Gear Talk / Re: Winter SUS - how to keep your head warm?
« on: October 08, 2013, 08:38:19 AM »
The next piece I need to figure out is how to keep my head warmer. I've been wearing a 5/3 hooded vest over a 4/3 wetsuit but still find the resulting ice cream headache whenever I go under to be brutal. Is there any kind of hood or hat or face mask that other northern SUSers find helpful for curbing the ice cream headache in the winter? Or is it just an unavoidable consequence of cold water SUS?

Since you're already using a 5/3 hood, there's not much else I can think of to wear... I assume its a full face hood and not one of those beanies. You can try putting Vaseline on the exposed areas of your face... it doesn't keep you "warm" but helps with the wind blowing on a wet face.

Gear Talk / Re: Need fin screw for 2010 Starboard Blend
« on: October 07, 2013, 11:37:57 AM »
I assume you're referring to your center fin? If so, I believe its a US Box (or Longboard Fin Box)... if you're just missing the screw, you can go to a hardware store - make sure you buy stainless steel. If you are also missing the screw plate, call your local surf shop... they should be able to help you with anything fin related.

I've never seen one before but thats a good idea about using a spanner screw. Is the spanner screw and the screwdriver thingee needed for it something you can buy at Home Depot?

No. I purchased it from Ace Hardware... they have a much better selection of "specialty" bolts and screws than Home Depot or Lowes, especially in stainless steel. There are also other types of "security" screw heads you can use that are a bit more common than the spanner head...

Technique / Re: How to get into a wave on Allwave?
« on: October 02, 2013, 10:41:55 AM »
I believe the staggered stance for paddling recommendation is your parallel stance but with one foot back - don't have both feet lined up in the center-line of the board like surfing... this should help with balancing. Try your back foot at a 45 degree angle pointing out - this may help as well... once you catch the wave, you can move your feet towards a more traditional surf stance. As others have mentioned, the staggered stance will help with your ability to weight or un-weight the board front to back but still keep your right/left balance...

I use the DockLocks and find they work great either on the car, on the beach, or at home.

+1

I did this with mine when I couldn't store my board inside... I swapped the one way screw that is provided with a spanner drilled screw so I can remove it - as the name implies, the one way screw is permanent. The spanner drilled screw is uncommon enough to prevent removal with your typical screwdriver...

Another vote for the Inno racks... super easy to use, durable, and lockable. The only thing I did not like were the pads they included for the cross bars - I replaced them with Dakine pads for aero bars. I also went to HD and bought self seal pipe insulation to wrap around the rubber coated cable straps as an extra measure of protection for my boards. The Inno is also versatile for strapping down anything... ladders, lumber, etc.

If not, head south to the Peninsula D"Azuero. The details are hazy here because I was hitchhiking with a couple from South Africa and some dude from SoCal with the first live nose ring I'd ever seen, that was long ago. I think it took a couple of days or more to catch rides to La Palma, and a trip to Playa Venado. I camped here one night and there was one bar / restaurant. Its probably changed a lot since then.

Definitely has changed a lot in Playa Venao - in fact,  everyone now refers to it as Playa Venao but the correct name is Playa Venado... can't recall the explanation given to me. A few hotels but none are Marriott/Sheraton types, which is a good thing!. A very cool low key vibe... not "touristy".

This hotel recently opened when I was there this past July and talked with the owner a bit. Real nice guy and the prices were reasonable... somewhere in the vicinity of $50 a night.

I can't comment on bocas but have been to Playa Venao in Panama several times - it is on the Pacific side and has a great break. Several major surf competitions have been held here... I can help with info on this location if you're open and interested in a different location in Panama.

Gear Talk / Re: SUPreme wetsuits - sizing and where to buy?

NoogaSUP, you can try calling their parent company for sizing info... http://hendersonsportgroup.com/

They also make the Hyperflex line of wetsuits and they were pretty good about giving sizing advice since I fell inbetween sizes.

« on: September 26, 2013, 08:09:32 AM »
Go with the 10... I've always sized down with booties because they stretch - in fact, I usually go a whole size down regardless of the brand.

Try and see if Zappos has the particular model you are looking for... they offer free return shipping in case it doesn't fit (or at least they used to).

I've spent enough money to realize that its not the equipment that's holding me back, its me and my lack of skills regardless of the sport... I prefer to watch a video of someone ripping as well but for the technique.

Post from the Random section... not a SUP video but fun to watch - doesn't make me want to run out and buy one!

If you'd really like to understand how our government presently works, hold your nose and read "This Town".

I'll have to put that one on the list... and if you want to read a fictional story about the demise of society due to government burdens that is unfortunately becoming reality, read "Atlas Shrugged".

I wonder how much an oil change is on the Veyron?

It doesn't matter since he probably charges the cost against his company... I'm sure the Veyron costs are depreciated considering its has a "Barrett-Jackson" billboard on it!

Wonder if he picked it up at auction  ;)

Gear Talk / Re: Naish Glide Durability?
« on: September 13, 2013, 07:05:53 AM »
Ditto what Weeble said... also suggest going to a shop that rents paddleboards and see what they use and whether the "damage" those boards see is acceptable to you. The abuse the rental boards see is probably more in-line with plastic kayaks... I personally would not treat a Naish Glide or any epoxy/carbon board like a plastic kayak.
