gear Talk / my wave pro construction sucks - need something new
« on: August 24, 2017, 02:50:35 AM »
Hi folks,

I am currently on 2014 Starboard pro 7'7'' x 27 92l. I love it on clean days, on windy and hard conditions I don't "love it" so much but ok. I can survive with it as it's the only wave board that I own.

But, about 3 months ago last layer of construction started to "peel off"; between last layer and the rest is air (damaged part is pretty big and it is getting bigger and bigger day after day. Also, construction started to peel off on several parts of the board so I went to local shaper just to see how we can fix it. It is possible to fix dammage but this "peel off" thing can be endless. So I decide (like I always do when I own a board for some time) that rather than spending money repairing old model wave board, I will sell it for a friendly price, start new story and buy new toy:)

What do you guys suggest for female rider, 56kg? I will stick on the same lenght. Something stable for my weight but still very live under my feet. I usually ride waist to shoulder / head high waves, steep and fast breaking.

Thanks!:) Cheers

I'm currently on 8'6''x28 board, I will be using 7'7'' on clean days, for the rest; mush and chop, my 8'6'' will be under my feet if it will be neccesary. (I'm relatively light - under 55kg with wetsuit).

Yeah, I've heard about the useless handle but I'm kind of used to it as my current board also has the same horrible handle. But fortunately I always park a car on the beach when I go surfing, a couple of meters from the water and I do not need to wear the gloves during the winter... So I can "get use" to it:) beside that, do you think that I should give a go to 2014 model?

Gear Talk / Starboard 7' 7'' x 27 PRO difference
« on: August 23, 2016, 01:26:44 AM »
Hello,

I'm looking forward to buy Starboard 7'7''x27 PRO in carbon. Found one from 2014 for a very good price and so I'm thinking if it is a good idea to save some extra $$$ and buy "older" model from 2014 instead 2015 or 2016 version which are quite expensive (I can buy 3 boards from 2014 for that money; so it is a quite big difference)? I saw that shape changed a bit from 2014; nose and overall shape etc. Has some of you ridden both?

What is the main difference? Is there some difference in stability? What about takeoff? Or are this only slightly changes that are not worth extra money? What do you think?

Thanks a lot!!!

Gear Talk / 7'10"/11" wave board
« on: August 01, 2016, 03:26:06 PM »
Hello everyone! Last mouth I posted a topic about new wave board for female, but I've chainged my mind about 7.0 parallel rails board and now I still did not decide which board for SUP surfing should I get: I'm currently on 8'6''x28''x4 120L, I outgrow it and it is all full of repairs and pretty used (construction is really horrible, it is cracking on the rails and bottom).

I will use it in small powerless beach and reef breaks, waist hight most of the time (I can post picture of spot). Waves are really powerless, but I still did not have problems catching them on my current board.

I'm 52 kg, female, 2years of SUPsurfing.

I want to progress and go smaller and have a board that will be manuvreable and will feel really live under my feet.  But I also want decent stability as I'm surfing on chop 98% of the time and it can be really annoying to get out on such a small board.

I can not demo. And must unfortunately choose between theese 3 brands, as SUP surfing is developing here in Mediteran and we do not have much choice...

So here are my 3 options: New 2014 Starboard Airborn 7.10x30 97L, Fanatic Allwave 7.10x31 110L (used LTD-if I found it for good price or new HRS), or new Naish Hokua 7.10 x 32 120L.

I've tried Hokua 8.3x32, at first it was a bit stringe for me because of such a "round" shape, but incredibly stable, what I really like about it, it was much more stable than my board. Take off was a bit "wierd" at first for me, maybe because I wasn't used to it and because of foot placement that is much different than on my board. But after I while I got used to it.

Do you think that x32 and 120L will be too much for me? Or will be ok as the waves here are small and powerless? I guess it will be easier to take off on Hokua than for example on SB Airborn?  I really love Starboard Airborn, but I'm a bit concern about stability. I guess that it will be most maneuverable of all 3? But also the most unstable.  I really like Fanatic Allwave, it would be my 1st option, but I found LTD version to be very expensive here in EU and HRS version is heavy as hell for its size.

Any ideas? Thanks for help!!

Kind regards

Crazier than spending $1800 on a board that might be too short for you?

You understand me wrong, I like the idea of having a tons of fun on a 199$ foam board! it is sick! I never tought about it!! ;)

Thanks guys!!

It is true what @nalu-sup said about the curves and overall shape of boards. That's why I'm a bit skeptical about it.
I'm actually from EU, so it will be easier for me if I buy a board form "big" brands that are accessible here in local shops, such as Starboard, Fanatic, Naish..

I'm looking for something really "live" under my feet but still enough stable to handle the chop. I think that if I jump from my 8'6"pro shape to Allwave that is just slightly shorter and a bit wider than my SUP, there will not be much difference and that I will outgrow it in a couple of months.. I would really like to jump on something like 7'4" x 26/27 but stability concerns me on such small board.. Thats why I'm thinking about getting Raptor; small, live but stable. Did anyone of you tried both? Allwave and Raptor? Which one feels more stable? Which one is more fun?  :)

Hahaha soft top really? That's pretty crazy!!

"I will be riding knee-waist high waves, sometimes even shoulder high but rarely."

