I appreciate all the replies. I will be getting the RS Pro product. Thanks to all that helped here.

great info. Thanks. The RSPro is speced at 380mirons which is 15mil thick. That is more of a sheet material than tape. I will probably end up getting it. I have two boards on Punta Mita now, one brand new Starboard and my Stoke XL. I want to protect both of them.

Gear Talk / Rail wear options
« on: December 18, 2022, 03:53:53 PM »
I am getting some wear on my rails from the paddle.  I have been looking into various options. I did some searching and found rail tapes like RSPro and "paddle guard" products.

Seems like the paddle guard type products go around the outer edge of the actual paddle blade. That is not what is causing the wear I am getting. My rail wear is coming from the socket where the shaft attaches to the paddle. There is a slight ridge on the socket and I am pretty sure it is the ridge that is causing the wear. I plan to sand that ridge smooth but I was wondering if anyone makes something like a Teflon sleeve to go over the socket. I could design my own but am open to buying an existing product.

The RSPro tape seems popular but $55 for 12 feet of tape seems like a lot. The specs say it is PVC tape. Anyone try generic PVC tape from an industrial supply?

Gear Talk / Re: Tape on paddle handle (t-top) to improve grip.
« on: December 18, 2022, 03:28:26 PM »
I have  carbon fiber paddles and was having trouble with my (gloved) hands slipping on the shaft when I went to pull into a wave. Coming from an ice hockey background in an earlier life, I thought I would try using hockey-stick tape. Generically, I think it is just "friction tape". Not sure of the best brand. This has worked out really well. I keep paddles in Santa Cruz California and in Punta Mita MX. I just got back from Punta Mita and re-taped my paddle last after a couple years of use on and off. The tape was just looking a little faded. The new tape-job was a little too sticky for the first couple of sessions but that stickiness wears off and you end up with a nice situation with zero-slip.

Note that this is for the shaft and not the very top (T-handle) which the OP may be actually asking about. On one of my paddles, I covered the T-handle with Plasti-Dip. I used bright red but it comes in other colors.

General Discussion / propulsion module
« on: July 30, 2021, 08:08:38 PM »
My condo in Punta Mita is about 1.5 miles from two of the best surf spots. I can paddle to them but if the wind comes up in the wrong direction it can be a problem getting back. Some of the other surfers down here have small inflatable boats with 5HP gas motors that they use to get to the breaks and back. Those things look to cost about $7000 and have their own issues. I don't really need a boat if I can find some sort of a propulsion module that can get me to the breaks, leave on the shore while I surf, and then use it again to return home.

I did some searching and there are products on the market. I just have not found the one that is jumping out at me. Seems like most of them  mount to the fin box (that means changing fins at the breaks). I saw one (scubajet) that can be hand held but I would have to be laying down to hold it under the board.

So I am asking, is anyone else using propulsion in a temporary manner just to get to the surf break.? What products are you using?

Thanks

We can also probably arrange a "try before you buy"

well sadly I don't have the exact dimensions. Seems that they didn't pencil them in on the bottom as is often done. I just tried to get the width and thickness. It appears to be 30" wide and 3.75" thick.

Best thing would be to come by and take look at it.

This is a custom built SUP direct from the Infinity Surf Shop in Dana Point. It was shaped by Steve Boehne. This board makes a great first SUP for either surfing or flat water paddling. I mostly used it for surfing and have since moved to a smaller,  higher performance board. It has great stability and will catch the smallest waves but will also handle bigger surf if the drop is not too steep or you drop at an angle. It is in perfect condition. Comes complete with the tri-fins shown in the photos. The board is located in area code 94588, Pleasanton CA. Please buy this board. I need room in my garage. PM for contact info and to make arrangements to check this board out.

just my 2 cents but we are about the same size. Really the best thing would be to try some different boards by renting or borrowing to see what you like. I have a 156 liter board that i love. it is 10'2" and 30" wide. I have a 140 liter board that is 9'6". It is much harder to stand on but it surfs great if you don't fall off in the process of turning to catch a wave. I recently bought a 165 liter 9'6" x32. It is super easy to stand on and also surfs great. It really all depends on  what you like and how you use it. If you you are ok with something harder to stand on because you want performance then you can go smaller. But that isn't me. So I say look for something no smaller than 150 liters, at least 30" wide and somewhere between 9'6" and 10'. The dimensions are useful numbers but the shape is also important. That is why it is best to try some boards before you buy.

Gear Talk / Re: small crack repair on a Starboard brushed carbon
« on: April 30, 2018, 04:28:02 PM »
If it is just a crack, it can be hard to seal. No enough area. So if it were me, I would grind along the crack to make a V-shaped trench and then fill that with with the "stuff" of your choice. DingAll Suncure Epoxy is  a good choice for small jobs. No mixing needed.

Covering with a small piece of fiberglass would be the ultimate fix.

Between my boards and my RC planes I tend to do a fair amount of fixing work. More so for my planes than my boards but the tech is similar for both. I always keep good quality surfboard epoxy around. There are lots of good ones but I use Resin Research (mostly kwik kick because even that isn't very fast)
http://www.theshapingshack.com/3-pint-resin-research-kwick-kick-epoxy-kit/
It is thin and clear and can be used for everything from glassing to patching. For patching or filling, you just mix it Cabosil or micro balloons or other various fairing fillers. If you have a Tap Plastics nearby, you can get the fillers there.

Gear Talk / Re: Best Sander for Ding Repair
« on: April 30, 2018, 04:13:30 PM »
I have made some boards from scratch and had to do some fixing but I only have occasional need for the tools of the trade. I have both polishes and sanders. I think the big, disk sanders and just too hard to handle unless you use them every day and need the speed and power. On the other hand the big, disk, sanders worked great when I need to actually polish a complete epoxy glass board.

For fixing dings and most general sanding I have not found anything that beats a variable speed 5" random orbit sander. I happen to have a Dewalt but no doubt the Bosch is also great. They are the right combination of  weight, power, and controlability. I also bought some 2" air sanders but sanders need a huge amount of air. I have a small Makita compressor and it is really just not big enough for any real sanding jobs. Air sanders can also be too powerful and do too much damage too quickly.

Another very cool sander is the micro sander from MicroMark
https://www.micromark.com/Micro-Sander

It is too small for most surfboard-scale jobs but I also build and fly RC gliders and it is perfect for repairs on those things.

Gear Talk / Re: Water shoes or reef booties with thicker soles
« on: April 30, 2018, 12:59:48 PM »
Buy them tight because they do stretch a little. The first pair I had, KSO's, I bought a 43, after a month and some water, I wish I bought 42's. Ever since then, I buy 42's. Tight in the beginning and then perfect.

So I took a WAG at the correct size and ordered size 44 (10.5 to 11) They mostly fit great but press on my #3 and #4 toes. Did you find that the toe pockets stretch? I'd rather not have to go generally bigger just to accommodate my toes if that part will stretch.

Gear Talk / Water shoes or reef booties with thicker soles
« on: April 25, 2018, 02:20:26 PM »
I am looking for footwear suggestions. This will be for warm water, SUP surfing. I have regular, low profile reef booties. The problem with them is that the bottoms are too thin for actually walking on rocks or coral. I mean, they are better than nothing but I am looking for a brand and model that has a more substantial bottom than typical reef booties.
