Free, unasked for legal advice from people in other countries.....worthless.

Anything Area10 writes.....worthless.

Relishing the fight is normal for winners, in any field, competition improves the breed ;D

Enjoy your zone but it wont be my zone anymore.

Read my original post on page three of this thread when your sitting in your dingy little office.

Let's hope that you guys who are advocating violence never end up in court (or in a coffin) following a "one punch death" situation or similar, with the lawyers picking over the words you have written on this forum. One glance at some of the statements here and the jury would lock you up and throw away the key.

There are many vital skills in life that we learn, and which can save our lives, or kill us, or land us in jail if done wrong or the skills are not sufficiently honed. Driving and swimming are two examples. But avoiding getting into potentially life-changing situations over something as trivial as a wave is another example. Sometimes the hardest thing to do is to park your ego and walk (or paddle) away. But also the smartest.

So be a doormat for every other surfer or your going to be locked up?  Are you serious?

Bet you don't get many waves area10  ;D

Sort it out on the water.

Anyone who drops in on you is vulnerable to a poke or prod from your paddle while they are riding the wave, snag their legrope and rip them off the wave.  If you cant reach them with your paddle then did they really drop in on you?

The place I surf is in a capital city in Australia, probably 100,000 surfers call it their local, dropping in is very much the norm and if they're a grommet or female AND they have good board control I let it go and work around them because I want to encourage those demographics to take up the sport.

Now to the Goon problem, adult male with poor surfing skills, after the first drop in which can be written off as accidental as we have all done it and is excusable I changeover to endless hassle mode which cause's the goon to explode or leave both good outcomes for me.

I don't have fear of people throwing punches at me, in fact I relish it and try to egg them on but it just doesn't happen :(  I have to admit, I am ugly, S bend nose, lots of scars and built like an ape.

Like I said, sort it out on the water

Ever noticed how few Australians there are?   Then compare our results at sport, Olympics,  Americas cup and footy.
As a country we punch way above our weight.  We even make the English language interesting.  ;)

No one has mentioned the wind or side chop.  Usually its easier to pivot to the left or right with a bit of assistance from the elements so you can out closer to a good wave and pivot at the last second if you use the wind and side chop to help.

When I standup paddle surf I try to make the fins and rail shape do most of the work with a bit of body torquing and the occasional shove with the paddle if I cant get the board to turn to where I want to be on the wave.

It would be boring if we all surfed the same way ;D

SUP General / Re: How do you handle proners blocking you?
« on: April 26, 2016, 09:16:32 AM »
I don't notice them other then being obstacles to maneuver around.  :)

Same in any situation involving other people, on the road, shopping centers etc. The people are just lumps or traffic cones to walk around.

The chance of me remembering one proner who was in my way during a session let alone multiple sessions is zero.

I am just out there for a surf, no talking and definitely no listening,  I am aware enough to know if I have dropped in accidentally and bail out before I am told.

Surfing is a pretty cool thing, some people seek out hassles to stuff any good thing up, dont see the point myself  ;D

I have three myself, 23 year old daughter is the most work by far but still very amusing,  we have a standing joke around here, goes along the lines off " pack your bags, we are going on a guilt trip ".
Good for a laugh anyway,
Cheers,

The pop up is the key, if you can still do it then a prone longboard is a great toy to own.  Short board is good for a stormy surf and the extra control is nice when the waves are big and bottom is reef.
I dont think you can have to many boards, the other day my wife was walking around counting my boards, I told her it was a odd thing to do, very bad form and the idea had never occurred to me to total them up.  Some things just cant be quantified  ;D

Darryn--I love your approach. There's going to be a pretty extensive segment of this book on alternative strategies, basically what do you do if you've been screwed, or you never wanted to save, or never could. I think it's an important element. Few people are in a position to save half their income throughout their working life. But if you wanted to retire in the fashion of those bullshit ads on TV, then you need to have done at least that.

i grew up in total poverty, not enough money for food, left home when 15 and worked as apprentice blacksmith.  I worked on ways to make money (which I am obsessed with, even collect coins) every spare minute until I was 38.  I had risen up in the world somewhat by then, healthy savings account, some houses for my family to live in, no debt.

I am married with three kids, my wife had been tinkering away part time at uni doing a teaching degree, we had a frank discussion along the lines of "you have achieved your goals, what about mine?".  I thought this was a reasonable request and disentangled myself from my careers, dropping back to part time and ending paid employment when I was 45.  I have superannuation, military and government backed, kicks in when I am 60, best bit is I put a substantial amount of dollars into it 25 years ago and have always set my risk level to low.  I just dont trust anyone else with my money and never have so no dodgy super companies and never went backwards, 0.5% growth one year, which is ridiculous but not a loss.

Even if I spend my nut each week and never make a cent we cant run out of money before my super kicks in.  My wife helps educate the kids who need it the most, sacrifices her wage into her government superannuation (risk set to low) and gets the same amount as I do from our savings to blow on crap that interests her.

The point I am trying to make is a very old and simple one, hard work coupled with continuous accumulation of relevant qualifications will take you from zero to full retirement in 30 years if you want it enough.

Thats about the end of my story, good luck with your book and I hope you guys all make out like bandits on the stockmarket,
cheers,
Darryn

How much money do you really need each week?  Thats the first number you have to come up with, my nut is $500 living in Australia.
Next question is how am I going to get it?
Options,
Going to an ATM and withdraw it from savings, advantages of this are no tax and ATM's are plentiful. Disadvantages are obvious.
Another option is buy something busted and fix it then sell it, risks are involved but I can make my nut in a few hours of tinkering.  You need a network to help disposal but finding the device in need of repair is amusing and sometimes I make my nut for a few weeks.
Sorry to repeat myself but I never invest money the same way everyone else is, thats for bunnies, I would rather hunt bunnies then be one.
Make sure the nut you work out is your requirements, not what you have been told by someone who stands to benefit from an inflated amount.
Good luck,
Darryn

I have read this thread, very interesting stuff, a mix or stockmarket advice and some real stories about people going forwards and backwards.
How can I add to this I wonder?  Retired from full time work at 38 and part-time work at 45 been going for about 4.5 years now living off my savings and investments.  Some Basic rules, I follow
1  Dont live flashy, if you look rich you pay the rich price
2  If everyone else is investing in something it isnt a good idea to invest also, thats because the taxman and everybody else is taking a cut of your profit.  Think investment properties, stockmarket, that sort of stuff
3  Be sneaky, use your savings to buy and sell stuff that nobody, except you, knows about.  If you have an interest or particular skill bargains can be recognized and flipped.
4  Live frugally and give to your family with acts, not iphones.  I built a nice garage at my daughters house for her birthday, material cost was negligible, took a couple of days.
I hope some of this helps somebody, it isnt the way your supposed to retire but it works,
cheers,
DK

Sounds like cabin fever to me, suffer from the same thing at times.   A change of adrenaline source fixes me up, couple of scares on the motorbike, some aerobatics and then get the chain saw out ;D

The old sup's seem positively inviting after that.

Good luck with your short board hunt,
Cheers DK
