Yes, it's actually VERY fast. I haven't put my paddlecoach on it yet, but even with those goobers (grandkids and my daughter) paddling we were substantially faster than my Blackfish. My daughter was pretty helpful--she was working hard at it. The other two were spotty.

Millenials!  ;)

Looks great. Cool that you can do so much of it yourself.

My grandparents had a pool and lived just down the road so I started early.

I'd say I'm around a 7 as a swimmer. Completely comfortable in the water swimming above or below. Decent technique though I never swam competitively.

I was just in Kona and came upon their shop the last day there. I didn't get to paddle any of the boards, but I talked with the owner Ian Foo. Passionate guy and fun to talk to. From what I gathered they make their own boards there on the Big Island.

I was impressed with what I saw. I really wish I could have taken one out, but I just didn't have time. They seem to do a lot of surf and paddleboard lessons from their small store front on the water. Their rental boards were their own. They also make their own Outrigger Canoes that looked awesome.

Here's a link to a UK magazine review of one of their boards.

They use their own boards for rentals, but those mostly seemed from their basic, more entry level line. The racing and touring boards I saw and I liked the owner.

They were preparing to ship out four boards they sold to people on the mainland the day I went there. They ship direct to the airport for pickup there.

Nice. I just spent twenty minutes playing around with the various cameras.

@ford

Once you get off the ferry on the Bolivar Peninsula, travel about 1 mile until you come to 16th Street. Turn right and go all the way down to the beach and you can park on the beach. There will be a small boat ramp there (next to the North Jetty on 17th Street) and you can sup in the Galveston Ship Channel. I never used the free boat ramp. I used to launch my kayak from the beach next to the free boat ramp. Just stay about 125 yards away from the North Jetty (which people will be fishing on) and you'll be fine.

If you feel adventurous enough, you can paddle on down to the Boat Cut on the North Jetty. There you will see how fast the current can move through the boat cut and you can decide if you want to go through the Boat Cut to the Gulf side of the North Jetty. Just remember, you have to paddle back through the Boat Cut to get back to launching point where you vehicle is parked.

One last place on Bolivar is just a little ways past 16th Street. When you come up Rettilon Rd, turn right, head on down to the beach, turn right on the beach and travel all the way to the edge of the Bird Sanctuary and park there. You'll have the entire Gulf of Mexico in front of you to paddle at your heart's desire.

You can see these places on Google Maps.

Gracias!

Strange question, but I spend some time back there visiting family and know the area a bit. Why don't any of y'all paddle in the bay or on open water? When I was last in Galveston the onshores were so strong it seemed you could do a pretty solid downwinder across the bay.

Am I missing something about the Gulf that makes it undesirable?

Honestly, I'm just pretty new to the sport and don't know the best places to put in around Galveston. I'm going to check out the Galveston State park paddle trail sometime soon.

I'd love to try a downwinder across Galveston Bay.. but the first couple of times I'd want to be with a group who have done it before. I honestly don't know if there is anyone here doing something like that.

Thanks! I had heard that before from a friend who is a current League City police officer. (His name is Adam Heausler) Yeah, my phone and wallet come with me in a water proof pouch.

I know Adam, he is a great guy. His wife was my oldest daughter's math teacher a few years back. Good people. Be safe out there.

Ha... small world. We are good friends with the family. My wife teaches in the district at Space Center Intermediate.

Cheers!

What a clean, simple and cool looking board!

Went to the Dominican Republic for a week on vacation and came home to a very nice, all carbon, adjustable paddle from POP.

I can't wait to try it out this weekend.

Some might see it as overkill but I go with a pfd and a leash each time, wearing both. I'm a strong swimmer, but better safe than sorry. I'm out by myself most of the time so it makes sense just in case I knock myself out somehow.

#1 Rule:  Don't ever loan your board to someone.  They rarely care for it like you would.

I have the same rule for guitars also..... I work hard to pay for nice stuff... and I can't afford just to replace it if someone bashes it to hades.

I've decided to name my board Bono. I was leaning toward Edge, but it just doesn't flow of the tongue the same way.

Anyway, I came up with the name because U2 is a favorite band of mine and they had an album named
Pop... though it wasn't a favorite of mine or most of their fans...
