wow, those are some crazy shots!!  I guess the oc-1 paddler wanted to check the reef for some pearls while he was out there.  lucky thing the surfer and paddler didn't get cracked by the oc-1.  by the looks of picture #4, the surfer must've got some donuts from that wave too.

Mana Karma, I know exactly what you're talking about and Bob provided a great insight on the whole ordeal.

I've surfed the point a few times when it's been good on solid swells (early in the AM).  I don't really go to Tourmaline unless I can make it there super early on a bigger swell and when I do, I usually surf north of the "main" peak.  Often times, I'll paddle out to the point to get a few when no one is out there.  I've heard them yelling at me before while I was out there, but it wasn't a big deal and I never had them throw rocks (maybe the morning drunk was still in effect, like Bob said... thank goodness).

I guess we should be surfing just out of rock throwing range from now on  ;D

hopefully I'll see you and Bob out there some time! there's another member on here (chipmonk) who also surfs out at Tourmaline on occasion.

well, if you've seen Tom English in action, either live at Cardiff or through his videos, you'd know that he's a good sup surfer.  I've seen him out at Cardiff on my way home after surfing Boneyards and he rips it out there.  just my $.02...

I tried his 6'10" before at the Shores in some waist-chest high surf not too long after he got it... it's an interesting board that is surprisingly stable for its size.  it's crazy to watch him punch through 4-5' walls of whitewater on that thing!

Has anyone tried the patagonia wool-lined suits?

not personally, but I've heard they are the bomb from a few different people when I was debating on my Matuse.

sorry to be off the actual subject of hotline vs. xcel, but if you're going to spend that much money on a wetsuit, go with a Matuse, you won't be disappointed.

I bought a Hoplite 4/3/2 and was completely blown away.  it's by far the warmest and most comfortable suit I've owned (previously owned Xcel, Rip Curl, Oneill fullsuits).  the material is super soft and very easy to move around in (due to Geoprene running thinner than neoprene).

On the Matusse... I have seen reports that they must be really, really well cared for.

honestly, I don't think it's any more work... rinse after use, air dry in the shade, same as any other wetsuit.  Geoprene doesn't absorb as much water, so drying time is significantly reduced... meaning no putting on a damp wetsuit or wetsuit funk when you're using it every day.

and no, I didn't get paid to say this.  it's just my honest opinion after going through so many wetsuits.  after growing up in the warm waters of Hawai'i, these SoCal water temperatures turned me into a complete wimp   :P  I need the warmest I can get!

Makes you think how it would be without the breakwall.

I don't know how many times I've wondered the same thing... Bayfront could've had some Trestles-like action!

when I think back on all the big swells I saw growing up, I always think about how nuts it would've been surfing on a stand up!  so much potential at so many other spots!!  imagine all the hidden spots you can find paddling along the south/east side  ;)

hopefully it downgrades before it gets closer to Hawai'i.

Honoli'i - hopefully some spots clean up so you can up your sup game with your new Rippahhhhh!!!  ;D  ;D
