I tend to always do a switch stance take off, it just gets a bit hairy when it's big.
Or I sometimes ride goofy.

Check out the new 11' Gong it's super wide, I can't remember if it's 34 or 36 wide.

The board has to have rocker all the way through. Its just that the center is in mm.

I would also be tempted to put in a step tail, wide for stationary and narrow when traveling.
Plus a form of schooner bow to displace water and chop.

For me being wide is not a problem for what you plan to use it for. You are not making a racing machine. However I would sink in where you stand as you need to be as near to the water as possible. The higher up you are the more unstable it will be.

An interesting project, have fun.

Hi Shane.

I enjoyed watching the video as it gave me a chance to watch technique.

For a 9' board you must be doing a lot of things correct to keep it straight.

I am sorry that I can't give you diagrams yet as I am no were near that section on my site, so I can only give you ideas.

I am from the straight arm school, we do not bend the arms in power kayak strokes. The power comes from the body core muscles so as suggested it is the rotation of the shoulders that is important.

The thing that sticks out to me is your bending from the lower back. This reduces power and can cause problems later with back pain. It is very important not to bend sideways when placing the blade in the water. A rotation of the shoulders should correct this. The other one is the bend at the hips when reaching forward. It is far more efficient to bend at the knees and angle the body forwards. Then as you do the stroke you drive forwards and up with the hips, using larger muscles and involving another set of muscles, your legs.

When you first try this it is very tiring but as your body gets used to using the muscles you will find you will have greater power.

If you have more questions please post more video and we can see if we can help.

Happy paddling.

Russell.

Technique / Re: Turning around Bouys in flat water racing
« on: March 13, 2010, 10:11:12 AM »
Ok Here is my pennies worth and one I use a lot both in flat water and surf. I call it the switch bow rudder. The example is from a flat water paddling stroke but can be done in the surf stance as well. Very useful if you are riding backside.

In 2) you are just angling the blade slightly.
In 3) you move the blade further forwards and open the blade more.
In 4) I have all my weight on the front foot and toes to lift the tail out of the water and angle the board towards the paddle. This makes the tail slide.
The further forwards you step the faster the turn.

I find that by using a combination of a traditional turn and this you can keep your speed up as you can move the blade very quickly into another power stroke forwards.

Hope you have some great sessions.

Russell.

Thanks Bill.

I had already realized that so I have modified the original post.

Hope you are getting some good sessions.

Hi every one.
I have been away from the forum for a long time but some of you may find it interesting to follow the development of my new web site.
It is right at the beginning and I am publishing it as I work on it, so changes happen every day.
The main part of it is putting down Ideas on technique I have found. Obviously at first I am putting down a beginner foundation and hope to take it up to more advanced stages.
Once I have got all the sections working I hope to have the facility where people can upload there spot location where they paddle.

We have had an amazing winter so far and hope to have a great year and wishing you have the same.

Russell

Sorry forgot to put the address down.

www.standuppaddleboarding.info

Plus here is an example of one of the graphics and text.

The basic power stroke.

It is important to get the board moving before you start to use a power stroke, so this basic power stroke is in the forward facing position with your feet parallel.

Start by doing 2 or 3 short soft strokes then angle your body more forwards so you can place the blade further forwards. It is important not to bend to much at the waist, as in 1).

Once the blade enters the water both arms should be straight and the paddle should be vertical in the sideways plain, as in 2).

3) and 4) are the same movement as in the first stroke you learnt. However you should try and have the same pressure on each arm. So the more power you put into moving the bottom arm back the more power you have to put through the top arm.

As you get to 5) you should be moving your hips forwards and taking the power out of the stroke.

6) and 7), you are rolling the wrists forwards and taking the paddle out of the water.
As you bring the blade forwards, keep it low to the water and aerodynamic.

Hey Bob thanks for that, Great you got out in some waves.

I have to say the paddle shot is really funny.

Was the air and water temps about the same as no fogging. It looks cold but a nice day.

I have to wait until Go Pro replace my clip before I can try the paddle mount. It broke before I even got in the water but they said they will send me one strait away. What great service.

Look forward to your next outing and hope the head behaves itself.

Sessions / Jameos with Sylvano
« on: January 30, 2009, 02:59:00 AM »
Second day on the new board and a try with the Go Pro on video mode.

I will have to find a way to stop the fogging.

We went to el Burro in Punta Mujeres to go in the water with a little wave to warm up. There was only a light onshore wind but it was enough to chop up the surface. We then went along to Hedionda, took a couple of waves but it was a bit too close to the rocks.

The camera had fogged up by then but it is the one where I have to try and kick out to not go on the rocks.

We then paddled back to the cars and then drove up to Jameos where I stayed on the shore and took some video of Sylvano.

On the way back it was getting very choppy but the board behaved well for a short board. In Jameos it was very choppy and a lot of current so decided to give it a miss until I am more used to the board.

The Go Pro is fun so I hope to get some more footage soon.

Have fun on the water.

So I get a chance to try it out late this afternoon.

WOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This is going to rip. I started off in the bay to find the balance and it paddles OK with not too much correction and can catch very small lumps.

Then outside into the chop and a small choppy wave. Its partly under water but seams to cope better in the chop than a bigger board. One thing for sure I am not going to be standing so much waiting for waves.

I have only been out of the water for about an hour on the computer but my legs have seized up already, I have not been on a board since before Christmas.

Also the first go with the Go Pro. Here is the result.

Finished at last.

Now I just have to put the pads on and scotch bright the board. Which will be done tomorrow now.

Then I can get it on the water.

Hi All.

Well it has been a long time coming but life is getting exited.

The board will be finished on Sunday but here are a few pics from today.

I have not had the time to involved with the glassing stage but went over today to see the final preparations for painting.

I am impressed at the weight I think it will come in at under 9 kg.

I also got my Go Pro.

I look forward to Sunday.

Sessions / Re: Photos from a surfer.

Hi Sam.

No it's the old Bonga perkins. I sold it just before Christmas and we have only just got the resin to finish the new board. Last week we put on the deck sandwich and we will be glassing it next week after Oly has done a bit of tidying up as the sandwich did not go on so well. To many curves on the rails.

Byron.

I have not had a board since my last post on the helicopter posts so no progress and my new one will take a bit of getting used to as its small. For sure it will spin faster so maybe it will be easier.

I hope to get my Go Pro on Friday so we must set up mounts on all of our boards and join the team.

Have fun on the water and hope to be back with you guys soon.

Russell.
