Fish Tales, Stand Up style / SUP fishing on the Adriatic?
« on: May 08, 2016, 01:39:39 AM »
My husband and I are moving to Croatia where we will have two inflatable touring boards waiting for us, and he just announced a desire to take up SUP fishing on the Adriatic. Naturally, I encourage this.

But where to begin? Assuming he can borrow fishing-related gear what is the minimum he needs to get his SUP ready for a fishing excursion?

I'm wondering if there's a SUP Fishing primer in the vein of Rob Casey's book and whether anyone on this board his had experience fishing on the Dalmatian Coast (on a SUP or not)?

I couldn't help but share this Reddit post from someone who had zero passion about SUP before ordering boards through Alibaba: https://www.reddit.com/r/Entrepreneur/comments/2wxteh/designed_imported_and_successfully_sold_a_product/

(The thread really irked me.)

At least the Kickstarter folks actually seem to *like* the sport :-}

Gear Talk / Re: Advice: best locking straps for two boards in bags?
« on: September 01, 2014, 07:33:10 AM »
Thanks for the feedback, all. Of course I saw the 2012 thread right after posting and looked up the Lowe's locks but would almost rather pay extra for coating.

Question about Kanulocks: does anyone know if is the strap as awkward to tighten as the Thule?

Another question: are there better rack pads than the Thule Aero? I'm not sure I like those, either.

Gear Talk / Advice: best locking straps for two boards in bags?
« on: August 30, 2014, 06:45:38 PM »
Hello Zoners,

I'm hoping to get advice from ya'll for my post-SUP Taxi board transport and looking for a solution for locking our boards to the CRV.

The SUP Taxi was a challenge and I sold it. I broke out the 13' Thule locking straps this week and after the second use they are destined to be returned back to REI (what a PITA to use!). That leaves Kanulock and Yakima locking straps to try.

Any preferences or other options? I have regular straps, too.

Thanks!

My hubby and I are headed to Puerto Vallarta to watch (most of) World Cup and are looking for recommendations for SUP rentals. We'll be staying on Los Muertos beach close to the pier and may or may not bring at least one inflatable board. Any advice?

Travel, Trips, Destinations / Re: Russian River SUP
« on: September 15, 2013, 05:02:40 PM »
Apparently there's a board shuttle service in Forestville (I think). A couple of friends have taken that trip and have really enjoyed it.

I've done the Great Russian River Race in May for 3 years on a SUP—there is an outfitter in Healdsburg that may still shuttle folks to Rio Vista and then you ride the 5 miles down to Memorial Beach. When not getting slammed in the head by a two-man canoe on a .5 class rapid it's typically a lovely paddle. However you may want to rent a board from REI in Santa Rosa since the outfitter in Healdsburg had plastic SUP/Kayak hybrid tanks. If you're driving through San Rafael or Petaluma I recommend checking out 101 Surf Sports, Clavey, or Petaluma SUP for rentals.

One caution: make sure the water quality is clean—my neice's boyfriend picked up a very nasty bacteria in the Russian River.

Have fun—it should be hot up there!

Travel, Trips, Destinations / Weekly board rentals in Keauhou/ Kona?
« on: September 15, 2013, 09:47:31 AM »
Hi, we'll be in Kona soon and staying in Keauhou. Usually we rent from Ian at HYPR Nalu but are looking for boards closer to us. We'd also love to pay less than $250 per board per week and bringing our own boards is not an option.

Any recommendations? Thanks!

Gear Talk / Fin recommendations, please!
« on: August 30, 2013, 03:34:17 PM »
Our specs...

Primarily flatwater on SF Bay and local lakes with some encounters with boat wakes and nasty wind. Our nascent quiver consists of a 12'6" 404 (the less fragile version) and a 14' X-fit. We're looking for a little speed and stability.

FCS? Larry Allison? SUP Gladiator? Other brands?

Thanks!

Follow up: Got the FCS. The board is significantly easier to load into this bag compared to the Jimmy Lewis and the bag is easier to zip once the board is in (the zipper on the JL is easier to use).

@Mitch - I looked at the other bags y'all have and decided this one was the better of the 3. BTW: LOVE the WaSUPBUUDY beverage holder --one just needs to place it strategically to avoid hitting it with a paddle.

Thanks to all for advice. Much appreciated!

Next topic: fins!

The Mermen's "Amazing California Health and Happiness Road"! "Unto the Resplendent" is a constant ear worm on my flat water journeys and can go from meditative to epic in the span of a few minutes. (Bassist Allan Whitman is known to tour with Joe Satriani.) And somehow the Perth-based POND has become my go-to for my Lake Tahoe playlists--not surf but fantastic interpretations of psychedelic.

I have a feeling my hubby will agree to the bag advertised by Ms. Appleby.

Thanks again, folks!

@Fog/Mitch - I did write to Tammy to see if she can order the Jimmy Lewis and might ask her about the ProLite as well. I'll check out the Tahoe bag at the shop -- they look wide to me. (And yes, it's likely I bought the very board you raced.)

@joemosq and @ SUP-position - have you used the split bag before? I ask because I can't imagine myself gracefully placing two halves on the board, lol.

@SUP-positon - thanks for the advice on placing the nose at the front--in the event of two boards would you stack them both with the nose in the front?

@TN_SUP It's a hard decision for me -- on one hand it's so much easier for me to remove my 12.6 from a SUP Taxi on a CRV with another person due to the handles on both ends of the bag -- on the other it is a PITA to put the board in the bag as you mentioned.

@SUPlime: I'm not familiar with Midnight Vitamin Blue so I'll check it out!

Gear Talk / 14' board bag recommendations?
« on: August 12, 2013, 09:30:39 PM »
Aloha zoners,

Any recommendations on a board bag for 14' Pau Hana CrossFit? We have a Jimmy Lewis bag for our 12'6", which is a bit more fragile, and are wondering if the Victory KoreDry Topless board bag is a good option?

Recommendations and/or opinions on bag options welcome.

Thanks!
