Random / Re: Should we really wait for "them" to figure this out?
« on: April 30, 2020, 05:29:37 PM »
The fact is, until there is a cure and a vaccine, we can't return to doing things as we did before.

there really is no cure or vaccine for the common flu. there are treatments which turn out to be about 30-60% effective. and yet we've gone on wonderfully without shutting everything down. so that statement is ridiculous. but a lot of folks buy into it.

A lot of you claim to be conservatives, and yet based on past posts from most of you, i'd swear you're all die-hard liberals here. which is why i don't post very often...when an opposing opinion comes along, you guys act like you've just been faced with Hannibal Lecter. living with as much intolerance as you guys have must be painful.

So I have no interest in any of this here, but clearly i've got a little too much time on my hands so I'll leave with this:
everything was shut down because we were worried about overburdening our healthcare system and hospitals. and yet now, when neither of those things are happening, we remain shut down. please don't say as soon as we reopen, the hospitals will be full. you don't know that at all, but if it works out that way, then our 'waiting to flatten the curve' meant nothing, and we're just as unprepared as ever.  so waiting longer will also be fruitless. everything should reopen immediately, and keep a close eye on hospitalizations. if they creep up uncomfortably, then some rescinding may be in order. if not, who cares if people are not social distancing? not social distancing is a potential cause of problems, not a benchmark of problems.

MAGA! (yeah, i threw that in there just knowing how much you libbies, oh sorry, conservatives, hate that).

Classifieds / Smik Hipster Twin 8'0" in Jupiter, FL
« on: November 24, 2019, 09:24:51 AM »
Scotty from Australia delivered this to me in Palm Beach a couple of years back. It turned out to be a bit too small for me and ended up using it about 5 times. No damage, really good shape as most marks on it are just from being in my garage. 8'0"*30.5 118L. Bought new at $1600, sell at $600. Too big to ship so pretty much local only. thanks.

had the same procedure done about 4 years ago. went pretty well but that first month is a bit of a drag...hard to sleep sitting up, constant icing, and stuff like that. but it goes by relatively fast. the physical therapy afterwards isn't too bad either. did that for 2 months. after 3 months was back SUP surfing and kiting. SUP surfing still annoys my shoulder, but at least i can move it above my waist now. don't expect your shoulder to ever feel 100%, it won't. much weaker overall (relative to when i was healthy), but most days i don't even remember it was done. i still do shoulder stretching/exercises daily. just get used to setting off metal detectors at airports. good luck!

Despite having a lot of Gong gear I have no affiliation with them either. :)

so given you do have a lot of Gong gear, seems you're the guy to ask these questions, albeit off topic: do the Gong foils have tuttle only, or is there a mast plate available? Their prices seem crazy low relative to others. For example, to get an Armstrong 2400 full foil would be about $2200, Gong seems to have similar for about $800. how is it possible? (i know all carbon vs. some aluminum, but still...). Is it not much problem getting this stuff from France? Quality still good? I need a really big foil wing, that's why i'm asking, thx.

clay, as i'm your size, curious as to what size is your board and foil wing? i've only been out once on my 5m wing with a 1600 sq cm foil wing and 6'2" board and wasn't close to getting up on foil...downwind or otherwise. but winds were < 15 mph.

He is a fascist. Trump has malignant narcissistic personality disorder. What is now normal is literally insane. And still, you will find people...even on this forum, that supports him.

you have no idea what a fascist is. if you did, you'd know Obama was much more deserving of the term than Trump.

Pono,  i think you misinterpreted me. all my engineering friend drives is electric vehicles and has for years. he loves them. what he meant was you don't buy an electric vehicle for savings, you buy them because once you do, you never want to drive ICE's again.

my 2013 Ridgeline cost about $30G. yeah, it won't tow 11G, but then again, i don't tow anything and think most that own pickups don't either. i'm not saying the Rivian isn't a cool truck...i think it's awesome. But if you tend to take very longs trips (like i do a few times a year), the Rivian won't cut it. And if you want that 400 mile capability, you'll pay a lot more than 62K.  And regards the cost savings, as an engineer friend of mine told me: you don't buy an electric vehicle because it's overall cheaper (because it isn't), you buy it because it's electric.

regards the Rivian, it must be nice to pay $70G for a base model truck without blinking an eye.

yeah, i need new wheels but have been waiting for something hybrid/electric in the cargo van style. the VW Buzz looks awesome, but VW's have such a bad rep in general. That Mercedes looks like another bland minivan. Is it really that hard to deliver a good looking van? (apparently so). And it seems there would be a market for utility vehicles like this that don't require heavy hauling/towing capacities, thereby delivering much better energy efficiency, be it fuel or battery.

and beached, what would be really meanigful would be to share details re the starby youve married, along with some specs on you (ht wt ability etc)

i purposely didn't mention it, and after i posted, i kind of wished i didn't even mention Starboard. My point was more against a commonly heard phrase about going custom versus big production. for me, i've had better luck with big production boards than custom. i don't think this thread was meant to be the 10 millionth 'which board is the best?' thread.

I weigh 185lbs too and downsized from the 7'4x30x105L Hypernut to the production 6'x28x115L Kalama and love it!

can you stand/balance comfortably on that Kalama at your weight without being up on the foil? i'm just about 20 lbs heavier, and am wondering about my lower limit.

i've bought my share of boards over the years, and have had the best luck with Starboard. I've done custom, but  it doesn't necessarily mean well built, or more proper for me. i still have a garage of boards i'll likely never step on again, and cannot even sell them. i've given away several for free. i used to think there was always something better out there, even if i was quite happy with what i currently had. now, i'm content and only read about new boards to stay aware/current. my last Starboard lasted 5 years, with much abuse, and i just went out and got the same one (later model, of course, but a design and construction i'm totally satisfied with).

but once up on the foil, does it really matter that you have 142L under you? i'm just wondering about the stability of this board while NOT up on the foil. at 6'2"*28"*5", it might be like trying to balance on a log. but very interesting nonetheless and want to know more.

No way a 205lb beginner on a 125l board!  Blue Planet Surf has a nice video on YOUTube about volume & skill level.

my current smallest non-foil SUP is 8'0" Smik with 118L, which is a bit challenging but doable, so 125L seems very doable. But obviously it's not just about volume. I'd like to go as short as possible, but in that 120L+ range.  But a 6-ish foot board versus an 8 foot board will have front-to-back stability issues (while not up foiling). encouraging that ninja tuna found 6'5" no problem.