Knee-waist high beach break waves or reef/point break waves?

reef/point break 80% of the time

Hello everyone!  8)

I'm currently on 8’6”x 283⁄4”x41⁄2”, board is pretty old and full of repairs as it was ridden a lot, I outgrew it already; it is a great board, I really love it, I've learned a lot on it but I want to go smaller and progress even more:)

Last year I jumped form 10'x32 to 8'6". I'm 53kg female.

So here is the question: what next? :)

Rule no 1: stability&easy to take off as waves here do not have much power

I will be riding knee-waist high waves, sometimes even shoulder high but rarely.

I was like 99% that I will pick Allwave 7'11" from fanatic, but I saw Naish Raptor in the shop and started to think about getting this "new" shapes with parallel rails. What do you think would be better choice for small waves? What do you think about parallel rails? If I compare these two boards, (Raptor 7.0x28) which would "feel" more stable under my feet?

Thanks, cheers  ;)

+1! the right longboard shape board will turn sharp! my 10 pin tail high performance longboard shape turns sharper then some if the wide short board style boards with the wide tail. looks like a longboard will be a better match and more fun for your conditions.

may i ask you, what board is that?  :)

most of the time is like that. there come "big" days like 3,4 times a month, but sadly, this is a typical day on this surf unfriendly part of the world. i know that sticking to longboard shape would be the best, but i decided to go shorter anyway as we also sometimes surf here with a surfboard with friends - so i believe that riding something like 8.0 will still be possible.
i've made a "compromise", short one (7'11-8'0) for big days, surf trip and for progression and a longboard type sup, but still bit shorter, narrower, thinner and lighter than my ex board (something about 9'.0-9'6max) for everything else.

yeah, i can get this boards in local shop. i also like the rrds. i really wanted  fanatic all wave, but just can't find good dealer here.

thank you for all advices, it is time to finally choose the right one. so first, third or the last?  ::) ::) should i go 8.5 as the waves are small or 7.11?

here is a picture of spot, just to get a feeling what "kind" of waves we have here.

thankyou!

many people suggested me sunova, but here in EU we do not have it's dealers..

when i catch the wave i try to carve,turn.. but my board was very irresponsible, as i'm a 55kg, and it was 9.8 allrounder/windsup board with thick rails (5 1/6). i was struggling to move that huge and heavy thing (15kg) when i was on the wave. it wasn't impossible, but it was very unpleasant and slowly i was bored because i couldn't progress with it. only good thing of my ex board was stability and the possibility of catching even the smallest wave because of its length.

i surf 1m+ few times a month, when the conditions are "proper" here (this happens mostly on strong wind days). but sometimes i just "surf" 50cm waves (if i can call it waves…) at home spot, which come more often.

thank you all!

sadly, i can not demo boards here (instead of inflatable ones). also the selection of boards, that people ride on nearest spots is really weak.. mostly bic 10 footers

on this picture is my narrower selection of the boards that i can order nearby. which shape of the boards below would suit me best? i really want that it is enough stable and that catches waves very easily as waves here are very small and mushy. will i struggle catching small waves on 7.11 because is pretty short? furthermore, should i rather look for flat rocker?

i'm alsto thinking of a pro wave 8.5 or all wave...

hello everyone

i'm buying new sup ONLY for wave riding

i've just sold my 9'8'' 170l custom, fat rails (5 and something) on which i've learned to surf. last session with it was just boring, i caught every possible wave but couldn't even turn or do anything on this tank instead of riding forward - I'm 55kg, 170cm female.

so now i'm here, buying new board that would enable me to progress. i was thinking: what shape, size, width, length and volume should i look for? what about rails? what would be the best option for my weight and skill level (intermediate 55kg) and waves: small (50cm-1m most of the time, 1.50 every now and then), mushy, chop?

i've improved my balance by riding jimmy lewis u-boat for races and riding a lot of flat, but still, stability is very important for me when i go to surf waves (because of horrible conditions here). although  i would really like to jump on 7.11 x 29 and ride short board - like style, but i think that this would be just to big jump from 9.8. and that i would struggle too much with balancing myself? what do you think?

what size and shape should i look for? would something like 8.5 x 28 120l be ok or still to big? should i look for 30, 31 width for better stability? ::) i also have to think and compromise length of new board and size of the waves here..

i would really appreciate if someone would help me! thank you :)

i have opportunity to grab used race board. it is getting warmer here and it is time to start paddling again. i found 3 used boards with similar prices. i will 100% pick one from that list, so any other suggestions of any other models are unfortunately useless (selection of boards here is extremely extremely poor and those 3 are ok for my budget).  -12.6 x 25 starboard all star (2013 carboon) -12.6 x 24 falcon (flatwater, 2014 full carboon) -12.6 x 25 jimmy lewis u-boat (2014)  170cm, 53kg, i'm planning to race a bit this summer. i paddle every day on flat water unless i go surfing to a wave spot nearby. what do you suggest? i will use it 50% on pure flat water (at the evening, when the sea calms down) and 50% on little more windy conditions during the day, if i get lucky i will also be able to do some downwind. sea here is very variable, it goes form pure flat water (like lake ect.) to 5m waves on strong wind.   what should i do? all star is portably most versatile board form my list and also the best for variable conditions here, but (i guess) not so fast as other two? i'm also planning to race on lakes and rivers, so maybe should i go for falcon or u-boat? how do falcon or u boat perform on little bit musshy/windy sea? which one is the fastest of the three?  thankyou all!:)
