Downwind and Racing / What's your favorite 14' race board for the flats
« on: November 07, 2011, 06:22:24 PM »
Well, it sounds like for us East Coasters 14' is where some serious battles take place so....I'll start identifying the boards of choice for the area...

What's your favorite 14' race board for the flats with occasional downhill opportunities on short-period wind swell?

Interested in displacement shapes with width 25-28"

Many Thanks  ;D ;D

Downwind and Racing / Future of racing

Question is for all because what happens West will likely migrate over time, but directed at East Coast USA, pointed Northeast:

In order, what class of racing will dominate next few years:

1. Stock
2. 14
3. UL

I'm thinking right now for East coast, 1,2,3, but I'd like to see 1,3,2 ('cause I don't want to invest in a 14).

Is 14' maintaining a strong following, or is it losing ground to Stock or UL?

Didn't race these last two years so I'm ignorant...which is why I'm askin'... ;D

Aloha

Gear Talk / Distance paddlers, what's your paddle preference?
« on: June 21, 2010, 06:53:56 PM »
Most of my SUP paddling background is <6 miles. Recently I started putting on 8-12 mile runs and have been tearing up my tender hands, constantly changing paddles which of course rip the calluses built up by the previous paddle, so I haven't been too bright about that... OC paddles never gave me any trouble...the SUP paddles are definitely different.

Anyway, for those of you who regularly do longer runs, >6-8 miles, what type of paddle shaft do you prefer and do you use gloves? I don't like gloves and am trying to build the right calluses, but am undecided between the Kialoa oval shape paddle shaft (which I love for surfing) and the smooth round C4 XPR or textured round QuickBlade Elite. All three blades are nice and flex/stiffness is fine, but I'm really in a pickle of what shaft to go with for the season.

In the end experience will point me in right direction, but in the meantime I'm all ears for any suggestions.

Thanks!

Gear Talk / Choice of fins for quad
« on: May 21, 2010, 05:26:34 AM »
Hi All,

Just added boxes for quad setup on a PSH 10' AA and PSH 12' G/R. Also have a C4 10' BK-Pro (stock 4+1).

Have not messed with quad setups much on my surfboards so pretty much starting from zero.

Any suggestions on Future quad fins for the above 3 boards? I can probably get away with same fins for the PSH 10' & BK-Pro, with something bigger for the PSH 12'.

Many thanks, -JC

Technique / What balance training

do you do off-water?

I play with IndoBoard, Wobble Board, some Yoga, and put together a Slackline; but none with any regularity and after a marathon surf yesterday (after a month out of water) in no-wind greasy, but bumpy (as in little bumps from many angles that kept me either wobbling like a deer on ice, or on my ass) I vowed to work in a daily routine, preferably a combination of above.  Tried slacklining earlier this year and it kicked my ass, so I'm hoping that putting time there will pay dividends.

Surfing when you're out of shape is one thing, but not so bad if you have patience, smoothness, good timing, and of course lots of experience. But, SUP'ing when your out of balance is just downright cruel punishment to my fragile ego...

Downwind and Racing / MA Bay Downwinder
« on: October 30, 2009, 10:19:42 AM »
Hey All,

Are there any New Englanders (and others of course...) here who think a downwind run from Gloucester, MA to Hull, MA would work? I imagine there'd be a bit of crabbing left to get East of Boston (or Graves) light.

How about other runs in the area under prevailing winds?

Typical Fall-Spring winds are NorthEast so if the course would work, there are a number of days to do it.

Just got back to the area after 4 years away and scheming downwind runs that'll keep me active with a paddle and a board. Really, I'm open to anything from ME-RI.

Cheers. -JC
