I'd forgotten how awesome Kent Apo was in poor conditions (for Maui) on an old Munoz longboard.  It looks pretty nice compared to 50 degree Oregon coast shore break.

I love Buffet as much for his prose as his prolific investments.  I saw this quote today and had just been thinking something similar (not quite as poetically).  He penned in 2000 (just prior to the dotcom bubble crash)  “The line separating investment and speculation, which is never bright and clear, becomes blurred still further when most market participants have recently enjoyed triumphs...Nothing sedates rationality like large doses of effortless money...They know that overstaying the festivities — that is, continuing to speculate in companies that have gigantic valuations relative to the cash they are likely to generate in the future — will eventually bring on pumpkins and mice. But they nevertheless hate to miss a single minute of what is one helluva party. Therefore, the giddy participants all plan to leave just seconds before midnight. There’s a problem, though: They are dancing in a room in which the clocks have no hands.’

I hate to be a naysayer at a grand ball, but it seems like the new young Cinderella investors are partying like its 1999.

Random / The first real crises of Trump’s presidency
« on: February 28, 2020, 07:35:36 AM »
The lack of preparation for the arrival of a pandemic, further agitated by an administration that favors loyalists over qualified professionals, has left the US in a particularly vulnerable position.  The recent whistle blower account of the initial handling described a careless protocol that hastened the arrival of the virus.  The current testing standards allowed for a general population outbreak.
Financial losses are being exacerbated by the lack of trust in the President.  Trump, a serial liar, can not assuage fears or inform the public at this critical time.  An anti-science, alternative facts administration has little ammunition to sooth markets or calm pandemic panic.  Even Trump supporters don’t trust the commander in chief to provide reliable emergency information.  This type of event was warned about by many an ex Trump staffer-and sadly, now it’s here.

Where does our love hate relationship with AI go from here?

I recall reading an article that the first computer scientist/Coder who experimented with social was so alarmed that he destroyed all of his data and refused further comment.

Random / The great American read
« on: May 23, 2018, 03:22:58 PM »
This interesting reading list was featured on PBS last night.

http://www.pbs.org/the-great-american-read/books/#/

I’d include several of these if compiling a long list of my own favorites (Gulliver’s Travels, A Prayer for Owen Meany, 1984, Atlas Shrugged, etc) and there are others that I haven’t read that are now on my future list after watching the commentary (i.e. Game of Thrones, Confederacy of Dunces, The Shack, A Separate Peace).

Any Zoner votes for or against the PBS choices?

SUP General / Another PFD thread
« on: August 23, 2015, 09:05:40 AM »
Recent events have prompted another review of the strongly contested topic of safety protocol and PFD/leash usage.   The primary risks in SUP, and most watersports, are drowning and hypothermia.  I usually don’t wear a PFD.   When I wear a leash, it’s not intended as a safety device.  Many in the watersports community support mandatory PFDs and others are strongly opposed.

PFDs can hinder a long swim particularly in currents and riptides.  Being cognizant of your nearest exit point and prepared to swim that distance in the current conditions (currents, wind, and temperature, etc) is crucial to safety.  I think having a mental plan to deal with injury or equipment failure is a good idea.  Relying on a leash or life vest may create a false sense of security.
Having a pal and a plan for any extended distance paddling is more valuable than any safety gear.  I’m not always as mindful of this aspect as I should be but I am improving.

This in no way is a statement on the actions of other paddlers.   No fault accidents happen.

Random / Dear Mr. Bucks
« on: December 31, 2013, 06:48:19 PM »
Anyone who has received one of these letters should appreciate this.  We were sent a rather lengthy one (from a comic book corporation of some note) a while back.  We ceased and desisted.  We had ceased before, but this was our first desist.  Kinda wish we'd have taken Britton's route instead.  His story:

Starbucks is known for aggressively going after small businesses that appear to infringe on its trademark rights.

So it was no surprise that a tiny brewpub in Missouri got a cease-and-desist letter from the coffee chain after it started selling a beer called "Frappicino."

But unlike other businesses that have quietly caved to the coffee giant's demands, Jeff Britton, owner of Exit 6 Pub and Brewery in Cottleville, responded with a sarcastic letter and a $6 check, which he claimed was his total profit from selling three pints of the beer. He posted the letters to Facebook.

Britton addressed his response to a Starbucks attorney and "Mr Bucks" and repeatedly referred to the beer throughout as the "F Word" to avoid "risk of further lawsuits."

"I would like for both [attorney Anessa] Owen Kramer and Mr Bucks to rest assured we meant no deception, confusion, or mistaking in the naming of the beer F Word," Britton wrote. "We never thought that our beer drinking customers would have thought that the alcoholic beverage coming out of the tap would have actually been coffee from one of the many, many, many stores located a few blocks away. I guess that with there being a Starbucks on every corner of every block in every city that some people may think they could get a Starbucks at a local bar. So that was our mistake."

Britton continued, "We also promise to stop production of our 'Starbuck-McDonalds-Coca Cola-Marlboro Honey Lager' for fear of further repercussions."

He insisted that Starbucks apply his $6 check "towards the legal fees Ms Owen Kramer received for her efforts in nabbing Exit 6 in our dastardly F Word naming practices."

"We realize  Mr Bucks probably paid her more than Exit 6 made last year," Britton added. "We just want to help a business like Starbucks. Us small business owners need to stick together."

Riding on the publicity of the letters, Exit 6 is now selling an "F Word" beer.

Here's the Starbucks letter:

These gals are awesome.  This is a hairy venue with speeds of 35mph plus.  I can't wait to see this years event.  I'm nowhere near ready to enter (still working on getting the slide down).   This is now my inspiration!
