SUP General / Re: Best Way to Ship a Paddle?
« on: May 22, 2012, 10:21:36 AM »
I take an ordinary cardboard box (type sold by Lowes for moving) and cut open. Laying the cardboard on the garage floor, it's about 7 or 8 feet long.

I wrap the paddle this cardboard. Rolling it up around the paddle.  It's a little bit of a challenge to roll the cardboard, but it can be done.

I have a FedEx account. Nothing more than giving them your credit card to keep on file and you have an account. The FedEx air account can be used for ground shipping too. Now you can print your own FedEx GROUND shipping labels and drop off at the FedEx counter.

I've shipped probably 6 paddles this way. I've never been charged for "oversize" dimensional weight. The paddles ship way cheaper than the $35 KeNalu charges. I avoid UPS and USPS. FedEx Ground is the deal.

Thanks, I might just try that. I saw on the Ke Nalu box that it measures 83x8x5 and figured the 82" Spanker could just squeeze in there but it's just a little too long. I think an 80" paddle MIGHT fit (though the blade wouldn't be padded all that well) and a 78" or shorter paddle would be no problem.

My local Fedex location is pretty strict on shipping items (they once made me re-pack a set of bike wheels because they didn't like the outside appearance of the box), but I suppose I could try the "print the label and quickly ditch it with the clerk" approach and see if it makes it through.

SUP General / Best Way to Ship a Paddle?
« on: May 21, 2012, 06:15:02 PM »
So I am looking to ship a paddle from SoCal to Oregon and inputting weight and dimensions into USPS, UPS and Fedex for shipping quotes and getting really high rates... What is everyone using to ship their paddles and what are you paying?

I would be shipping an 82" Werner Spanker one piece paddle in the box my Ke Nalu paddle came in, so nothing out of the ordinary here.

Events / ARGH - Kalama Klinik in SoCal
« on: April 04, 2012, 06:37:13 PM »
Looks like Dave is going to have a clinic in Newport Beach April 28, 2012 - see details here: https://www.quickbladepaddles.com/kalama_klinik/.

Why the ARGH? Because I've already committed to ride the 78.3 mile L'Etape du California, which features over 11K feet of climbing and a finish at the Mt. Baldy ski resort - http://www.letapeducalifornia.com/.

Passing this along to you lucky SoCal bastards who are free that day. I guess I am back to hoping that Dave will be in Maui when I am there on vacation in September.

SUP General / Re: Joe Bark's Contact Number
« on: December 12, 2011, 03:28:55 PM »
Joe will probably give you his cell phone # when you talk to him (that's how I would chat with him when we were designing my board), but since it's usually best not to give out someone else's cell phone # without their permission, I PM'd you the number of his shop. If you get the VM, the greeting is for Charlie's Ding Repairs, but don't fret, Charlie is Joe's business partner and rest assured, that number rings at the shop in Torrance.

Gear Talk / Re: GoPro Question

Remember kids, the higher frame rates let you do better slo-mo, if you want to, but on the web (and most TV's) you never see those extra pixels from the 1080. Know before you go. ;)

Agreed on slo-mo.  For fast moving activities where you will want to slo-mo, 720P definitely the way to go.  A lot of the "HD" programming we see on TV is 720 rather than 1080, and yes it looks really good.  As slow as I paddle SUP, I don't really need the ability to slow the footage down in slo-mo.   :P

But just want to make sure I am not missing anything here - when you say you won't miss additional pixels @ 1080 on "most TV's," are you assuming that most people's TV's are not 1080P sets or is there something else to the statement?  Because if your TV's are all 1080P sets, particularly if they are large sets (my living room set is 70" and Sharp just announced 80" sets), then I think you WILL notice the extra pixels.

Nice scoop here.  Couldn't find anything about the new camera last night, but then this morning got the email from GoPro.

Still a few details to be filled in, but for me, the two biggest potential improvement are:

  • 170 vs 127 degree FOV in 1080P.  I tend to use my GoPro at 720P to take advantage of the wider 170 degree POV vs the 127 degree POV.  It would be nice to get the same 170 degree POV filiming at 1080P.  For me, there would really be no reason to film at 720P anymore, particularly since I am already using 32GB SD cards (the new ad copy notes that one of the new features of the Hero2 is 32GB SD card support, but the existing Hero already does this).
  • "New Easy to Use LCD Interface." The existing interface is pretty bad, unless you play with the settings on your camera A LOT and have them memorized, you need to dig out the manual to change anything.  The old interface really is archaic, maybe one step up from a DOS prompt.  It's hard to tell from the picture on the site, but if they managed to make the interface useable without having to dig out the manual to interpret weird LCD symbols/codes, that would be great.

Unclear whether these will work with the 3D kit (I would guess yes) or whether they can be mixed/matched with an original Hero in the 3D kit, but in either case I think I just found something to add to the Christmas list.

I've been experimenting with mounts and such, but haven't made any decent videos yet...but just found out the gopro 2 is coming out tomorrow. WiFi capable and an 11mp camera.

Where did you hear this?

Three thoughts:

  • Are you going to post pictures of the 3 handle options?  I think I have seen them in posts here, but don't see them on the site.
  • What is the difference between the various shaft types (100%, 90% and 60% carbon)?
  • Since I don't see a shaft length option, are you shipping one length shaft and then the customer cuts it to suit?  If so, what length shaft is that?  Do you plan on offering customers pre-cut and glued paddles in the future or does that screw up shipping in a smaller box?
Understand the site is still a work in progress but looking good so far and the paddles of course look amazing.

Got back to Hood River and weighed the production paddle on my accurate scale. I was hoping it would be as light as the prototype--519 grams. It's lighter--494 grams.  Yahoo!! 17.4 ounces.

What paddle length at 494g?

Random / Re: How do you embed video on the forum?
« on: October 05, 2011, 11:46:44 AM »
I was poking around some threads trying to figure it out late Monday night PT (right before the site went down - mine was the second to last post before that happened) and saw that some videos were embedded, while some were URL links (including some embedded and some non-embedded in the same thread) and figured there must be some trick to it.

At any rate, thanks for all the hard work Admin.  I must admit, when the site was down yesterday, I had severe withdrawal symptoms.  It wasn't pretty.

Random / How do you embed video on the forum?
« on: October 05, 2011, 10:06:23 AM »
How do you embed videos in posts so that they don't show up simply as URL links?  I did a search of the forum, couldn't find any guidance, same with the FAQ, and I don't see any icons in the "Start New Topic" menu that look like they will do the trick (the way the [img] tags work).  I have also tried the embed codes provided by YouTube and they didn't work for me either.

It seems like the cool kids know the secret of how to embed their videos... I would like to be like the cool kids.

The video and the paddle look great.  I may just have to try one out even though I am a diehard bent shaft guy.  Speaking of which, any plans to offer a bent shaft in the foreseeable future?

Hull speed for a 12'6' board is 4.74 kts. For a 14' its 5.01 and for a 19' it's 5.84.

Where did you get these numbers and what board design are they based on?  For instance, all things being equal, a imagine a 14' board that is 25" wide would have a greater hull speed than one 29" wide.  And that a displacement hull would typically have a greater hull speed than a planing surboard design (at least in flatwater).

Gear Talk / Re: Hydration? Back vs Hip?
« on: September 19, 2011, 11:18:16 AM »
Curve Waterman was my choice.  As noted above, one of the advantages of a backpack hydration pack is that it doesn't conflict with a belt-mounted PFD (which the USCG requires us to wear outside the surf zone).  I don't feel it gets in the way of paddling at all... in fact, it was designed for prone surfers, so it's very robust and secure.
